    Student Voice: Perceptions of Teacher Expectations Among First and Second Generation Vietnamese and Mexican Students

    This qualitative research study explored the perceptions first and second generation Vietnamese and Mexican high school students hold on teacher expectations based on their racial identity. Specifically, this study explores the critical concepts of stereotype threat, halo effect, and self-fulfilling prophecy. The primary purpose of this investigation was to enhance the understanding of how the perception students have impacts success or lack of success for two different student groups. This study utilizes interviews with student focus groups to examine student perceptions of teacher expectations among Vietnamese and Mexican students and its impact on student academic performance, the general nature of the perceptions among students, whether or not students of the two races have different perceptions, and what students perceive to be the major implications for teachers based on these perceptions. Results revealed that participants perceived significant differences on what teachers expected of them. In addition, this research also found significant differences on how students perceived they were treated depending on their race. Therefore, the findings highlight the importance strong relationships play in order to enhance student performance as well as how important it is for educators to constantly be cognizant of their non-verbal communication. Furthermore, the results also point out the importance of developing one’s own racial consciousness in order to eliminate implicit biases and stereotypes that cause people to have conscious or unconscious behaviors that can be harmful to students. These behaviors cause students to give up and drop out of school which in turn widens the academic achievement gap. The results highlight important implications for education in general.     A Descriptive Multicultural Phenomenology for Culturally Responsive Leadership

    As public schools in the United States continue to diversify in culture, educational leaders committed to multicultural education seek qualitative research methodologies for understanding phenomena in order to build culturally responsive leadership initiatives and interventions. This paper argues that a phenomenological research methodology is appropriate and relevant to understand cultural phenomena in the 21st century school. To serve this, the authors elaborate on a descriptive multicultural phenomenological research methodology for educational leaders. A phenomenological framework positions educational leaders to understand the nature and essence of personal experience. This approach will help educational leaders better understand the experiences of the diverse children within their school. Therefore, leaders may utilize a multicultural phenomenological research methodology to build appropriate culturally responsive initiatives and interventions to meet the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse schools

    La investigación responde a una necesidad de los jóvenes hipertensos de 19 a 25 años ubicados en la comunidad perteneciente al Consejo Popular Carlos Manuel del municipio Pinar del Río. Se parte de un diagnóstico inicial utilizando diferentes métodos de investigación para la constatación de la existencia real del problema en el enfrentamiento a la Hipertensión Arterial, dentro de los cuales se destacan los teóricos y empíricos, los métodos estadísticos y los de intervención comunitaria, se realizaron consultas a especialistas para recoger la información necesaria para la aprobación de la propuesta que permita influir positivamente en reducir el efecto de la Hipertensión Arterial en estos jóvenes, como vía para el fortalecimiento de su estado de salud y elevar su calidad de vida, a partir de un conjunto de actividades físicas y acciones educativas propuestas, los beneficios del ejercicio físico han sido ampliamente demostrados, se produce una serie de adaptaciones fisiológicas y sicológicas que tienen como consecuencia un incremento de su capacidad funcional y aumenta la autoconfianza, las acciones educativas están dirigidas a transformar su modo de actuación como grupo en la comunidad. El conjunto de ejercicios propuesto es integrador y parte de las necesidades psicobiológicas de los jóvenes hipertensos conociendo las características de la edad para la cual está dirigida, se destacan los ejercicios aeróbicos, fortalecedores sin implementos y con implementos, respiratorios y de relajación muscular. La propuesta tuvo una gran aceptación en la comunidad del Consejo Popular Carlos Manuel del municipio Pinar del Río y los resultados superan considerablemente los objetivos propuestos en la investigació

    Teoría poscolonial y encare decolonial: hurgando en sus genealogías

    Las investigaciones actuales, lejos de los enfoques hegemónicos o más extendidos, no coinciden en señalar el papel perjudicial de la imposición del colonialismo occidental y del orden social capitalista para las sociedades periféricas. En base a una revisión de la literatura, se identifica una escasez de estudios sobre la genealogía del discurso descolonizador. Así pues, el documento analiza la teoría poscolonial, sus primeros estudios, la construcción de conceptos y el desarrollo de la teoría en el ámbito académico, especialmente en los países de habla hispana. La perspectiva decolonial en la teoría postcolonial tiene un punto de partida común en las genealogías de la teoría postcolonial analizada. Sin embargo, varias diferencias prevalecen en las reflexiones de la teoría poscolonial. Se concluye que la investigación de la genealogía de la teoría postcolonial es una tarea necesaria no sólo para reflexionar sobre la epistemología de los estudios, sino también para tensar los aspectos históricos, ontológicos y gnoseológicos presentes en los textos. TEORIA PÓS-COLONIAL E FACE DECOLONIAL: MERGULHANDO EM SUAS GENEALOGIAS As pesquisas atuais, distantes dos enfoques hegemônicos ou mais difundidos, não coincidem em assinalar o papel nefasto da imposição do colonialismo ocidental e ordem social capitalista para as sociedades periféricas. Com base numa revisão de literatura, identifica-se uma escassez de estudos sobre genealogia do discurso descolonizador. Desse modo, o artigo analisa a teoria pós-colonial, seus primeiros estudos, a construção de conceitos e desenvolvimento da teoria na academia, em especial, nos países de língua espanhola. A perspectiva decolonial na teoria pós-colonial possui um ponto de partida comum nas genealogias da teoria pós-colonial analisada. Porém, prevalece diversas diferenças nas reflexões da teoria pós-colonial. Conclui-se que investigar a genealogia da teoria pós-colonial é uma tarefa necessária não somente para refletir sobre a epistemologia dos estudos, senão também para tensionar os aspectos históricos, ontológicos e gnosiológicos presentes nos textos. POSTCOLONIAL THEORY AND DECOLONIAL FACE: DELVING INTO THEIR GENEALOGIES Current researches, far from hegemonic or more widespread approaches, do not coincide in pointing out the harmful role of the imposition of Western colonialism and capitalist social order for peripheral societies. Based on a literature review, a scarcity of studies on the genealogy of decolonizing discourse is identified. Thus, this article analyzes the postcolonial theory, its early studies, the construction of concepts and the development of theory in academia, especially in Spanish speaking countries. The decolonial perspective in postcolonial theory has a common starting point in the genealogies of the analyzed postcolonial theory. However, several differences prevail in the reflections of postcolonial theory. It is concluded that investigating the genealogy of postcolonial theory is a necessary task not only to reflect on the epistemology of studies, but also to tension the historical, ontological and gnoseological aspects present in the texts
