Regional Productivity Differentials in Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic

This paper starts by describing the distribution of GVA, employment and productivity growth across the regions of Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic. Next, we investigate in what extent regional per capita income gaps to the European average can be attributed to differences in productivity per worker. Finally, we extend Esteban’s (2000) shift-share analysis to measure how regional productivity gaps are due to differences in industrial mix as opposed to region-specific factors. The results point out the greater influence of the second element and therefore support policies benefiting homogenously all the sectors in the least developed regions.Eastern Europe, Poland, Aggregate Productivity, Shift-share, Regional Policy

La efervescencia del momento puede estar formando mucha espuma diluyendo así la sustancia concentrada de lo que es la esencia del principio de igualdad por razón de sexo, por lo cual es imposible renunciar a la visión crítica de los cambios lingüísticos, de su significado y cómo éstos son aplicados. El interés por este tema surge personalmente por agradecimiento a todas las madres que entregan su vida a los hijos, desde las llamadas “amas de casa” a tiempo completo –como mi propia madre– hasta las mujeres que trabajan dos jornadas, una en su empleo formal y la otra en casa. La inquietud general por asuntos relacionados con la mujer surge tras haber participado en dos ocasiones desde la sociedad civil en el evento mundial anual más concurrido y significativo sobre la mujer, el encuentro de la “Comisión de la Condición Jurídica y Social de la Mujer” –CSW57 en 2013 y CSW59-Beijing+20 en 2015– que se celebra cada mes de marzo en la sede de Naciones Unidas en Nueva York

The Lived Experience of Latina Women Giving Birth in the United States

As the Latino community continues to grow in the United States, it is essential that cultural considerations be addressed, particularly in health care. Cultural assessment is of the utmost importance when trying to understand the phenomena of childbirth. Childbirth is one of the most significant events in a woman\u27s life. It is complicated when giving birth in a country other than one\u27s own. Therefore, it is crucial to comprehend and appreciate how culture influences the birth experience. Nurses play an essential role in assisting women of diverse cultures to fulfill their expectations regarding traditions, beliefs, and practices regarding childbirth. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the meaning of the lived experience of childbirth of Latina women giving birth in the United States. The inclusion criteria consisted of Latina women vaginally delivering their first child. A purposive sample of 12 participants was selected until the point of redundancy. Participants were approached within 48 hours after delivery. Interviews were audio taped-recorded and then transcribed. Observational notes and demographic data were recorded. Each mother was asked to verbally respond to the following statement/questions: (a) Tell me about your recent childbirth experience, (b) What did the childbirth experience mean to you? (c) What did it mean to you giving birth in the United States? Further probing questions emerged as the interviews progressed. van Marten\u27s phenomenonological method was used as the framework for data analysis. Transcripts were coded and reviewed for themes and patterns. All interviews were conducted in Spanish and analyzed in both Spanish and English. In addition, findings were validated across respondents through member validation conducted at the end of the data collection phase. Analysis resulted in three essential themes, Cultural Adaptation, The Unfamiliar Journey in a Foreign Land, and Confirmation of Choice. Significant to the essential themes are the seven incidental themes of Cultural Differences, La Familia (Support based on culture), Spirituality, Emotions of Labor, Timeliness of Labor, The Ultimate Reward, and Realization of Motherhood. The meaning of the Latina woman\u27s experience of giving birth in the United States involved the dimensions of adapting to the North American culture and living through the process of labor, which culminated with the affirmation of her choice of giving birth in the United States

Diabetic retinopathy: could the alpha-1 antitrypsin be a therapeutic option?

Diabetic retinopathy is one of the most important causes of blindness. The underlying mechanisms of this disease include inflammatory changes and remodeling processes of the extracellular-matrix (ECM) leading to pericyte and vascular endothelial cell damage that affects the retinal circulation. In turn, this causes hypoxia leading to release of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) to induce the angiogenesis process. Alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) is the most important circulating inhibitor of serine proteases (SERPIN). Its targets include elastase, plasmin, thrombin, trypsin, chymotrypsin, proteinase 3 (PR-3) and plasminogen activator (PAI). AAT modulates the effect of protease-activated receptors (PARs) during inflammatory responses. Plasma levels of AAT can increase 4-fold during acute inflammation then is so-called acute phase protein (APPs). Individuals with low serum levels of AAT could develop disease in lung, liver and pancreas. AAT is involved in extracellular matrix remodeling and inflammation, particularly migration and chemotaxis of neutrophils. It can also suppress nitric oxide (NO) by nitric oxide sintase (NOS) inhibition. AAT binds their targets in an irreversible way resulting in product degradation. The aim of this review is to focus on the points of contact between multiple factors involved in diabetic retinopathy and AAT resembling pleiotropic effects that might be beneficial.Fil: Ortiz, Gustavo Alfredo. On Some Generalizations Bellman-Bihari Result for Integro-Functional Inequalities for Discontinuous Functions and Their Applications

We present some new nonlinear integral inequalities Bellman-Bihari type with delay for discontinuous functions (integro-sum inequalities; impulse integral inequalities). Some applications of the results are included: conditions of boundedness (uniformly), stability by Lyapunov (uniformly), practical stability by Chetaev (uniformly) for the solutions of impulsive differential and integro-differential systems of ordinary differential equations
