Models of relativistic particle with curvature and torsion revisited
Models, describing relativistic particles, where Lagrangian densities depend
linearly on both the curvature and the torsion of the trajectories, are
revisited in D=3 space forms. The moduli spaces of trajectories are completely
and explicitly determined using the Lancret program. The moduli subspaces of
closed solitons in the three sphere are also determined.Comment: 13 page
Tesi
Binormal Motion of Curves with Constant Torsion in 3-Spaces
We study curve motion by the binormal flow with curvature and torsion depending velocity and sweeping out immersed surfaces. Using the Gauss-Codazzi equations, we obtain filaments evolving with constant torsion which arise from extremal curves of curvature energy functionals. They are "soliton" solutions in the sense that they evolve without changing shape. This research was supported by MINECO-FEDER Grant MTM2014-54804-P, Gobierno Vasco Grant IT1094-16, and UPV/EHU GIU13/08, Spain.

B-Function Expression in the Flower Center Underlies the Homeotic Phenotype of Lacandonia schismatica (Triuridaceae)
Spontaneous homeotic transformations have been described in natural populations of both plants and animals, but little is known about the molecular-genetic mechanisms underlying these processes in plants. In the ABC model of floral organ identity in Arabidopsis thaliana, the B- and C-functions are necessary for stamen morphogenesis, and C alone is required for carpel identity. We provide ABC model-based molecular-genetic evidence that explains the unique inside-out homeotic floral organ arrangement of the monocotyledonous mycoheterotroph species Lacandonia schismatica (Triuridaceae) from Mexico. Whereas a quarter million flowering plant species bear central carpels surrounded by stamens, L. schismatica stamens occur in the center of the flower and are surrounded by carpels. The simplest explanation for this is that the B-function is displaced toward the flower center. Our analyses of the spatio-temporal pattern of B- and C-function gene expression are consistent with this hypothesis. The hypothesis is further supported by conservation between the B-function genes of L. schismatica and Arabidopsis, as the former are able to rescue stamens in Arabidopsis transgenic complementation lines, and Ls-AP3 and Ls-PI are able to interact with each other and with the corresponding Arabidopsis B-function proteins in yeast. Thus, relatively simple molecular modifications may underlie important morphological shifts in natural populations of extant plant taxa

“Plug and play” modular façade construction system for building renovation to achieve nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB)
Following energy performance improvement policies, there is a need for the massive renovation of the European building stock. The prevalence of multi-rise buildings with concrete structure and poor thermal performance offers a significant opportunity for renovation packages that facilitate the improvement of the building fabric, with its insulation, air-tightness and integration of building services and solar technologies. The RenoZEB project develops a "plug and play" modular facade construction system answering to this need. This prefabricated plug and play modular system has been tested by reproducing the holistic methodology and new technologies in the market by means of real and virtual demonstrators. The applicability and effectiveness of the methodology has been tested by means of a full-scale mock-up system has been constructed and installed in the KUBIK by Tecnalia test facility. The design, construction, manufacture & installation cycle has been tested. Its applicability for a real construction project for a multi-rise residential building in Spain is presented. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 768718
Biomolecule surface patterning may enhance membrane association
Under dehydration conditions, amphipathic Late Embryogenesis Abundant (LEA)
proteins fold spontaneously from a random conformation into alpha-helical
structures and this transition is promoted by the presence of membranes. To
gain insight into the thermodynamics of membrane association we model the
resulting alpha-helical structures as infinite rigid cylinders patterned with
hydrophobic and hydrophilic stripes oriented parallel to their axis.
Statistical thermodynamic calculations using Single Chain Mean Field (SCMF)
theory show that the relative thickness of the stripes controls the free energy
of interaction of the alpha-helices with a phospholipid bilayer, as does the
bilayer structure and the depth of the equilibrium penetration of the cylinders
into the bilayer. The results may suggest the optimal thickness of the stripes
to mimic the association of such protein with membranes.Comment: Published in ACS Nano http://pubs.acs.org/doi/pdf/10.1021/nn204736
