    Advanced digital SAR processing study

    A highly programmable, land based, real time synthetic aperture radar (SAR) processor requiring a processed pixel rate of 2.75 MHz or more in a four look system was designed. Variations in range and azimuth compression, number of looks, range swath, range migration and SR mode were specified. Alternative range and azimuth processing algorithms were examined in conjunction with projected integrated circuit, digital architecture, and software technologies. The advaced digital SAR processor (ADSP) employs an FFT convolver algorithm for both range and azimuth processing in a parallel architecture configuration. Algorithm performace comparisons, design system design, implementation tradeoffs and the results of a supporting survey of integrated circuit and digital architecture technologies are reported. Cost tradeoffs and projections with alternate implementation plans are presented

    Energy dependence of ratios of multiplicities and their slopes for gluon and quark jets

    The difference between the ratio of multiplicities and the ratio of their derivatives on energy for gluon and quark jets is calculated up to next-to-next-to leading order of perturbative QCD. Its non-zero value is uniquely defined by the running property of the QCD coupling constant. It is shown that this difference is rather small compared to values which can be obtained from experimental data. This disagreement can be ascribed either to strong non-perturbative terms or to experimental problems with a scale choice, jets separation and inadequate assignement of soft particles to jets.Comment: 5 pages, LATEX, no Figs; submitted to JETP Let

    The 1--loop effective Lagrangian for a massive scalar field on an arbitrary causality violating spacetime is calculated using the methods of Euclidean quantum field theory in curved spacetime. Fields of spin 1/2, spin 1 and twisted field configurations are also considered. In general, we find that the Lagrangian diverges to minus infinity at each of the nth polarised hypersurfaces of the spacetime with a structure governed by a DeWitt-Schwinger type expansion.Comment: 17 pages, Late

    International audienceMixing ratios of hydrogen peroxide and hydroxymethyl hydroperoxide were determined aboard the US Department of Energy G-1 Research Aircraft during the March 2006 MILAGRO field campaign in Mexico. Ground measurements of total hydroperoxide were made at the T1 site at Universidad Technologica de Tecámac, about 35 km NW of Mexico City. In the air and on the ground, peroxide mixing ratios near the source region were generally near 1 ppbv, much lower than had been predicted from photochemical models based on the 2003 Mexico City study. Strong southerly flow resulted in transport of pollutants from the T0 to T1 and T2 surface sites on several flight days. On these days, it was observed that peroxide concentrations slightly decreased as the G-1 flew progressively downwind. This observation is consistent with low or negative net peroxide production rates calculated for the source region and is due to the very high NOx concentrations above the Mexico City plateau. However, relatively high values of peroxide were observed at takeoff and landing near Veracruz, a site with much higher humidity and lower NOx concentrations

    Glucose-lactate metabolic cooperation in cancer: insights from a spatial mathematical model and implications for targeted therapy

    A recent study has hypothesised a glucose–lactate metabolic symbiosis between adjacent hypoxic and oxygenated regions of a developing tumour, and proposed a treatment strategy to target this symbiosis. However, in vivo experimental support remains inconclusive. Here we develop a minimal spatial mathematical model of glucose–lactate metabolism to examine, in principle, whether metabolic symbiosis is plausible in human tumours, and to assess the potential impact of inhibiting it. We find that symbiosis is a robust feature of our model system—although on the length scale at which oxygen supply is diffusion-limited, its occurrence requires very high cellular metabolic activity—and that necrosis in the tumour core is reduced in the presence of symbiosis. Upon simulating therapeutic inhibition of lactate uptake, we predict that targeted treatment increases the extent of tissue oxygenation without increasing core necrosis. The oxygenation effect is correlated strongly with the extent of wild-type hypoxia and only weakly with wild-type symbiotic behaviour, and therefore may be promising for radiosensitisation of hypoxic, lactate-consuming tumours even if they do not exhibit a spatially well-defined symbiosis. Finally, we conduct in vitro experiments on the U87 glioblastoma cell line to facilitate preliminary speculation as to where highly malignant tumours might fall in our parameter space, and find that these experiments suggest a weakly symbiotic regime for U87 cells, thus raising the new question of what relationship might exist between symbiosis and tumour malignancy

    This article draws upon developments in UK research on political rhetoric and political performance in order to examine the incident in 2013 when French President François Hollande committed French forces to a US-led punitive strike against Syria, after the use of chemical weapons in a Damascus suburb on 21 August. The US-led retaliation did not take place. This article analyses Hollande's declaration on 27 July and his TV appearance on 15 September. His rhetoric and style are best understood as generic to the nature of the presidential office of the Fifth Republic. The article concludes by appraising how analysis of the French case contributes to the developing literature on rhetoric, celebrity and performance

    Low-energy Coulomb excitation of 62^{62}Fe and 62^{62}Mn following in-beam decay of 62^{62}Mn

    Sub-barrier Coulomb-excitation was performed on a mixed beam of 62^{62}Mn and 62^{62}Fe, following in-trap β\beta^{-} decay of 62^{62}Mn at REX-ISOLDE, CERN. The trapping and charge breeding times were varied in order to alter the composition of the beam, which was measured by means of an ionisation chamber at the zero-angle position of the Miniball array. A new transition was observed at 418~keV, which has been tentatively associated to a (2+,3+)1g.s.+(2^{+},3^{+})\rightarrow1^{+}_{g.s.} transition. This fixes the relative positions of the β\beta-decaying 4+4^{+} and 1+1^{+} states in 62^{62}Mn for the first time. Population of the 21+2^{+}_{1} state was observed in 62^{62}Fe and the cross-section determined by normalisation to the 109^{109}Ag target excitation, confirming the B(E2)B(E2) value measured in recoil-distance lifetime experiments.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figure

    Determination of the QCD color factor ratio CA/CF from the scale dependence of multiplicity in three jet events

    I examine the determination of the QCD color factor ratio CA/CF from the scale evolution of particle multiplicity in e+e- three jet events. I fit an analytic expression for the multiplicity in three jet events to event samples generated with QCD multihadronic event generators. I demonstrate that a one parameter fit of CA/CF yields the expected result CA/CF=2.25 in the limit of asymptotically large energies if energy conservation is included in the calculation. In contrast, a two parameter fit of CA/CF and a constant offset to the gluon jet multiplicity, proposed in a recent study, does not yield CA/CF=2.25 in this limit. I apply the one parameter fit method to recently published data of the DELPHI experiment at LEP and determine the effective value of CA/CF from this technique, at the finite energy of the Z0 boson, to be 1.74+-0.03+-0.10, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.Comment: 20 pages including 6 figures Version 2 corrects typographical error in equation (2
