    Clinical, histological, immunohistochemical and biomolecular analysis of hyaluronic acid in early wound healing of human gingival tissues: a randomized, split‐mouth trial

    Background: Hyaluronic acid (HA) exerts a fundamental role in tissue repair. In vitro and animal studies demonstrated its ability to enhance wound healing. Nevertheless, in vivo human studies evaluating mechanisms involved in oral soft tissue repair are lacking. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vivo effect of HA on early wound healing of human gingival tissues (G). Methods: In the present randomized, split-mouth, double-blind, clinical trial, G biopsies were obtained in eight patients 24 hours after surgery after HA application (treatment group-HA) and compared with those obtained from the same patients without HA application (no treatment group-NT). Clinical response was evaluated through Early Wound Healing Score (EHS). Microvascular density (MVD), collagen content and cellular proliferation were evaluated through Sirius red, Masson trichrome staining and Ki67 immunohistochemistry, respectively. To assess collagen turnover, MMP-1, MMP-2, MMP-9, TGF-β1 protein levels and LOX, MMP-1, TIMP-1, TGF-β1 gene expression were analysed by Western Blot and Real Time PCR. Results: Twenty-four hours after surgery, EHS was significantly higher in HA group. MVD, collagen content and cell proliferation were not affected. LOX mRNA, MMP-1 protein and TIMP-1 gene expression were significantly up-regulated in HA compared to NT group. Conclusions: The additional use of 0.8% HA gel does not modify the new blood vessels growth in the early phase of gingival wound healing. Concerning the secondary outcomes, HA seems to enhance extracellular matrix remodelling and collagen maturation, that could drive the early wound healing of gingival tissues to improve clinical parameters.     Bispectrum and recurrent neural networks: Improved classification of interictal and preictal states

    This work proposes a novel approach for the classification of interictal and preictal brain states based on bispectrum analysis and recurrent Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural networks. Two features were first extracted from bilateral intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) recordings of dogs with naturally occurring focal epilepsy. Single-layer LSTM networks were trained to classify 5-min long feature vectors as preictal or interictal. Classification performances were compared to previous work involving multilayer perceptron networks and higher-order spectral (HOS) features on the same dataset. The proposed LSTM network proved superior to the multilayer perceptron network and achieved an average classification accuracy of 86.29% on held-out data. Results imply the possibility of forecasting epileptic seizures using recurrent neural networks, with minimal feature extraction

Tra gli obiettivi principali del progetto, lo sviluppo di una complessa e decisa azione di ricerca scientifica volta ad una profonda comprensione dei fenomeni di inquinamento ambientale e dei loro risvolti sull’ecosistema e la salute umana. Le aree di indagine del progetto sono rappresentate dai Siti di Interesse Nazionale di Priolo, Milazzo-Pace del Mela e Crotone che, per specificità e modalità di impatto antropogenico sull’ambiente, l’ecosistema e la salute umana, coprono un ampio spettro di tipologie di interesse

    Le attività di campionamento ed acquisizione dati svolte durante la campagna CISAS_2 si inseriscono in seno al progetto “Centro internazionale di studi avanzati su ambiente ed impatti su ecosistema e salute umana (CISAS)” del CNR. L’obiettivo principale del progetto CISAS è la comprensione dei processi e dei meccanismi di trasferimento di alcuni contaminanti convenzionali (metalli pesanti, POPs, radionuclidi, ecc.) e di alcuni contaminanti emergenti (PDBE, composti farmaceutici di nuova generazione, ecc.) dall’ambiente inteso come l’insieme di atmosfera-suoli-acque sotterranee-matrici marine (acque e sedimento) all’ecosistema e all’uomo. Le aree di indagine del progetto sono i Siti di Interesse Nazionale (SIN) di Priolo, Milazzo-Pace del Mela e Crotone che, per specificità e modalità di impatto antropogenico sull’ambiente, l’ecosistema e la salute umana, coprono un ampio spettro di tipologie di interesse. La campagna oceanografica CISAS_ 2 è stata dedicata alla caratterizzazione ambientale del SIN di Crotone, nonché all’identificazione delle sorgenti dei contaminanti la cui distribuzione si ritiene di interesse (per i valori di concentrazione riscontrati nelle diverse matrici ambientali e per livello di tossicità associata agli effetti degli stessi sulla salute dell’ecosistema e dell’uomo) e i pathways di deposizione nelle aree di interesse

    Consumer e-health education in HIV/AIDS: a pilot study of a web-based video workshop

    BACKGROUND: Members of the HIV/AIDS community are known to use web-based tools to support learning about treatment issues. Initial research indicated components such as message forums or web-based documentation were effectively used by persons with HIV/AIDS. Video has also shown promise as a technology to aid consumer health education. However, no research has been published thus far investigating the impact of web-based environments combining these components in an educational workshop format. METHODS: In this qualitative study HIV/AIDS community members provided feedback on an integrated web-based consumer health education environment. Participants were recruited through organizations that serve the HIV/AIDS community located in Toronto, Canada. Demographics, data on Internet use, including messages exchanged in the study environment were collected. A group interview provided feedback on usability of the study environment, preferences for information formats, use of the message forum, and other sources for learning about treatment information. RESULTS: In this pilot study analysis of the posted messages did not demonstrate use for learning of the workshop content. Participants did not generally find the environment of value for learning about treatment information. However, participants did share how they were meeting these needs. It was indicated that a combination of resources are being used to find and discuss treatment information, including in-person sources. CONCLUSION: More research on the ways in which treatment information needs are being met by HIV/AIDS community members and how technology fits in this process is necessary before investing large amounts of money into web-based interventions. Although this study had a limited number of participants, the findings were unexpected and, therefore, of interest to those who intend to implement online consumer health education initiatives or interventions

    From Data to Software to Science with the Rubin Observatory LSST

    The Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) dataset will dramatically alter our understanding of the Universe, from the origins of the Solar System to the nature of dark matter and dark energy. Much of this research will depend on the existence of robust, tested, and scalable algorithms, software, and services. Identifying and developing such tools ahead of time has the potential to significantly accelerate the delivery of early science from LSST. Developing these collaboratively, and making them broadly available, can enable more inclusive and equitable collaboration on LSST science. To facilitate such opportunities, a community workshop entitled "From Data to Software to Science with the Rubin Observatory LSST" was organized by the LSST Interdisciplinary Network for Collaboration and Computing (LINCC) and partners, and held at the Flatiron Institute in New York, March 28-30th 2022. The workshop included over 50 in-person attendees invited from over 300 applications. It identified seven key software areas of need: (i) scalable cross-matching and distributed joining of catalogs, (ii) robust photometric redshift determination, (iii) software for determination of selection functions, (iv) frameworks for scalable time-series analyses, (v) services for image access and reprocessing at scale, (vi) object image access (cutouts) and analysis at scale, and (vii) scalable job execution systems. This white paper summarizes the discussions of this workshop. It considers the motivating science use cases, identified cross-cutting algorithms, software, and services, their high-level technical specifications, and the principles of inclusive collaborations needed to develop them.
