A multiscale model for the feto-placental circulation in monochorionic twin pregnancies
AbstractWe developed a mathematical model of monochorionic twin pregnancies to simulate both the normal gestation and the Twin-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS), a disease in which the interplacental anastomose create a flow imbalance, causing one of the twin to receive too much blood and liquids, becoming hypertensive and polyhydramnios (the Recipient) and the other to become hypotensive and oligohydramnios (the Donor). This syndrome, if untreated, leads almost certainly to death one or both twins. We propose a compartment model to simulate the flows between the placenta and the fetuses and the accumulation of the amniotic fluid in the sacs. The aim of our work is to provide a simple but realistic model of the twins-mother system and to stress it by simulating the pathological cases and the related treatments, i.e. aminioreduction (elimination of the excess liquid in the recipient sac), laser therapy (removal of all the anastomoses) and other possible innovative therapies impacting on pressure and flow parameters
A rare case of oral multisystem Langerhans cell histiocytosis
Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare disorder characterized by high proliferation of Langerhans dendritic cells. LCH is a solitary or multifocal disease that primarily involves bone tissue and often affects children and young men. A 29 years-old Caucasian man was referred to the Oral Surgery Unit of George Eastman Hospital - Umberto I teaching hospital, with third degree mobility of teeth belonging to second, third and fourth quadrant. Panoramic radiograph showed multiple radiolucent areas with well demarcated borders on the right and left site of the mandible and on the left site of the maxilla. Extractions of compromised teeth and biopsy of the osteolytic tissue were performed. The final diagnosis of multisystem Langerhans cell histiocytosis of the soft and hard tissues of the oral cavity was made. The patient was sent to the Hematology department of Umberto I Teaching Hospital of ?Sapienza? ? University of Rome for the proper treatment. The present case of rare multisystem LCH involving oral hard and soft tissues shows the strong importance of better investigate, with appropriate additional exams, initial shifty symptoms that could lead to a misdiagnosis
Methodological approach to the 3D ultrasound reconstruction of human fetal thymus: a preliminary study.
The aim of this preliminary study is to propose a new methodological approach to the study of thymic morphology and volume in human fetus by ultrasound, using mathematical three-dimensional (3D) models and comparing them to the volumes obtained by Virtual Organ Computer-aided (VOCAL). Thymic volume and morphology of two fetuses at 21 and at 28 weeks of gestational age were reconstructed using VOCAL system and two different 3D models of fetal thymus were created with a CAD 3D software by an addition of geometrical solids: a conical model for the 21 weeks thymus; an elliptical model for the 28 weeks thymus. We believe that dysmorphism, volume and involution of fetal thymus should be investigated by this method during pregnancy. The relationship between the volumes obtained by VOCAL and those obtained with 3D models should be confirmed by further studies
Geochemical Characterization of Spring Waters in the Crati River Basin, Calabria (Southern Italy)
The characterization of the spatial variation of geochemical parameters in spring waters, especially the ones used for drinking purpose, is essential to identify potential risks to humans. In this work, results of a qualitative analysis on 190 samples of spring waters collected in the largest catchment of the Calabria region (southern Italy) are shown. Several physical and chemical parameters were analysed and the Langelier-Ludwig diagram was built to evaluate the hydrochemical facies of the sampled waters. Additionally, the relationships between water temperature and altitude and electric conductivity (EC) and altitude were assessed. Geostatistical methods were used to map the physical and chemical parameters. Results showed a good quality status of the spring waters in the Crati basin, with a predominant Ca-Mg-type hydrochemical facies. Then, a connection between EC and temperature with elevation has been detected in some area of the basin. Finally, the spatial analysis allowed identifying the distribution of the concentration of the several parameters
