    Robot-assisted resection of gastric duplication cysts in a child: a detailed case report.

    Gastric duplication cysts (GDCs) represent 4-9% of alimentary tract duplications. Early diagnosis and surgical excision are essential to avoid morbidity or neoplastic degeneration. Roboticassisted excision of GDCs has never been described in childhood. We report an asymptomatic male patient with 2 gastric cystic masses at ultrasonography (US)-study (diameter 25mm and 8mm), increasing in size at follow-up. At 20 months of age, magnetic- resonance-imaging-scan confirmed 2 round gastric masses (44×35mm and 16×12mm, respectively). Two months later, an elective robotic-assisted excision of GDCs was completed without complications. The patient was discharged at day 6 after procedure. Histology confirmed the diagnosis of GDCs. At a 2-year follow- up, US-study did not evidence any issue. In this first reported case of robotic-assisted cystectomy for CGD in childhood, the procedure seems safe, effective, and feasible. This approach improves the movements of the surgical instruments with better 3- D visualization in comparison with the laparoscopic approach

    Enhanced Intersystem Crossing and Transient Electron Spin Polarization in a Photoexcited Pentacene-Trityl Radical

    Identifying and characterizing systems that generate well-defined states with large electron spin polarization is of high interest for applications in molecular spintronics, high-energy physics and magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The generation of electron spin polarization on free-radical substituents tethered to pentacene derivatives has recently gained a great deal of interest for its applications in molecular electronics. After photoexcitation of the chromophore, pentacene-radical derivatives can rapidly form spin-polarized triplet excited states through enhanced intersystem crossing. Under the right conditions, the triplet spin polarization, arising from mS-selective intersystem crossing rates, can be transferred to the tethered stable radical. The efficiency of this spin polarization transfer depends on many factors: local magnetic and electric fields, excited state energetics, molecular geometry, and spin-spin coupling. Here we present transient electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements on three pentacene derivatives tethered to Finland trityl, BDPA or TEMPO radicals to explore the influence of the nature of the radical on the spin polarization transfer. We observe efficient polarization transfer between the pentacene excited triplet and the trityl radical, but do not observe the same for the BDPA and TEMPO derivatives. The polarization transfer behavior in the pentacene-trityl system is also investigated in different glassy matrices and is found to depend markedly on the solvent used. The EPR results are rationalized with the help of femtosecond and nanosecond transient absorption measurements, yielding complementary information on the excited-state dynamics of the three pentacene derivatives. Notably, we observe a two orders of magnitude difference in the timescale of triplet formation between the pentacene-trityl system and the pentacene systems tethered with the BDPA and TEMPO radicals

    Rise of pediatric robotic surgery in Italy: a multicenter observational retrospective study

    open15noAbstract Background: The minimally invasive surgery (MIS) in term of robot-assisted surgery changed in a dramatic way the surgical approach either in adults or children. For many specialties (urology, gynecology, general surgery) robotic surgery rapidly became the gold standard for some procedures, while the experience in pediatric population is not wide for some reasons. The aim of this study is to retrospective analyze trends of application of robotic surgery in pediatric patients across the country, focusing on indications, limitations, development, and training acquired by national experience and in comparison to the literature. Methods: We made a retrospective multicenter study on behalf of Italian Society of Pediatric Surgery. We performed a census among all pediatric surgery units in the country to enroll those performing robotic surgery on children between 2013 and 2019. Results: We enrolled 7 pediatric surgery referral Centers (Ancona, Bologna, Brescia, Genova, Pavia, Pescara, Siena). A total of 303 patients were included in the study, 164 males (54%) and 139 females (46%). The most commonly performed interventions for each anatomic area were respectively atypical pulmonary resection (38%), pyeloplasty (49%), and fundoplication (30%).     International audienceLow sensitivity is the primary limitation toextending nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques tomore advanced chemical and structural studies. Photochemicallyinduced dynamic nuclear polarization (photo-CIDNP) is an NMRhyperpolarization technique where light is used to excite a suitabledonor−acceptor system, creating a spin-correlated radical pairwhose evolution drives nuclear hyperpolarization. Systems thatexhibit photo-CIDNP in solids are not common, and this effecthas, up to now, only been observed for 13C and 15N nuclei.However, the low gyromagnetic ratio and natural abundance ofthese nuclei trap the local hyperpolarization in the vicinity of thechromophore and limit the utility for bulk hyperpolarization. Here,we report the first example of optically enhanced solid-state 1HNMR spectroscopy in the high-field regime. This is achieved viaphoto-CIDNP of a donor−chromophore−acceptor molecule in a frozen solution at 0.3 T and 85 K, where spontaneous spindiffusion among the abundant strongly coupled 1H nuclei relays polarization through the whole sample, yielding a 16-fold bulk 1Hsignal enhancement under continuous laser irradiation at 450 nm.     West Nile virus transmission. results from the integrated surveillance system in Italy, 2008 to 2015

    IIn Italy a national Plan for the surveillance of imported and autochthonous human vector-borne diseases (chikungunya, dengue, Zika virus disease and West Nile virus (WNV) disease) that integrates human and veterinary (animals and vectors) surveillance, is issued and revised annually according with the observed epidemiological changes. Here we describe results of the WNV integrated veterinary and human surveillance systems in Italy from 2008 to 2015. A real time data exchange protocol is in place between the surveillance systems to rapidly identify occurrence of human and animal cases and to define and update the map of affected areas i.e. provinces during the vector activity period from June to October. WNV continues to cause severe illnesses in Italy during every transmission season, albeit cases are sporadic and the epidemiology varies by virus lineage and geographic area. The integration of surveillance activities and a multidisciplinary approach made it possible and have been fundamental in supporting implementation of and/or strengthening preventive measures aimed at reducing the risk of transmission of WNV trough blood, tissues and organ donation and to implementing further measures for vector control

Il padiglione Italiano curato dal critico milanese Luca Molinari è dedicato alla ricerca architettonica in Italia, attraverso alcune opere (circa 30) costruite selezionate in tutto il panorama italiano, è intitolato "Ailati. Riflessi dal futuro". "Il Padiglione Italia alla XII Mostra Internazionale di Architettura di Venezia, rappresenta il momento più alto e pubblico di lettura critica e di sguardo verso il futuro dell'architettura italiana" Sandro Bondi, Ministro per i Beni e le attività culturali. L'opera selezionata "La Fornace del Bersaglio", Faenza è un intervento in un'area protetta di un sito di archeologia industriale. Oltre alla conservazione e al riuso della Fornace storica sono state costruite 34 case a patio in un giardino che rappresentano una risposta tipologica all'abitare collettivo nelle campagne italiane. L'opera rientra anche nella categoria delle costruzioni a basso costo e del social housing
