Offshoring, Local Market Entry, and the Strategic Context of Cross-Border Alliances: The Impact on the Governance Mode
International alliances have been studied in considerable depth, but almost entirely as host market entry options. And while much global value production is done through international alliances, the organizational forms used to control dispersed value chains are often reduced to make or buy – that is, captive operations vs. market-based outsourcing. We examine how strategic purpose (vertical or offshore production vs. horizontal or production for local market entry) affects the choice of cooperative governance form. We contend that an offshore production role as opposed to a market entry strategy, makes an alliance more likely to be governed as a contractual alliance than as a joint venture. Data on 261 cross-border alliances in the major appliances industry largely support our hypotheses. Further strategic purpose moderates the effects of alliance activities and of the institutional environment of the host country on the choice of governance form

Managing design and designers for strategic renewal
For producers of traditional or high-tech consumer durables seeking to differentiate themselves from their competitors, the role of the product designer is increasingly taking a key role. In fact design and designers can contribute to corporate strategic renewal, and this paper proposes a framework for understanding how this can be achieved. Building on a study of outstanding innovators in product design – names such as Apple, Alessi and Bang & Olufsen – the authors describe design-driven renewal as a four-phase process stimulated and supported by design, combining continuous product innovation with the periodic revision of the strategic course of the company. For each phase, it discusses the specific role of managers and the most common pitfalls that arise from poor management of the process
A 62 MeV proton beam for the treatment of ocular melanoma at Laboratori Nazionali del Sud-INFN (CATANIA)
At the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare-Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (INFN-LNS) in Catania, Italy, the first Italian protontherapy facility, named Centro di AdroTerapia e Applicazioni Nucleari Avanzate (CATANA) has been built in collaboration with the University of Catania. It is based on the use of the 62-MeV proton beam delivered by the K=800 Superconducting Cyclotron installed and working at INFN-LNS since 1995. The facility is mainly devoted to the treatment of ocular diseases like uveal melanoma. A beam treatment line in air has been assembled together with a dedicated positioning patient system. The facility has been in operation since the beginning of 2002 and 66 patients have been successfully treated up to now. The main features of CATANA together with the clinical and dosimetric features will be extensively described; particularly, the proton beam line, that has been entirely built at LNS, with all its elements, the experimental transversal and depth dose distributions of the 62-MeV proton beam obtained for a final collimator of 25-mm diameter and the experimental depth dose distributions of a modulated proton beam obtained for the same final collimator. Finally, the clinical results over 1 yr of treatments, describing the features of the treated diseases will be reported
The entry in international markets
After having illustrated the drivers and impact of globalization on industries and business strategies, the reasons that have prevented a full connection of national economies and a homogeneity of preferences and habits of local consumers are highlighted. These reasons are attributable to administrative, cultural, geographical and economic differences between countries which make entry into foreign markets difficult and expensive. The selection of foreign markets must therefore take into account not only elements of attractiveness such as market growth, but also internal and external factors that reduce attractiveness. An entry strategy based on an alliance with a local partner can make it possible to overcome these barriers and facilitate the understanding of the host context and the design of appropriate adaptation strategies
