El tema que se aborda es la comunicación a través de la imagen y el papel social de la misma. De aquí la importancia de poner en contexto algunos términos como el de imagen, cómo se convierte en representación social, y cómo éstas se vinculan con las formas de consumo de las sociedades, trasladando significados y valores a las mismas

    Diversity Of Short Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglows From Compact Binary Mergers Hosting Pulsars

    Short gamma-ray bursts (sGRBs) are widely believed to result from the mergers of compact binaries. This model predicts an afterglow that bears the characteristic signatures of a constant, low density medium, including a smooth prompt-afterglow transition, and a simple temporal evolution. However, these expectations are in conflict with observations for a non-negligible fraction of sGRB afterglows. In particular, the onset of the afterglow phase for some of these events appears to be delayed and, in addition, a few of them exhibit late- time rapid fading in their lightcurves. We show that these peculiar observations can be explained independently of ongoing central engine activity if some sGRB progenitors are compact binaries hosting at least one pulsar. The Poynting flux emanating from the pulsar companion can excavate a bow-shock cavity surround- ing the binary. If this cavity is larger than the shock deceleration length scale in the undisturbed interstellar medium, then the onset of the afterglow will be delayed. Should the deceleration occur entirely within the swept-up thin shell, a rapid fade in the lightcurve will ensue. We identify two types of pulsar that can achieve the conditions necessary for altering the afterglow: low field, long lived pulsars, and high field pulsars. We find that a sizable fraction (~20-50%) of low field pulsars are likely to reside in neutron star binaries based on observations, while their high field counterparts are not. Hydrodynamical calculations motivated by this model are shown to be in good agreement with observations of sGRB afterglow lightcurves.Comment: Accepted to ApjL.     Use of m-Health Technology for Preventive Interventions to Tackle Cardiometabolic Conditions and Other Non-Communicable Diseases in Latin America- Challenges and Opportunities

    In Latin America, cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality rates will increase by an estimated 145% from 1990 to 2020. Several challenges related to social strains, inadequate public health infrastructure, and underfinanced healthcare systems make cardiometabolic conditions and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) difficult to prevent and control. On the other hand, the region has high mobile phone coverage, making mobile health (mHealth) particularly attractive to complement and improve strategies toward prevention and control of these conditions in low- and middle-income countries. In this article, we describe the experiences of three Centers of Excellence for prevention and control of NCDs sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute with mHealth interventions to address cardiometabolic conditions and other NCDs in Argentina, Guatemala, and Peru. The nine studies described involved the design and implementation of complex interventions targeting providers, patients and the public.     Invasive Rats (\u3ci\u3eRattus\u3c/i\u3e sp.), but not always Mice (\u3ci\u3eMus musculus\u3c/i\u3e), are Ubiquitous at All Elevations and Habitats within the Caribbean National Forest, Puerto Rico

    Invasive rodents, particularly rats (Rattus spp.), occupy \u3e80% of the world’s islands and are among the greatest threats to native biodiversity and agriculture on islands. At the time of their introduction in the 1500s, there was at least 1 native rat species in Puerto Rico. Today there are no native rodents remaining in Puerto Rico, but R. norvegicus (Norway Rat) may be found in urban settings, and R. rattus (Black Rat) are the most common rat across the island including within natural areas, and invasive Mus musculus (House Mouse) may also be found in urban and non-urban habitats. The Caribbean National Forest (CNF; locally El Yunque) in northeastern Puerto Rico has some native and endangered species vulnerable to rat predation. The objective of our study was to determine the presence and distribution of invasive rodents (rats and mice) across elevations and habitats within the CNF. We used 104 tracking tunnels, which are baited ink cards placed in tunnels so that foot prints of animal visitors could be identified, to determine presence of invasive rodent species. We placed 3 tracking tunnels at each 50-m elevation-gain (n = 66 total tunnels), on the edge of forest habitat from sea level to 1070 m at El Yunque peak along the main road (Highway 191) through the CNF. We established additional tracking tunnels (n = 38) in the major habitats in the CNF, including treefall and hurricane gaps, landslides, stream edges, and continuous forest. House Mice had not been previously reported in the CNF, and were found only at the forest edge along Highway 191 at elevations of 50–150 m and 300–1070 m, whereas rats (Rattus sp.) were found at all elevations and in all habitat types sampled. Logistic regressions revealed that mice and rat presence each increases with elevation (mice: P = 0.0352, rat: P = 0.0019), though total rodent presence did not. Knowledge of the habitat types and elevations that these invasive rodents occupy can inform management strategies for rodent control and native species protection

    Classifying vocabulary in Google Sheets to improve word recognition and reading comprehension in EFL learners: an action research study

    Introduction: University students had problems understanding texts. This study aimed at analyzing the effects of classifying vocabulary into parts of speech through Google Sheets to improve students’ word recognition and its incidence in reading comprehension. It analyzes the students’ perspectives on learning vocabulary.  Method: The study used an action research method, pre-post surveys, and pre-post tests were applied. Results: The findings proved that classifying “parts of speech” facilitated the improvement of reading comprehension skills, with an effect size of d=0.81. Second, it confirmed that knowing vocabulary form raises students’ awareness to identify and classify words correctly. Third, the application of the study changed positively participants’ perspectives regarding learning vocabulary. Conclusion: Therefore, due to Ecuadorian learners’ need in training and to the little literature about parts of speech, the positive results of this action research can be a venue to reduce those gaps.Introdução: Estudantes universitários tiveram problemas para entender textos. Assim, este estudo teve como objetivo analisar os efeitos da classificação do vocabulário em partes do discurso por meio do Google Planilhas para melhorar o reconhecimento de palavras dos alunos e sua incidência na compreensão da leitura. Além disso, o estudo analisou as perspectivas dos estudantes sobre o vocabulário de aprendizagem. Metodologia: O estudo utilizou um método de pesquisa-ação, foram aplicadas um pré e pós questionário e um pré e pós teste. Resultados: Os resultados provaram que a classificação de "partes do discurso" facilitou a melhoria das habilidades de compreensão leitora, com um tamanho de efeito de d = 0,81. Segundo, confirmou que conhecer o formulário de vocabulário aumenta a conscientização dos alunos para identificar e classificar as palavras corretamente. Terceiro, a aplicação do estudo mudou positivamente a perspectiva dos participantes em relação a aprendizagem de vocabulário.  Conclusão: Portanto, devido à necessidade de treinamento dos alunos equatorianos e à pouca literatura sobre partes do discurso, os resultados positivos dessa pesquisa-ação podem ser uma oportunidade para reduzir essas lacunas

    Bacteremia caused by an Acinetobacter junii strain harboring class 1 integron and diverse DNA mobile elements

    INTRODUCTION: Infections caused by Acinetobacter junii are rarely reported. However, some outbreaks of septicemia in neonates and pediatric oncology patients, as well as meningitis, peritonitis, and ocular infection have been described. Since it is highly infrequent to find the molecular characterization of A. junii strains in literature, in this study we described the molecular characterization of A. junii isolates recovered from blood samples of a renal transplant patient. METHODOLOGY: The case was defined as a catheter-related bacteremia caused by A. junii. The patient responded favorably after catheter removal and treatment with ciprofloxacin. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The complete molecular characterization of the isolate showed that it harbored a class 1 integron and diverse DNA mobile elements. This explains its genomic plasticity for acquiring antimicrobial resistance determinants and for adapting to a nosocomial niche.Fil: Traglia, German Matias.
