Economics education : literacy or mind framing? : Evidence from a survey on the social building of trust in Portugal
This paper deals on the issue of whether or not studying economics has a relevant effect on molding the values and attitudes characteristic of the trust-building processes prevailing in a democratic society. Mainstream economics teaching, based on the self-interest model of rational, maximizing, individualistic representative agents, may well cause indoctrinating effects, creating or reinforcing both political conservatism and selfishness values and behaviors among economics students. This result is confirmed by most studies in relevant literature, but it may be otherwise explained by a so-called self-selection effect, suggesting that “economists are born, not made”. In this paper a contribution to this literature is made with more empirical evidence, namely the results of a survey entitled “Social Building of Trust in Portugal”, referring to a considerable diversity of samples (economics students, other students, ordinary citizens of two counties, urban and rural) and being applied in three different years: 2006, 2009 and 2012.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
This article presents the results of much wider research carried out between the University of Cantabria (Spain) and the University of Minho (Portugal) geared towards discovering the educational possibilities of a specific category of videogames classified as serious games. In more precise terms, this article reproduces the results of the analysis of the bibliography generated on an international scale between 2008 and 2010 on video games created for use in different educational contexts. In the work we identify the main lines of research that are currently being tackled by the international community as to the use of these kinds of tools in education. The study reveals that research on serious games is being considered from a range of academic subjects and that their use does not necessarily improve pupils’ educational results
How pervasive and mobile computing can help organizations to include people with visual disabilities on their client-approach strategy?
Organizations have in-built social responsibility to society. The evolution of technology have
enable organizations to interact in an innovatively and more close approach to their clients.
But this evolution has not included people with special needs like blind people. And, even
those organizations that have enable some kind of support-approach to blind people, have
typically disjointed, incomplete and typically parallel approaches; compared to their massclient
standard approach. This paper discusses the potential of Pervasive and Mobile
Computing to support, not just an innovative and unified approach, but also a real possibility
of promoting real inclusion of blind people in what concerns to the delivery of information
and services organizations offer. This paper also represents a reflection and a mind shaking
attempt, while the authors are working in allowing blind people an autonomous buying
process, in hypermarkets, supported by the use of wireless networks and modern mobile
devices, with multiple technologies support, like Wi-Fi and inertial and magnetic sensors
Biomass residues for energy production and habitat preservation. Case study in a montado area in Southwestern Europe
The use of forest and agricultural residues for energy production presents multiple benefits, but the link between bioenergy and the environment is complex and not all of the energetic options have the same impacts. This work evaluates the net positive effect of valorizing residual biomass in the context of a rural area of Portugal, Estremoz. It focuses on the combined assessment of biomass availability, techno-economic feasibility and environmental aspects of utilizing forest and agricultural residues to produce bioheat. At first, the energy potential of the residual biomass available in the municipality is evaluated using a geographical information system database. The assessment with RETScreen of the techno-economic feasibility of replacing electricity by biomass for heating local public schools follows. The results show that around 27 314 t of residues, corresponding to about 267 680 GJ, are produced each year in Estremoz, more than half in montado areas. The use of this biomass for the replacement of the existing electric heating systems of nine local schools by biomass-based ones offers good project profitability. As far as the environment is concerned, the energetic valorization of the residual biomass in Estremoz has multiple benefits. It contributes to climate change mitigation by saving greenhouse gas emissions and promoting the preservation of the traditional extensive uses of the ecosystems. Moreover, a correct vegetation management decreases the fire risk, potentiates the increase in biodiversity, offers better conditions for native species and allows to maintain the ecosystems
Social policies, political attitudes and ageing: Results from a survey on Greater Lisbon / Políticas sociais, atitudes políticas e envelhecimento: Resultados de uma pesquisa na Grande Lisboa
This paper considers an important aspect for the assessment of public policies in Portugal, namely the opinions of laypersons or population in general, and particularly the ones regarding social policies. Such opinions, even though different from the ones of experts, must be dully taken into consideration in any assessment of the effectiveness of public policies. The study is based on a survey performed in December 2016, regarding a sample of 600 individuals living in the Greater Lisbon, stratified by gender, education and age. Its main focus is the analysis of shifting attitudes according to age. The questions refer namely to: identification with political parties; vote in recent elections; reasons for vote and/or abstention; interest for politics; features perceived in Portuguese political agents; trust in political agents; satisfaction with the functioning of democracy in Portugal; citizens’ perceived influence in political events; relevant aspects in partisan choice; self-perception in terms of left-right dimension; preference for economic market regulation, state regulation and/or regulation by the ‘third sector’; evaluation of social policies; biases within these perceptions and preferences associated with gender, levels of income, and age

Assessment of the spread of chestnut ink disease from 1995 to 2005 using aerial photography and geostatistical methods
Chestnut ink disease, caused by Phytophthora cinnamomi and P. cambivora, is responsible for important economic losses and limits the establishment of new chestnut (Castanea sativa) groves in Portugal. Although the differences in soil properties and in cropping practices affect ink severity, the regional spread of disease is not known. Data for monitoring C. sativa decline were obtained by using field surveys and Small Format Aerial Photography (SFAP), a reliable tool which provides large-scale imagery obtained at low altitude. Visible colour and near-infrared images were obtained with different cameras with an average ground resolution of 22, 14 and 39 cm. The spatial distribution of ink disease in northern Portugal for the years 1995–2004 was estimated through a geostatistical method, and the estimation of precision was determined. From 1995–2002, the chestnut population in the study area increased by 18.5% due to new orchard plantations. After 2002 the population decreased because the new plantations were not sufficient to recover the number of dead chestnut trees, killed mostly by ink disease. The directional semivariograms indicated anisotropy with a greater disease spread in the NE–SW direction. This direction corresponds to site areas at the same altitude, where soil tillage and human mobility are higher
