    Increased prevalence of abnormal vertebral patterning in fetuses and neonates with trisomy 21

    Purpose: To assess the prevalence of an abnormal number of ribs in a cohort of fetuses and neonates with trisomy 21 and compare this with a subgroup of fetuses without anomalies. Materials and methods: Radiographs of 67 deceased fetuses, neonates, and infants that were diagnosed with trisomy 21 were reviewed. Terminations of pregnancy were included. The control group was composed of 107 deceased fetuses, neonates, and infants without known chromosomal abnormalities, structural malformations, infections or placental pathology. Cases in which the number of thoracic ribs or presence of cervical ribs could not be reliably assessed were excluded. The literature concerning vertebral patterning in trisomy 21 cases and healthy subjects was reviewed. Results: Absent or rudimentary 12th thoracic ribs were found in 26/54 (48.1%) cases with trisomy 21 and cervical ribs were present in 27/47 (57.4%) cases. This prevalence was significantly higher compared to controls (28/100, 28.0%, Χ2(1) = 6.252, p = .012 and 28/97, 28.9%, Χ2(1) = 10.955, p < .001, respectively). Conclusions: Rudimentary or absent 12th thoracic ribs and cervical ribs are significantly more prevalent in deceased fetuses and infants with trisomy 21

    An Open Unified Addressing System for 6G Communication Networks

    With the rapid and continuous development of the Internet, it is foreseeable that current addressing schemes and fixed-length IP addresses would create further bottlenecks and limitations in realizing future 6G networking requirements, such as massive connections, resource-constrained communication, and heterogeneous hyper interconnections and guaranteeing agreement-based services and KPIs. Moreover, the locator-based addressing semantic is unsuitable for mobile and content-oriented networks. Thus, this paper proposes the Open Unified Addressing (OUA) system, a novel, flexible, multi-semantic and hierarchical addressing architecture that better supports the flexibility and extensibility of the Internet protocol framework in the context of 6G Communications. The OUA addresses several limitations in the current IP protocol and improves communication efficiency. According to the evaluation with two typical forwarding models, the results show that the OUA system has almost no impact on forwarding delay. Moreover, it can provide scalable addressing spaces and shorten the route convergence time

    Enabling multicast slices in edge networks

    Telecommunication networks are undergoing a disruptive transition towards distributed mobile edge networks with virtualized network functions (VNFs) (e.g., firewalls, Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs), and transcoders) within the proximity of users. This transition will enable network services, especially IoT applications, to be provisioned as network slices with sequences of VNFs, in order to guarantee the performance and security of their continuous data and control flows. In this paper we study the problems of delay-aware network slicing for multicasting traffic of IoT applications in edge networks. We first propose exact solutions by formulating the problems into Integer Linear Programs (ILPs). We further devise an approximation algorithm with an approximation ratio for the problem of delay-aware network slicing for a single multicast slice, with the objective to minimize the implementation cost of the network slice subject to its delay requirement constraint. Given multiple multicast slicing requests, we also propose an efficient heuristic that admits as many user requests as possible, through exploring the impact of a non-trivial interplay of the total computing resource demand and delay requirements. We then investigate the problem of delay-oriented network slicing with given levels of delay guarantees, considering that different types of IoT applications have different levels of delay requirements, for which we propose an efficient heuristic based on Reinforcement Learning (RL). We finally evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms through both simulations and implementations in a real test-bed.     ABSTRACT Communication environments are becoming increasingly more complex due to the diversity of available network technologies in terms of spatial coverage and design characteristics, and the proliferation of multi-function devices. In order to take full advantage of such technology capital, there is a growing need to reduce complexity for both end-users and network operators delivering services over these ubiquitous communication environments. Recent research efforts have moved in the direction of creating solutions that facilitate self-properties (i.e. selfconfiguring, -adaptation -management, -optimisation, -organisation) in future networks. An important enabler underpinning such solutions is the availability of a reliable and up-to-date knowledge base to simplify and foster autonomic decision-making. We introduce the Ambient Networks Information Service Infrastructure (ANISI), which aims at gathering and correlating information from different layers of the protocol stack and across different domains. We show how ANISI supports both enhanced mobility management and context-aware communications in pervasive networking environments

    Analysis of end-to-end multi-domain management and orchestration frameworks for software defined infrastructures: an architectural survey

    Over the last couple of years, industry operators&#39; associations issued requirements towards an end-to-end management and orchestration plane for 5G networks. Consequently, standard organisations started their activities in this domain. This article provides an analysis and an architectural survey of these initiatives and of the main requirements, proposes descriptions for the key concepts of domain, resource and service slicing, end-to-end orchestration and a reference architecture for the end-to-end orchestration plane. Then, a set of currently available or under development domain orchestration frameworks are mapped to this reference architecture. These frameworks, meant to provide coordination and automated management of cloud and networking resources, network functions and services, fulfil multi-domain (i.e. multi-technology and multi-operator) orchestration requirements, thus enabling the realisation of an end-to-end orchestration plane.     The Future Internet - Future Internet Assembly 2013: Validated Results and New Horizons

    The Internet is the most vital scientific, technical, economic and societal set of infrastructures in existence and in operation today serving 2.5 billion users. Continuing its developments would secure much of the upcoming innovation and prosperity and it would underpin the sustainable growth in economic values and volumes needed in the future. Future Internet infrastructures research is therefore a must. The Future Internet Assembly (FIA) is a successful conference that brings together participants of over 150 research projects from several distinct yet interrelated areas in the European Union Framework Programme 7 (FP7). The research projects are grouped as follows: the network of the future as infrastructure connecting and orchestrating the future Internet of people, computers, devices, content, clouds and things; cloud computing, Internet of Services and advanced software engineering; the public-private partnership projects on Future Internet; Future Internet Research and Experimentation (FIRE). The 26 full papers included in this volume were selected from 45 submissions. They are organized in topical sections named: software driven networks, virtualization, programmability and autonomic management; computing and networking clouds; internet of things; and enabling technologies and economic incentives
