Comparing characteristics of homicides in Finland, the Netherlands and Sweden.

    Get PDF
There are many challenges when conducting European cross-national research on homicide. In particular, European cross-national knowledge on lethal violence has been hampered for a long time because European countries tend to differ in the data sources they used and in their definitions of homicide. To stimulate cross-national research efforts in Europe, this chapter compares the characteristics of homicides in Finland, the Netherlands and Sweden. More specifically, in a three-year research project, financed by the European Union, Finland, the Netherlands and Sweden joined forces to build a first joint database on homicide in Europe, referred to as the European Homicide Monitor, EHM. This Monitor exclusively contains data from the three countries on 1,577 homicide cases, involving 1,666 victims and 1,917 offenders. On the basis of these data, first findings indicate evidence of cross-national differences between Finnish, Dutch and Swedish homicides, and especially in (a) the average homicide rate, (b) location of homicides, (c) offenders’ modus operandi, (d) the average age of homicide victims and offenders, and (e) the birth country of offenders and victims. Although this chapter shows that building a joint European Monitor is feasible, it also indicates that several methodological issues still exist when conducting cross-national research on homicide.N/

Growth and yield attributes of wheat crop in response to application of micronutrients: A review

    Get PDF
Wheat is one of the most important cereal crop and staple foods in the world. Increase in productivity of wheat by balance nutrient management is one of the most crucial factors. The main objective this study is to assessing the role of micronutrients in improving different components of wheat yield. There are different methods of application such as seed priming, soil application and fortification but foliar application is more beneficial. This is due to response of foliar application has positive and quadrate in nature i.e. the optimum dose of foliar application of zinc for grain yield of wheat was observed as 0.04%. Among treatments of micronutrient alone or combined forms give better results over control. Results have show that micronutrient application substantially improved leaf area index (LAI), leaf area duration, CGR (Crop growth rate), RGR (Relative growth rate), NAR (Net assimilation rate), plant height, spike length, spikelets/spike, grains/spike, test weight, tillers m-2, grain yield, chlorophyll content and biological yield as well as harvest index of wheat. The yield and quality of wheat products improved and boosted by micronutrient applications. Therefore, human and animal health will be protected with the feed of enriched and balanced nutrition of produce as well as it will help in facing the severe global food security

The various results obtained here for each of these subclasses included coefficient estimate, distortion theorem, radius of starlikeness, convexity and closure theorem. Keywords & Phrases: - Multivalent function, coefficient estimate, distortion theorem, radius of starlikeness, differential operator

Quantitative Estimation of Mangroves and Their Associates’ Marshy Lands at Palghar District in Maharashtra

    Get PDF
Mangroves are the shrubs or trees growing in coastal saline or brackish water. The ecological study has practical applications in conservation biology, wetland management, natural resource management, city planning community health economic, basic & applied science & human social interaction. Mangrove ecosystems are highly productive but extremely sensitive and fragile. The present study deals with quantitative estimation, density, abundance and diversity index of mangroves located in western coastal region of Maharashtra, the Palghar district which is also a part of Konkan tract or Konkan coast. In the study area of Palghar coastline, out of 16 recorded species, 13 species are true mangrove from 4 genera & 8 families are observed. The flora from family Acanthaceae, Primulaceae, Fabaceae, Convolvulaceae, Combretaceae, Rhizophoraceae, Salvadoraceae, Aizoaceae, Lythraceae, Amaranthaceae are recorded as mangroves and their associates at 5 marshy locations of Palghar coastlines. Due to anthropogenic activity, industrialization & tourisms, sewage water and non-degradable wastes like plastic wrappers, plastic bottles get deposited in the marshy areas which is the reason why the mangrove are degraded. The covered upline areas with plastic suffocate the roots, even the pneumatophores and plants die due to suffocation. Until the adaptation for the plastic-coated marshy lands has not been developed in mangrove plants

Dead or alive? De invloed van incidentkenmerken en gedragingen van actoren op fatale versus niet-fatale uitkomsten van geweld

    Get PDF
Modified whale’s tail technique using amnion membrane for periodontal regeneration in the anterior teeth with diastema: A case report

    Get PDF
The biggest challenge during periodontal regeneration in the anterior region lies in the maintenance of esthetics. Whale’s tail technique has a novel flap design that achieves both these goals while maintaining the functional integrity of the periodontal tissues. A 46-yearold male reported with the chief complaint of bleeding from the gums. Periodontal examination of 11 shows probing pocket depth of 7 mm mesially with clinical attachment loss of 8 mm. Whale’s tail technique using demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft (DFDBA) and Amnion membrane was used in this case to achieve 4mm gain in clinical attachment level at the end of 11 months. This technique successfully demonstrates stable clinical outcomes in terms of management of anterior periodontal regeneration in diastema cases. Long term clinical trials are required to validate these results

    Somatization and health seeking behavior

    Get PDF
Background:Somatization is the state of being symptomatic which is not explained medically associated with psychological distress and health-seeking behavior and is present in at least 10% to 15% in OPD.Methods:50 patients with long standing history of MUS were evaluated by using modified Bradford inventory. Results: Somatization was most common in younger age, female and lower socio-economical class. Feeling of weakness or lack of energy much of the time in both male and female respectively 94.7% and 96.7% are the most common symptomatic presentation in Somatization during last 2 years, although there were symptomatic differences in males and females. Severity of symptoms was higher among females. 13% of female pts had undergone hysterectomy due to persistent gynecological problems during course of illness. 82% pts had illness of more than 2 years. The mean duration of illness at the time of assessment was 6.8 years. Most of the patients had visited to multiple consultants and underwent many costly diagnostic procedures for their symptoms .Most of the patients after multiple investigations and consultations were not ready to accept psychological origin of their physical illness and continued to see next practitioner as they remained dissatisfied and distressed. One or more physical illness is the common explanation by physicians. Patients presented with somatization has an another diagnosis in significant cases like Major depressive disorder, anxiety disorder, alcohol use disorder. Conclusion:Somatization was common among female, but it was not uncommon in male. Patient suffering from somatization disorder has very high rate of health care utilization and they perceived themselves as severely ill and were willing to undergo multiple hospitalizations, diagnostic studies, and operations, remained dissatisfied. Need to strengthened consultation liaison between physician and psychiatrist.

    Get PDF
The economies of most countries in the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) are dependent on farming, most of which is done mainly by small farmers in mixed cropping systems. The government is also the main provider of extension services. This study sought to assess farmers’ satisfaction with the extensions services and identify areas for improvement. Some 462 farmers in five OECS countries were selected and surveyed in 2013. A farmers’ satisfaction index was developed based on 26 statements in a Likert-type scale and used as the dependent variable. Data were analyzed using STATA 9 and descriptive frequencies and multiple linear regression results were presented. Results showed that farmers’ overall satisfaction with extension was moderate. Farmers’ age, gender, education level, size of farm, number of parcels farmed, number of extension visits received, and whether farmers operated on a full time or part time basis significantly influenced farmers’ level of satisfaction. Recommendations included: the redefinition of target farmers, as well as the scope of extension programs for intervention to meet these states ‘food security goals; the improvement of the technical capacities of extension officers; the expansion of group development work; and the increased use of ICTs for information dissemination and the provision of ICT hardware for extension staf
