    Exploring the Self-Referent Meaning Mechanisms of Terror Management Theory and Socioemotional Selectivity Theory

    Two theories of mortality threat management propose distinct psychological mechanisms to cope with mortality concerns. Terror management theory suggests death prompts existential concern whereas socioemotional selectivity theory suggests a limited lifetime prompts hedonic concerns. Both reminders of the finality of life threaten self-existence, yet only terror management theory research has investigated the capacity for art to reaffirm self-referent meaning compromised by death awareness. In two studies, we explored the potential existential nature within death and limited-lifetime awareness and then examined self-referent meaning reaffirmation through naturalistic and surrealistic art in response to death awareness and limited-lifetime awareness. We found that limited-lifetime awareness does not induce existential concern as in death awareness, but naturalistic art, surrealistic art, and the control condition were evaluated similarly in terms of self-referent meaning across the death awareness, limited-lifetime awareness, and control conditions. These results suggest that although separate mechanisms emerge to cope with death versus limited-lifetime awareness, motivated self-reference is not elicited differently from naturalistic and surrealistic art following mortality awareness of death or a limited lifetime

    A General Mathematical Formulation for the Determination of Differential Leakage Factors in Electrical Machines with Symmetrical and Asymmetrical Full or Dead-Coil Multiphase Windings

    This paper presents a simple and general mathematical formulation for the determination of the differential leakage factor for both symmetrical and asymmetrical full and dead-coil windings of electrical machines. The method can be applied to all multiphase windings and considers Görges polygons in conjunction with masses geometry in order to find an easy and affordable way to compute the differential leakage factor, avoiding the adoption of traditional methods that refer to the Ossanna's infinite series, which has to be obviously truncated under the bound of a predetermined accuracy. Moreover, the method described in this paper allows the easy determination of both the minimum and maximum values of the differential leakage factor, as well as its average value and the time trend. The proposed method, which does not require infinite series, is validated by means of several examples in order to practically demonstrate the effectiveness and the easiness of application of this procedure

    Site effects at the Campi Flegrei,preliminary results

    The Campi Flegrei caldera is a complex structure with a high population density, located west of the city of Naples. In addition of being an active volcano it is characterized by a high seismic hazard due to both Appennines regional earthquakes and to local earthquakes occurring during the bradyseismic crises. These unrest phenomena are characterized by slow ground vertical movements, particularly active in the central part of the caldera, and by a high number of low-magnitude earthquakes. In this context, the determination of the site transfer functions of the area has a strong relevance for the Civil Defense aimed to determine the hazard of the area. We have calculated the site transfer function with different techniques (H/V and Generalized Inversion technique) and have collected data on the local geology with the aim of correlating the site transfer functions with lithology and topography. This analysis has been performed on three areas: the Astroni crater, the Camaldoli hill and the Agnano plain. A future development will be to extend this analysis to the whole Campi Flegrei area

    Janus kinase (JAK) 2 V617F mutation as the cause of primary thrombocythemia in acromegaly with severe visceromegaly and divergence between growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor-1 concentrations during the follow-up: causal or casual association?

    OBJECTIVE: An increased prevalence of hematological abnormalities is reported in acromegaly, but to date no reports about the presence of the Janus Kinase (JAK) 2 mutation in acromegalic patients have been described. DESIGN: We report the complex clinical presentation of the unique case, never described, of acromegaly due to GH-secreting pituitary adenoma associated with JAK2 V617F mutation. RESULTS: The patient shows primary thrombocythemia and myelofibrosis, due to JAK2 V617F mutation, severe visceromegaly and a peculiar clinical course of the disease characterized by discrepant values of GH and IGF-1 during somatostatin analog (SA) treatment despite a significant reduction in pituitary adenoma size and therapeutic resistance both to SA and pegvisomant. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of JAK2 V617F mutation is a cause of primary thrombocythemia and myelofibrosis in acromegaly. In this patient, a peculiar clinical course of acromegaly was observed, with the difficulty in controlling the disease.     Metabolic parameters and adipokine profile during GH replacement therapy in children with GH deficiency

    Objective: GH replacement therapy in children with GH deficiency (GHD) mainly promotes linear growth. Not only have very few studies fully analyzed the metabolic consequences of GH therapy, but also the question as to whether GH may affect adipokine secretion has been insufficiently investigated. Our aim was to study the effects of GH replacement therapy on auxological data, lipid and glycemic profiles, insulin homeostasis (HOMA-IR) and serum adipokines in children. Methods: This was a 1-year prospective study. Thirty-four GHD children (11.6G2.6 years) and thirty healthy matched controls were enrolled. Children affected by GHD were studied both before beginning continuous GH replacement therapy and again at 12 months. Results: At the beginning of the study, total and LDL cholesterol were higher in GHD children than in controls (P!0.001), whereas HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, insulin, HOMA-IR, leptin, and adiponectin were similar. At 12 months of continuous GH replacement therapy in the GHD group, there was a significant increase in both auxological data and IGF-I (P!0.001); total cholesterol (P!0.001), LDL (P!0.001), triglycerides (P!0.005), and leptin (P!0.001) decreased significantly; HDL (P!0.003), insulin (P!0.001), HOMA-IR (P!0.001) increased while adiponectin was unmodified. Furthermore, IGF-ID showed an inverse correlation with leptin D (rZK0.398, PZ0.02). Conclusions: In GHD children, the evaluation of metabolic parameters proves to be a useful tool for the evaluation of auxological parameters during GH replacement therapy. In our study, GH replacement therapy in GHD children improved final height, restored IGF-I levels, reduced leptin levels, and improved the lipid profile, without producing any unfavorable effects on glucose metabolism

    Development of a rapid and eco-friendly UHPLC analytical method for the detection of histamine in fish products

    We developed, validated, and confirmed with proficiency tests a fast ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detector (UHPLC-DAD) method to determine histamine in fish and fishery products. The proposed method consists of two successive solid–liquid extractions: one with a dilute solution of perchloric acid (6%) and the second only with water. The instrumental analysis with UHPLC provides a very fast run time (only 6 min) with a retention time of approximately 4 min, a limit of quantification (LOQ) of 7.2 mg kg−1, a limit of detection (LOD) of 2.2 mg kg−1, a recovery around 100%, a relative standard deviation (RSD%) between 0.5 and 1.4, and an r2 of calibration curve equal to 0.9995. The method detected optimal values of the validation parameters and required a limited number of reagents in comparison to other methods reported in the literature. Furthermore, the method could detect histamine in a very short time compared with other methods. This method, in addition to being validated, precise, specific, and accurate, avoids wasting time, money, and resources, and limits the use of organic solvents
