The Evolution of Luminous Compact Blue Galaxies: Disks or Spheroids?
Luminous compact blue galaxies (LCBGs) are a diverse class of galaxies
characterized by high luminosities, blue colors, and high surface brightnesses.
Residing at the high luminosity, high mass end of the blue sequence, LCBGs sit
at the critical juncture of galaxies that are evolving from the blue to the red
sequence. Yet we do not understand what drives the evolution of LCBGs, nor how
they will evolve. Based on single-dish HI observations, we know that they have
a diverse range of properties. LCBGs are HI-rich with M(HI)=10^{9-10.5} M(sun),
have moderate M(dyn)=10^{10-12} M(sun), and 80% have gas depletion timescales
less than 3 Gyr. These properties are consistent with LCBGs evolving into
low-mass spirals or high mass dwarf ellipticals or dwarf irregulars. However,
LCBGs do not follow the Tully-Fisher relation, nor can most evolve onto it,
implying that many LCBGs are not smoothly rotating, virialized systems. GMRT
and VLA HI maps confirm this conclusion revealing signatures of recent
interactions and dynamically hot components in some local LCBGs, consistent
with the formation of a thick disk or spheroid. Such signatures and the high
incidence of close companions around LCBGs suggest that star formation in local
LCBGs is likely triggered by interactions. The dynamical masses and apparent
spheroid formation in LCBGs combined with previous results from optical
spectroscopy are consistent with virial heating being the primary mechanism for
quenching star formation in these galaxies.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, to appear in "Hunting for the Dark: The Hidden

Uniportal pure robotic-assisted thoracic surgery—technical aspects, tips and tricks
The uniportal access for robotic thoracic surgery presents itself as a natural evolution of minimally invasive thoracic surgery (MITS). It was developed by surgeons who pioneered the uniportal video-assisted thoracic surgery (U-VATS) in all its aspects following the same principles of a single incision by using robotic technology. The robotic surgery was initially started as a hybrid procedure with the use of thoracoscopic staplers by the assistant. However, due to the evolution of robotic modern platforms, the staplers can be nowadays controlled by the main surgeon from the console. The pure uniportal robotic-assisted thoracic surgery (U-RATS) is defined as the robotic thoracic surgery performed through a single intercostal (ic) incision, without rib spreading, using the robotic camera, robotic dissecting instruments and robotic staplers. There are presented the advantages, difficulties, the general aspects and specific considerations for U-RATS. For safety reasons, the authors recommend the transition from multiportal-RATS through biportal-RATS to U-RATS. The use of robotic dissection and staplers through a single incision and the rapid undocking with easy emergent conversion when needed (either to U-VATS or to thoracotomy) are safety advantages over multi-port RATS that cannot be overlooked, offering great comfort to the surgeon and quick and smooth recovery to the patient.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
How B-DNA dynamics decipher sequence-selective protein recognition
The rules governing sequence-specific DNA-protein recognition are under a long-standing debate regarding the prevalence of base versus shape readout mechanisms to explain sequence specificity and of the conformational selection versus induced fit binding paradigms to explain binding-related conformational changes in DNA. Using a combination of atomistic simulations on a subset of representative sequences and mesoscopic simulations at the protein-DNA interactome level, we demonstrate the prevalence of the shape readout model in determining sequence-specificity and of the conformational selection paradigm in defining the general mechanism for binding-related conformational changes in DNA. Our results suggest that the DNA uses a double mechanism to adapt its structure to the protein: it moves along the easiest deformation modes to approach the bioactive conformation, while final adjustments require localized rearrangements at the base-pair step and backbone level. Our study highlights the large impact of B-DNA dynamics in modulating DNA-protein binding
