PROJECTED CONSUMPTION OF LIVESTOCK PRODUCTS
The U.S. consumption pattern of livestock products has changed considerably and is expected to keep changing. The first part of this paper reviews the consumption trends and the price and nonprice factors affecting those trends. In the second part, future consumption patterns are projected. The projections of the constant income elasticity model and the Tornquist functions are rejected due to recent trends which do not receive enough weight in these models. A third model which projects consumption shares is selected as a more accurate predictor. By the year 2010, national consumption of beef is estimated to decrease by 5 to 10%; pork to increase by up to 5%. Lamb and mutton will continue to be consumed less. Analytical and numerical studies of disordered spin-1 Heisenberg chains with aperiodic couplings
We investigate the low-temperature properties of the one-dimensional spin-1
Heisenberg model with geometric fluctuations induced by aperiodic but
deterministic coupling distributions, involving two parameters. We focus on two
aperiodic sequences, the Fibonacci sequence and the 6-3 sequence. Our goal is
to understand how these geometric fluctuations modify the physics of the
(gapped) Haldane phase, which corresponds to the ground state of the uniform
spin-1 chain. We make use of different adaptations of the strong-disorder
renormalization-group (SDRG) scheme of Ma, Dasgupta and Hu, widely employed in
the study of random spin chains, supplemented by quantum Monte Carlo and
density-matrix renormalization-group numerical calculations, to study the
nature of the ground state as the coupling modulation is increased. We find no
phase transition for the Fibonacci chain, while we show that the 6-3 chain
exhibits a phase transition to a gapless, aperiodicity-dominated phase similar
to the one found for the aperiodic spin-1/2 XXZ chain. Contrary to what is
verified for random spin-1 chains, we show that different adaptations of the
SDRG scheme may lead to different qualitative conclusions about the nature of
the ground state in the presence of aperiodic coupling modulations.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review
Endovascular repair for acute traumatic transection of the descending thoracic aorta: experience of a single centre with a 12-years follow up
Background: Most blunt aortic injuries occur in the proximal proximal descending aorta causing acute transection
of this vessel. Generally, surgical repair of the ruptured segment of aorta is associated with high rates of morbidity
and mortality and in this view endovascular treatment seems to be a valid and safer alternative. Aim of this article
is to review our experience with endovascular approach for the treatment of acute traumatic rupture of descending
thoracic aorta.
Methods: From April 2002 to November 2014, 11 patients (9 males and 2 females) were referred to our Department
with a diagnosis of acute transection of thoracic aorta. Following preoperative Computed Tomography (CT) evaluation,
thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) with left subclavian artery coverage was performed. Follow-up consisted
clinical and instrumental (CT, Duplex ultrasound) controls at discharge, 1, 3 and 6 months and yearly thereafter.
Results: At 12-year follow up, the overall survival for the entire patients cohort was 100 %, no major or minor
neurological complications and no episode of left arm claudication occurred. Cardiovascular, respiratory and bleeding
complications, in the early period, was represented by minor, non fatal events. No stent graft failure, collapse, leak or
distal migration were detected at CT scan during the entire follow up period.
Conclusions: According to our experience, despite the small number of patient population, TEVAR procedure with
with left subclavian artery coverage, performed in emergency settings, seems to provide excellent long term results.

Protocol for a longitudinal qualitative interview study: maintaining psychological well-being in advanced cancer - what can we learn from patients' and carers' own coping strategies?
IntroductionPeople with advanced cancer and their carers experience stress and uncertainty which affects the quality of life and physical and mental health. This study aims to understand how patients and carers recover or maintain psychological well-being by exploring the strategies employed to self-manage stress and uncertainty.Methods and analysisA longitudinal qualitative interview approach with 30 patients with advanced cancer and 30 associated family or informal carers allows the exploration of contexts, mechanisms and outcomes at an individual level. Two interviews, 4–12?weeks apart, will not only enable the exploration of individuals’ evolving coping strategies in response to changing contexts but also how patients’ and carers’ strategies inter-relate. Patient and Carer focus groups will then consider how the findings may be used in developing an intervention. Recruiting through two major tertiary cancer centres in the North West and using deliberately broad and inclusive criteria will enable the sample to capture demographic and experiential breadth.Ethics and disseminationThe research team will draw on their considerable experience to ensure that the study is sensitive to a patient and carer group, which may be considered vulnerable but still values being able to contribute its views. Public and patient involvement (PPI) is integral to the design and is evidenced by: a research advisory group incorporating patient and carers, prestudy consultations with the PPI group at one of the study sites and a user as the named applicant. The study team will use multiple methods to disseminate the findings to clinical, policy and academic audiences. A key element will be engaging health professionals in patient and carer ideas for promoting self-management of psychological well-being. Black-Box Testing Liveness Properties of Partially Observable Stochastic Systems
We study black-box testing for stochastic systems and arbitrary ?-regular specifications, explicitly including liveness properties. We are given a finite-state probabilistic system that we can only execute from the initial state. We have no information on the number of reachable states, or on the probabilities; further, we can only partially observe the states. The only action we can take is to restart the system. We design restart strategies guaranteeing that, if the specification is violated with non-zero probability, then w.p.1 the number of restarts is finite, and the infinite run executed after the last restart violates the specification. This improves on previous work that required full observability. We obtain asymptotically optimal upper bounds on the expected number of steps until the last restart. We conduct experiments on a number of benchmarks, and show that our strategies allow one to find violations in Markov chains much larger than the ones considered in previous work
Radiation study of swept-charge devices for the Chandrayaan-1 X-ray Spectrometer (C1XS) instrument
The Chandrayaan-1 X-ray Spectrometer (C1XS) will be launched as part of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chandrayaan-1 payload in September 2008, arriving at the Moon within 7 days to begin a two year mission in lunar orbit conducting mineralogical surface mapping over the range of 1 - 10 keV. The detector plane of the instrument consists of twenty four e2v technologies CCD54 swept-charge devices (SCDs). Such devices were first flown in the Demonstration of a Compact Imaging X-ray Spectrometer (D-CIXS) instrument onboard SMART-1 [4, 5]. The detector plane in each case provides a total X-ray collection area of 26.4 cm2. The SCD is capable of providing near Fano-limited spectroscopy at -10°C, and at -20°C, near the Chandrayaan-1 mission average temperature, it achieves a total system noise of 6.2 electrons r.m.s. and a FWHM of 134 eV at Mn-Kalpha. This paper presents a brief overview of the C1XS mission and a detailed study of the effects of proton irradiation on SCD operational performance
New technologies to improve root canal disinfection
Effective irrigant delivery and agitation are prerequisites to promote root canal disinfection and debris removal and improve successful endodontic treatment. This paper presents an overview of the currently available technologies to improve the cleaning of the endodontic space and their debridement efficacy. A PubMed electronic search was conducted with appropriate key words to identify the relevant literature on this topic. After retrieving the full-text articles, all the articles were reviewed and the most appropriate were included in this review. Several different systems of mechanical activation of irrigants to improve endodontic disinfection were analysed: manual agitation with gutta-percha cones, endodontic instruments or special brushes, vibrating systems activated by low-speed hand-pieces or by sonic or subsonic energy, use of ultrasonic or laser energy to mechanically activate the irrigants and apical negative pressure irrigation systems. Furthermore, this review aims to describe systems designed to improve the intracanal bacterial decontamination by a specific chemical action, such as ozone, direct laser action or light-activated disinfection. The ultrasonic activation of root canal irrigants and of sodium hypochlorite in particular still remains the gold standard to which all other systems of mechanical agitation analyzed in this article were compared. From this overview, it is evident that the use of different irrigation systems can provide several advantages in the clinical endodontic outcome and that integration of new technologies, coupled with enhanced techniques and materials, may help everyday clinical practice
Topological Point Cloud Clustering
We present Topological Point Cloud Clustering (TPCC), a new method to cluster
points in an arbitrary point cloud based on their contribution to global
topological features. TPCC synthesizes desirable features from spectral
clustering and topological data analysis and is based on considering the
spectral properties of a simplicial complex associated to the considered point
cloud. As it is based on considering sparse eigenvector computations, TPCC is
similarly easy to interpret and implement as spectral clustering. However, by
focusing not just on a single matrix associated to a graph created from the
point cloud data, but on a whole set of Hodge-Laplacians associated to an
appropriately constructed simplicial complex, we can leverage a far richer set
of topological features to characterize the data points within the point cloud
and benefit from the relative robustness of topological techniques against
noise. We test the performance of TPCC on both synthetic and real-world data
and compare it with classical spectral clustering
Non-isotropic Persistent Homology: Leveraging the Metric Dependency of PH
Persistent Homology is a widely used topological data analysis tool that
creates a concise description of the topological properties of a point cloud
based on a specified filtration. Most filtrations used for persistent homology
depend (implicitly) on a chosen metric, which is typically agnostically chosen
as the standard Euclidean metric on . Recent work has tried to
uncover the 'true' metric on the point cloud using distance-to-measure
functions, in order to obtain more meaningful persistent homology results. Here
we propose an alternative look at this problem: we posit that information on
the point cloud is lost when restricting persistent homology to a single
(correct) distance function. Instead, we show how by varying the distance
function on the underlying space and analysing the corresponding shifts in the
persistence diagrams, we can extract additional topological and geometrical
information. Finally, we numerically show that non-isotropic persistent
homology can extract information on orientation, orientational variance, and
scaling of randomly generated point clouds with good accuracy and conduct some
