Power and Conflict in a Castilian Atlantic Manor. The Lawsuit of the County of El Puerto de Santa María at the Beginning of the Modern Age

En este trabajo pretendemos analizar las causas y el desarrollo del conflicto y pleito iniciado en el siglo XVI entre el duque de Medinaceli y los vecinos su villa de El Puerto de Santa María, un importante enclave comercial de la Andalucía Atlántica, que acabará en la firma de una concordia en 1628. Para ello, analizaremos previamente los procesos que llevaron a la conformación de las rentas señoriales, para posteriormente estudiar los diferentes elementos que constituían el motivo de conflicto: el control del poder concejil, la posesión de la tierra y la imposición de derechos y gravámenes, analizando los argumentos utilizados por ambas partes para defender su posición.In this work we pretend to analyze the causes and the development of the conflict initiated in the 16th century between the Duke of Medinaceli and the neighbors of his town of El Puerto de Santa Maria, an important commercial place of Atlantic Andalusia, that will end in 1628 by the signing of a concord. For this, we analyze at first the processes that led to the formation of the nobility taxes, and after we study the different elements that constituted the cause of conflict: the control of council power, the possession of the land and the imposition of duties and taxes, analyzing the arguments used by the lord and the neighbors to defend their position

La búsqueda del ingreso: comercio, industria e inversiones financieras de la Casa de los Adelantados de Andalucía (siglos XV-XVI)

The Enríquez de Ribera family was one of the main lineages in the late middle and early modern ages in Seville that managed to build up an outstanding estate made up of villas located on the border with Granada. The adelantados (military governors in a frontier territory) were systematically incorporating land, real estate, and income with the aim of increasing their extensive wealth and diversifying their sources of income, beyond the income received in their jurisdictional lordships or the grants they received for the exercise of the office of the adelantados. Since the end of the fifteenth century, they financed and managed industrial and commercial activities such as the manufacture and export of soap or sugar cane. The most important project they carried out was the construction of the «Hospital de las Cinco Llagas», for whose financing they provided numerous properties and tributes acquired in Seville, turning the hospital into a financial instrument of the lineage and one of the great owners of the property market in Seville.La casa de los Enríquez de Ribera fue uno de los principales linajes en la Sevilla medieval y moderna, consolidando un destacado patrimonio formado por villas situadas en la frontera de Granada. Los adelantados fueron incorporando de manera sistemática tierras, bienes, y rentas con el objetivo de aumentar el extenso patrimonio y diversificar sus fuentes de ingresos, más allá de las rentas percibidas en sus señoríos jurisdiccionales o de las mercedes que recibían por el ejercicio del oficio del adelantamiento. Desde finales del siglo XV financiaron y gestionaron actividades industriales y comerciales como la fabricación y exportación de jabón o de caña de azúcar. La obra más importante que llevaron a cabo fue la construcción del Hospital de las Cinco Llagas, para cuya financiación dotaron de numerosas propiedades y tributos adquiridos en Sevilla, convirtiendo al hospital en un instrumento financiero del linaje y uno de los grandes propietarios del mercado de inmuebles hispalense

El objeto de este trabajo es el estudio de la fiscalidad señorial de la villa de Bornos a inicios del siglo XVI. Por esta razón, analizaremos las distintas rentas que percibía el señor, las características de las mismas, así como los métodos de recaudación y gestión de su hacienda en la villa de Bornos. Del mismo modo, centraremos nuestra atención en los conflictos que entre la villa y su señor se producirán en torno a una serie de derechos y tributos exigidos por el señor.The object of this work is the study of the lordly tax system in the town of Bornos at the beginning of the 16th century. For this reason, we are going to analyze the different taxes that were collected by the lord in his town, the characteristics of such taxes, as well as the mechanisms of collection and management of his taxes and property.
