A Possibility to Observe Short-Range NN Properties in the Deuteron Breakup pdppnpd\to ppn

    Get PDF
Quasi-binary reaction of the deuteron breakup p+d(pp)+np+d\to (pp)+n with the final proton-proton pair (pp)(pp) in the 1S0^1S_0 state is analyzed at initial energies 0.520.5 - 2 GeV in the kinematics of backward elastic pd-scattering pddppd\to dp. On the basis of the main mechanisms of the pddppd\to dp process, including initial and final state interaction, we show that unpolarized cross section and spin observables of this reaction exhibit important properties of the half-off-shell pp(1S0)pp(^1S_0)-scattering amplitude, which are relevant to the nucleon-nucleon interaction at short distances.Comment: 9 pages, Latex, 3 Postscript figure

    Dilepton Production in Nucleon-Nucleon Interactions

Starting from a realistic one--boson--exchange--model fitted to the amplitudes of elastic nucleon--nucleon scattering and the process NNNΔNN\rightarrow N\Delta we perform a fully relativistic and gauge invariant calculation for the dilepton production in nucleon--nucleon collisions, including the important effect of propagating the Δ\Delta--resonance. We compare the results of our calculations with the latest experimental data on dilepton production. We also show how to implement various electromagnetic formfactors for the hadrons in our calculations without loosing gauge--invariance and discuss their influence on dilepton spectra.Comment: 24 pages, figures will be sent on reques

On contribution of three-body forces to NdNd interaction at intermediate energies

    Get PDF
Available data on large-angle nucleon-deuteron elastic scattering NddNNd\to dN below the pion threshold give a signal for three-body forces. There is a problem of separation of possible subtle aspects of these forces from off-shell effects in two-nucleon potentials. By considering the main mechanisms of the process, we show qualitatively that in the quasi-binary reaction N+d(NN)+NN+d\to (NN)+N with the final spin singlet NN-pair in the S-state the relative contribution of the 3N forces differs substantially from the elastic channel. It gives a new testing ground for the problem in question.Comment: 9 pages, Latex, 3 Postscript figure

Role of the N*(1440) resonance in the pp->pnpi+ reaction

New measurement by CELSIUS-WASA Collaboration on the pp->pn pi+ reaction reveals clear evidence for the presence of the Roper resonance N*(1440) which has been ignored in previous theoretical calculations. In this article, based on an effective Lagrangian approach and available knowledge on the Roper resonance, we investigate the role of the Roper resonance for the pp->pn pi+ reaction. It is found that the contribution from the Roper resonance N*(1440) becomes significant for kinetic energy above 1.1 GeV, consistent with the new experimental observation. The t-channel sigma-meson exchange is dominant for the production of the Roper resonance.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure

Prevalence of Premature Ovarian Failure in Women with Tuberous Sclerosis

Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) is an autosomal dominant tumor suppressor disorder characterized by hamartomas, or benign growths, in various organ systems. Inactivating mutations in either the TSC1 or the TSC2 gene cause most cases of TSC. Recently, the use of ovarian specific conditional knock-out mouse models has demonstrated a crucial role of the TSC genes in ovarian function. Mice with complete deletion of Tsc1 or Tsc2 showed accelerated ovarian follicle activation and subsequent premature follicular depletion, consistent with the human condition premature ovarian failure (POF). POF is defined in women as the cessation of menses before the age of 40 and elevated levels of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). The prevalence of POF is estimated to be 1%, affecting a substantial number of women in the general population. Nonetheless, the etiology of most cases of POF remains unknown. Based on the mouse model results, we hypothesized that the human TSC1 and TSC2 genes are likely to be crucial for ovarian development and function. Moreover, since women with TSC already have one inactivated TSC gene, we further hypothesized that they may show a higher prevalence of POF. To test this hypothesis, we surveyed 1000 women with TSC belonging to the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance, a national support organization. 182 questionnaires were analyzed for information on menstrual and reproductive function, as well as TSC. This self-reported data revealed 8 women (4.4%) with possible POF, as determined by menstrual history report and additional supportive data. This prevalence is much higher than 1% in the general population. Data from all women suggested other reproductive pathology associated with TSC such as a high rate of miscarriage (41.2%) and menstrual irregularity of any kind (31.2%). These results establish a previously unappreciated effect of TSC on women’s reproductive health. Moreover, these data suggest that perturbations in the cellular pathways regulated by the TSC genes may play an important role in reproductive function

Delta--Excitation and Exchange Corrections for NN--Bremsstrahlung

The role of the relativistic amplitudes for a number of O(k){\cal O}(k) processes usually neglected in potential model calculations of NN--bremsstrahlung is investigated. In particular, we consider the Δ\Delta--excitation pole contributions related to the one--pion and one--rho exchange and in addition include the exchange contributions induced by the radiative ω,ρπγ\omega,\,\rho \to \pi \gamma decays. The contributions are calculated from relativistic Born amplitudes fitted to Δ\Delta--production and absorption data in the energy range up to 1 GeV and then used to supplement potential model and soft photon calculations for nucleon--nucleon bremsstrahlung. The effects on NNγNN\gamma--observables, although moderate in general, are found to be important in some kinematic domains.Comment: 15 pages in LaTex, using Revtex, 6 figures as uufile'd, compressed Postscript file included, TRIUMF preprint TRI-PP-94-9
