Characterization and Classification of Collaborative Tools

Traditionally, collaboration has been a means for organizations to do their work. However, the context in which they do this work is changing, especially in regards to where the work is done, how the work is organized, who does the work, and with this the characteristics of collaboration. Software development is no exception; it is itself a collaborative effort that is likewise affected by these changes. In the context of both open source software development projects and communities and organizations that develop corporate products, more and more developers need to communicate and liaise with colleagues in geographically distant places about the software product they are conceiving, designing, building, testing, debugging, deploying and maintaining. Thus, work teams face sizeable collaborative challenges, for which they have need of tools that they can use to communicate and coordinate their Work efficiently

    Improving instruction scheduling in GPGPUs

GPU architectures have become popular for executing general-purpose programs. Moreover, they are some of the most efficient architectures for machine learning applications which are among the most trendy and demanding applications these days. GPUs rely on having a large number of threads that run concurrently to hide the latency among dependent instructions. This work presents SOCGPU (Simple Out-of-order Core for GPU), a simple out-of-order execution mechanism that does not require register renaming nor scoreboards. It uses a small Instruction Buffer and a tiny Dependence matrix to keep track of dependencies among instructions and avoid data hazards. Evaluations for an Nvidia GTX1080TI-like GPU show that SOCGPU provides a speed-up up to 3.76 in some machine learning programs and 1.58 on average for a variety of benchmarks, while it reduces energy consumption by 17.6%, with only 3.48% area overhead when using the same number of warps as the baseline. Moreover, we show that SOCGPU can reduce the number of concurrently running warps without hardly affecting performance, which can provide significant reductions in area, especially in the register file and the instruction scheduler logic, as well as other hardware structures of the GPU cores

Collaborative Development within Open Source Communities

Open source communities are one of the most successful-- and least appreciated--examples of high-performance collaboration and community building on the Internet today. Open source communities began as loosely organized, ad-hoc communities of contributors from all over the world who shared an interest in meeting a common need. However, the organization of these communities has proven to be very flexible and capable of carrying out all kind of developments, ranging from minor projects to huge programs such as Apache (Höhn, & Herr, 2004; Mockus, Fielding, & Herbsleb, 2005

Flow Blurring-Enabled Production of Polymer Filaments from Poly(ethylene oxide) Solutions

Flow blurring (FB) atomizers are relatively simple yet robust devices used for the generation of sprays from solutions of a wide range of viscosities. In this work, we have demonstrated that FB devices may also be applied for massive production of liquid filaments from polymeric solutions. They can later be transformed into solid filaments and fibers, leading to the production of so-called fiber mats. The liquid precursors consisted of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) solutions of varying molecular weights (105 [100k] to 4 × 106 g/mol [4M]) and concentrations. The FB device was operated in the gas pressure range of 3−6 bar. Except for solutions of PEO 100k, all solutions exhibited a shear thinning behavior. For massive filament production, a threshold polymer concentration (ct) was identified for each molecular weight. Below such concentration, the atomization resulted in droplets (the classical FB functioning mode). Such a threshold value decreased as the PEO molecular weight increased, and it coincides with the polymer coil overlap concentration, c*. The viscoelastic nature of the solutions was also observed to increase with the molecular weight. A 3.2 dependency of the zero-shear rate viscosity on a so-called Bueche parameter was found for filament production, whereas a nearly linear dependency was found for droplet production. In general, the mean diameter of the filaments decreased as they traveled downstream from the atomization point. Furthermore, at a given distance from the atomizer outlet and gas pressure, the mean filament diameter slightly shifted toward larger sizes with increasing PEO molecular weight. The tendency agrees well with the calculated filaments’ Deborah number, which increases with PEO molecular weight. The approach presented herein describes a highthroughput and efficient method for the massive production of viscous filaments. These may be transformed into fibers by an on-line drying step.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad DPI2016-78887-C3-1-

Spatiotemporal instability of a confined capillary jet

Recent experimental studies on the instability appearance of capillary jets have revealed the capabilities of linear spatiotemporal instability analysis to predict the parametrical map where steady jetting or dripping takes place. In this work, we present an extensive analytical, numerical and experimental analysis of confined capillary jets extending previous studies. We propose an extended, accurate analytic model in the limit of low Reynolds flows, and introduce a numerical scheme to predict the system response when the liquid inertia is not negligible. Theoretical predictions show a remarkable accuracy with results from the extensive experimental exploration provided.Comment: Submitted to the Physical Review E (20-March-2008

DRESS syndrome (Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms) is a rare pathology in Pediatrics, first described in 1996 by Bocquet. It can appear in a variable period of time after exposure to some medications, it is characterized by fever, skin involvement and internal organs.  A 13-year-old patient is presented, with a history of use of Trimethoprim sulfa for two months, with a disease of three days of evolution, consisting of fever and skin rash, without mucosal involvement, with an unfavorable response to steroid management, requiring Intravenous inmunoglobulin. Weeks after the onset of symptoms and stable evolution, he presented acute renal failure that required renal replacement therapy. Other underlying autoimmune pathologies were ruled out. There was recovery of renal function test and normalization of the other paraclinical on day 40 of the disease.   Patient remains asymptomatic four months later, with oral steroid treatment, in slow and gradual decline. Permanent evaluation of renal function tests should be considered in patients with DRESS syndrome, due to its association with acute tubulointerstitial nephritis and related complications.
