    Quantum teleportation with pair-coherent states

Recently it has been argued that all presently performed continuous variable quantum teleportation experiments could be explained using a local hidden variable theory. In this paper we study a modification of the original protocol which requires a fully quantum mechanical explanation even when coherent states are teleported. Our calculations of the fidelity of teleportation using a pair-coherent state under ideal conditions suggests that fidelity above the required limit of 1/2 may be achievable in an experiment also.Comment: Based on talks at the QIP workshop in 6th Joint Conference on Mathematics and Computer Science, Pecs, 12-15 July 2006; and Quantum 2006 - Workshop ad memoriam Carlo Novero, Turin. v2: Added reference to give credit to L. Optimized quantum random-walk search algorithms

Shenvi, Kempe and Whaley's quantum random-walk search (SKW) algorithm [Phys. Rev. A 67, 052307 (2003)] is known to require O(N)O(\sqrt N) number of oracle queries to find the marked element, where NN is the size of the search space. The overall time complexity of the SKW algorithm differs from the best achievable on a quantum computer only by a constant factor. We present improvements to the SKW algorithm which yield significant increase in success probability, and an improvement on query complexity such that the theoretical limit of a search algorithm succeeding with probability close to one is reached. We point out which improvement can be applied if there is more than one marked element to find.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures. Major revision according to referee repor

Controlled-NOT gates for four-level atoms in a bimodal cavity

We present a construction of the full set of controlled-not gates for four-level atoms trapped in a bimodal cavity. The qubits are defined as the two ground states of every atom and the single photon subspace of the cavity Hilbert space. For the construction we employ the dispersive interaction of the ground states and the cavity, and also single-qubit operations. The possibility to implement the full set of controlled-not gates indicates that the system is suitable for universal Quantum Computation

A 2D Quantum Walk Simulation of Two-Particle Dynamics

Multi-dimensional quantum walks can exhibit highly non-trivial topological structure, providing a powerful tool for simulating quantum information and transport systems. We present a flexible implementation of a 2D optical quantum walk on a lattice, demonstrating a scalable quantum walk on a non-trivial graph structure. We realized a coherent quantum walk over 12 steps and 169 positions using an optical fiber network. With our broad spectrum of quantum coins we were able to simulate the creation of entanglement in bipartite systems with conditioned interactions. Introducing dynamic control allowed for the investigation of effects such as strong non-linearities or two-particle scattering. Our results illustrate the potential of quantum walks as a route for simulating and understanding complex quantum systems

Demand Versus Supply: Assessing the Capacity of MPA Programs to Satisfy the Growing Need for Professional Management in Local Government

This article addresses concerns expressed by members of the International City/ County Management Association (ICMA) regarding whether the supply of qualified local government managers will keep pace with the future demand for this occupation. The authors developed several important observations, which are based on decades of experience with a Master of Public Administration (MPA) program focused on local government management, plus strategic planning experience in over 100 local governments. First, it is likely that the impending retirement of the Baby Boom generation of city managers will cause some supply shortages of professional managers in specific geographical regions of the country. Second, increases in the number of professionally managed cities creates the probability that some municipalities, due to their lack of associational attractiveness, may experience difficulty in generating sufficient pools of quality applicants. We suggest that MPA programs continue to nurture communication and relationships with local governments that will lead to specific mutual benefits. For instance, MPA programs benefit from the availability of practitioner speakers and student internships and, in turn, local governments benefit from the creation of a pipeline that provides a continual stream of quality applications

The aim of the study was to assess the caries prevalence and oral hygiene in groups of adolescents living in different Hungarian localities and to establish correlations with socio-economic factors. Examinations of caries and oral hygiene were performed in 586 14-16 year old children. The percentage of caries free children was 5.1%, the DMFT and DMFS values were 6.97±4.67 and 9.95±7.94 respectively. The VPI index was 41.6±32.7% (mean±S.D.), and showed positive correlation with the caries prevalence. The DMFT and DMFS values, as well as VPI decreased as the educational level of the father increased. The number of siblings had a worsening effect on DMFT, DMFS and VPI values. There was some relationship between the previous fluoride prophylaxis and decrease of DMF values, although the difference proved to be statistically non significant. These findings indicate the necessity of organized dental preventive measures
