Commentary: Actions to end violence against women : a multi-sector approach
Many forms of violence affect women and girls, such as physical and sexual abuse, trafficking, female genital mutilation, early and forced marriage, murders in the name of honour or dowry, and sexual harassment and abuse by authority figures. Prevention is imperative, and promising programmes exist that need to be tested and scaled up. The UN’s post-2015 global agenda, currently under discussion, must include a target to eliminate violence against women and girls, which supports the actions outlined in this article
Non uniform rotating vortices and periodic orbits for the two-dimensional Euler Equations
This paper concerns the study of some special ordered structures in turbulent
flows. In particular, a systematic and relevant methodology is proposed to
construct non trivial and non radial rotating vortices with non necessarily
uniform densities and with different --fold symmetries, . In
particular, a complete study is provided for the truncated quadratic density
, with the unit disc. We
exhibit different behaviors with respect to the coefficients and
describing the rarefaction of bifurcating curves.Comment: 115 pages, 1 figur
Inclusive Development in Latin America and Smallholders’ Interactive Learning Spaces
Inclusive development appears as a challenge in Latin America countries after the rupture of the social inclusion as a trickle-down effect of the economic growth. Searching development with inclusion several public policies were implemented in Latin American focusing in the agri-food production. In order to assess the progress to reach such objectives, two cases are studied. Smallholder milk producers at the Loma Blanca community (Mexico) and smallholders olive producers at Aimogasta (Argentina) were considered. Interactive learning spaces were clearly identified as consequence of the linking between product, producers and territory. Despite these results, several queries are still opened.Fil: Bastida Mercado, Claudia. Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México; MéxicoFil: GarcÃa MartÃnez, Anastacio. Randall-Sundrum brane cosmology: modification of late-time cosmic dynamics by exotic matter
In this paper we show, through the study of concrete examples, that,
depending on the cosmic dynamics of the energy density of matter degrees of
freedom living in the brane, Randall-Sundrum (RS) brane effects can be
important not only at short distances (UV regime), but also at large
cosmological scales (IR regime). Our first example relies on the study, by
means of the dynamical systems tools, of a toy model based in a non-linear
electrodynamics (NLED) Lagrangian. Then we show that other, less elaborated
models, such as the inclusion of a scalar phantom field, and of a tachyon
phantom field -- trapped in the brane -- produce similar results. The form of
the RS correction seems to convert what would have been future attractors in
general relativity into saddle points. The above "mixing of scales" effect is
distinctive only of theories that modify the right-hand-side (matter part) of
the Friedmann equation, so that, for instance, DGP-brane models do not show
this feature.Comment: Latex, 12 pages, 9 eps figures. Title changed, discussion improved.

Biosensing for the analysis of raw milk
Appropriate methods for monitoring raw milk in food sectors are required in order to prevent health-related issues from consuming milk or fermented dairy products such as cheese and yogurt. Conventional systems used for this purpose require sophisticated instruments, highly technical staff and several days to yield an estimated contaminant concentration profile. Currently, there is no technology available for fast and sensitive identification of unwanted substances that evidences several concentration levels in raw milk. As a contribution to the progress of innovative biochemical sensing systems, this thesis presents the design, development and construction of a prototype, which combines the expertise of sensitive immunoassay process with micro total analysis system (µTAS) to identify specific compounds encountered in raw milk. Since the concept of µTAS appeared, the development of microfluidic devices and their application have increased enormously. Microfluidic devices offer a highly efficient platform for analysis of biomolecules due to the capacity for manipulating small amounts of liquid quickly and with high precision. Particle size estimation, particle separation, cell collection, manipulation and cell detection are some of many functions which could be performed through microfluidic systems. Based on these advantages, microfluidic devices in combination with an associated immunoassay system were used in the prototype to concentrate contamination patterns or specific compounds encountered in raw milk. The NANODETECT prototype developed in this thesis should provide an economic, efficient and sensitive platform for multicomponent detection of specific substances in raw milk without requiring sophisticated instruments and trained staff. This thesis was performed for the European project NANODETECT (Development of nanosensors for the detection of quality parameters along the food chain) funded by European Commission within the 7th framework program
Alginate electrodeposition onto three-dimensional porous Co-Ni films as drug delivery platforms
Three-dimensional porous Co–Ni films/alginate hybrid materials have been successfully prepared by electrodeposition to be used as a steerable magnetic device for drug delivery. Firstly, 3D porous Co–Ni films were prepared as substrates for the subsequent electrodeposition of the alginate biopolymer. Cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic and potentiostatic studies were performed to establish the best conditions to obtain porous Co–Ni films. The electrochemical experiments were carried out in an electrolyte containing the metal salts and ammonium chloride at low pHs. In a second stage, the electrochemical deposition of alginate as a biocompatible polymer drug delivery carrier was performed. The characteristics of the alginate matrix were investigated in terms of electrochemical properties, morphology and drug release. The hybrid material obtained showed soft-magnetic behavior and drug release indicating its suitability to be used as a steerable magnetic drug delivery device.Postprint (author's final draft
