    Meter-scale spark X-ray spectrumstatistics

    Get PDF
X-ray emission by sparks implies bremsstrahlung from a population of energetic electrons, but the details of this process remain a mystery. We present detailed statistical analysis of X-ray spectra detected by multiple detectors during sparks produced by 1 MV negative high-voltage pulses with 1 μ\mus risetime. With over 900 shots, we statistically analyze the signals, assuming that the distribution of spark X-ray fluence behaves as a power law and that the energy spectrum of X-rays detectable after traversing \sim2 m of air and a thin aluminum shield is exponential. We then determine the parameters of those distributions by fitting cumulative distribution functions to the observations. The fit results match the observations very well if the mean of the exponential X-ray energy distribution is 86 ±\pm 7 keV and the spark X-ray fluence power law distribution has index -1.29 ±\pm 0.04 and spans at least 3 orders of magnitude in fluence

Interactions between different forms of bovine lactoferrin and sodium alginate affect the properties of their mixtures

The interactions between different forms (apo-, native- and holo-) of lactoferrin (Lf) and sodium alginate at different ratios in aqueous solution in the pH range of 4-7 were evaluated. Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR) spectra of freeze dried mixtures showed shifts only in the bands arising from the carboxylate groups of alginate relative to physical mixtures; indicating intermolecular interactions involving COO- moieties of alginate. Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy showed that Lf retained its tertiary structure in the Lf-alginate mixtures. In the pH range of 4-7, the zeta-potential of Lf-alginate solutions was significantly less negative than that of alginate indicating charge compensation. Native-PAGE results indicated that the extent of binding of Lf by alginate was dependent of the form of Lf with apo-Lf displaying a higher binding affinity. At natural pH, the Lf-alginate mixtures generated higher viscosities than their respective sodium alginate controls indicating the existence of intermolecular interactions between the two components. A mixture of native-Lf and sodium alginate showed the highest increase in the viscosity while increasing level of iron saturation in Lf showed an inverse effect on viscosity. DSC analysis showed that the thermal denaturation temperature of native-and holo-Lf can be enhanced upon interaction with alginate in solution. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

Potential of the Red Macroalga Bonnemaisonia hamifera in Reducing Methane Emissions from Ruminants

Researchers have been exploring seaweeds to reduce methane (CH4) emissions from livestock. This study aimed to investigate the potential of a red macroalga, B. hamifera, as an alternative to mitigate CH4 emissions. B. hamifera, harvested from the west coast of Sweden, was used in an in vitro experiment using a fully automated gas production system. The experiment was a randomized complete block design consisting of a 48 h incubation that included a control (grass silage) and B. hamifera inclusions at 2.5%, 5.0%, and 7.5% of grass silage OM mixed with buffered rumen fluid. Predicted in vivo CH4 production and total gas production were estimated by applying a set of models to the gas production data and in vitro fermentation characteristics were evaluated. The results demonstrated that the inclusion of B. hamifera reduced (p = 0.01) predicted in vivo CH4 and total gas productions, and total gas production linearly decreased (p = 0.03) with inclusion of B. hamifera. The molar proportion of propionate increased (p = 0.03) while isovalerate decreased (p = 0.04) with inclusion of B. hamifera. Chemical analyses revealed that B. hamifera had moderate concentrations of polyphenols. The iodine content was low, and there was no detectable bromoform, suggesting quality advantages over Asparagopsis taxiformis. Additionally, B. hamifera exhibited antioxidant activity similar to Resveratrol. The findings of this study indicated that B. hamifera harvested from temperate waters of Sweden possesses capacity to mitigate CH4 in vitro

Pressure Actuated Leaf Seals for Improved Turbine Shaft Sealing

    Get PDF
This presentation introduces a shaft seal in which leaf seal elements are constructed from slotted shim material formed and layered into a frusto-conical assembly. Limited elastic deflection of seal leaves with increasing system pressure close large startup clearance to a small, non-contacting, steady state running clearance. At shutdown seal elements resiliently retract as differential seal pressure diminishes. Large seal clearance during startup and shutdown provides a mechanism for rub avoidance. Minimum operating clearance improves performance and non-contacting operation promises long seal life. Design features of this seal, sample calculations at differential pressures up to 2400 psid and benefit comparison with brush and labyrinth seals is documented in paper, AIAA 2005 3985, presented at the Advanced Seal Technology session of the Joint Propulsion Conference in Tucson this past July. In this presentation use of bimetallic leaf material will be discussed. Frictional heating of bimetallic leaf seals during a seal rub can relieve the rub condition to some extent with a change in seal shape. Improved leaf seal rub tolerance is expected with bimetallic material

Off-the-Hook: An Efficient and Usable Client-Side Phishing Prevention Application

    Get PDF
Phishing is a major problem on the Web. Despite the significant attention it has received over the years, there has been no definitive solution. While the state-of-the-art solutions have reasonably good performance, they suffer from several drawbacks including potential to compromise user privacy, difficulty of detecting phishing websites whose content change dynamically, and reliance on features that are too dependent on the training data. To address these limitations we present a new approach for detecting phishing webpages in real-time as they are visited by a browser. It relies on modeling inherent phisher limitations stemming from the constraints they face while building a webpage. Consequently, the implementation of our approach, Off-the-Hook, exhibits several notable properties including high accuracy, brand-independence and good language-independence, speed of decision, resilience to dynamic phish and resilience to evolution in phishing techniques. Off-the-Hook is implemented as a fully-client-side browser add-on, which preserves user privacy. In addition, Off-the-Hook identifies the target website that a phishing webpage is attempting to mimic and includes this target in its warning. We evaluated Off-the-Hook in two different user studies. Our results show that users prefer Off-the-Hook warnings to Firefox warnings.Phishing is a major problem on the Web.
