Barriers to positive mental health in a young offenders institution: A qualitative study
Objective: To explore the barriers to positive mental health in a group of young offenders.
Design A qualitative approach was used to provide insight into the ways in which mental health for young offenders is experienced and managed. Setting A Young Offenders Institute (YOI) accommodating males aged between 18 and 21 years.
Method: Participants were recruited voluntarily using posters. Twelve offenders participated in focus groups and an additional three interviews were carried out with individuals who felt uncomfortable in the focus group situation.
Results: Participants stressed that feelings in a YOI could not be shared due to the masculine ethos that had been created on the wings. Listener services were reported to be ineffective for support because using them would show weakness and vulnerability to other prisoners. Visiting time was the main highlight in the routine for most young offenders; however, leaving family and friends was difficult. In dealing with these emotions young offenders would use coping mechanisms, including acts of aggression to vent built-up frustrations. The issue of prison staff and their effect on mental health was raised by all offenders involved in the research. Unanimously, it was suggested that there are both excellent prison officers who engage with the prisoners, and staff who abuse their power and treat prisoners disrespectfully.
Conclusion: Promoting mental health is not the principle business of a YOI. However, this research has generated some issues for consideration for governors and those working within this setting
Electrochemical synthesis of ammonia from N2 and H2O based on (Li,Na,K)2CO3-Ce0.8Gd 0.18Ca0.02O2-δ composite electrolyte and CoFe2O4 cathode
Electrochemical synthesis of ammonia from water vapour and nitrogen was investigated using an electrolytic cell based on CoFe2O 4-Ce0.8Gd0.18Ca0.02O 2-δ (CFO-CGDC), CGDC-ternary carbonate composite and Sm 0.5Sr0.5CoO3-δ-Ce0.8Gd 0.18Ca0.02O2-δ (SSCo-CGDC) as cathode, electrolyte and anode respectively. CoFe2O4, CGDC and SCCo were prepared via a combined EDTA-citrate complexing sol-gel and characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The AC ionic conductivities of the CGDC-carbonate composite were investigated under three different atmospheres (air, dry O 2 and wet 5% H2-Ar). A tri-layer electrolytic cell was fabricated by a cost-effective one-step dry-pressing and co-firing process. Ammonia was successfully synthesised from water vapour and nitrogen under atmospheric pressure and the maximum rate of ammonia production was found to be 6.5 × 10-11 mol s-1 cm-2 at 400 C and 1.6 V which is two orders of magnitude higher than that of previous report when ammonia was synthesised from N2 and H2O at 650 C
Outsourcing with debt financing
This paper investigates the effect of capital structure on a firm’s choice between vertical integration and outsourcing. We model the production decision in a Principal-Agent framework and show that suppliers use debt as a strategic instrument to collect the surplus from outsourcing as their wealth constraint or limited liability ensures them more attractive compensation schemes. Investigating the buyer’s capital structure, we find that outsourcing with risky debt is more likely to occur for high values of the outsourcing surplus.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
External sources of clean technology: evidence from the clean development mechanism
New technology is fundamental to sustainable development. However, inventors from industrialized countries often refuse technology transfer because they worry about reverse-engineering. When can clean technology transfer succeed? We develop a formal model of the political economy of North–South technology transfer. According to the model, technology transfer is possible if (1) the technology in focus has limited global commercial potential or (2) the host developing country does not have the capacity to absorb new technologies for commercial use. If both conditions fail, inventors from industrialized countries worry about the adverse competitiveness effects of reverse-engineering, so technology transfer fails. Data analysis of technology transfer in 4,894 projects implemented under the Kyoto Protocol’s Clean Development Mechanism during the 2004–2010 period provides evidence in support of the model
The flavor puzzle in multi-Higgs models
We reconsider the flavor problem in the models with two Higgs doublets. By
studying two generation toy models, we look for flavor basis independent
constraints on Yukawa couplings that will give us the mass hierarchy while
keeping all Yukawa couplings of the same order. We then generalize our findings
to the full three generation Standard Model. We find that we need two
constraints on the Yukawa couplings to generate the observed mass hierarchy,
and a slight tuning of Yukawa couplings of order 10%, much less than the
Standard Model. We briefly study how these constraints can be realized, and
show how flavor changing currents are under control for mixing in

Brief Report: AIP Mutation in Pituitary Adenomas in the 18th Century and Today

before epiphyseal fusion. In 1909, when Harvey Cushing examined the skeleton of
an Irish patient who lived from 1761 to 1783,1-3 he noted an enlarged pituitary
fossa. We extracted DNA from the patient’s teeth and identified a germline mutation
in the aryl hydrocarbon–interacting protein gene (AIP). Four contemporary
Northern Irish families who presented with gigantism, acromegaly, or prolactinoma
have the same mutation and haplotype associated with the mutated gene. Using
coalescent theory, we infer that these persons share a common ancestor who lived
about 57 to 66 generations earlier
Group Incentives and Rational Voting
Our model describes competition between groups driven by the choices of
self-interested voters within groups. Within a Poisson voting environment,
parties observe aggregate support from groups and can allocate prizes or
punishments to them. In a tournament style analysis, the model characterizes
how contingent allocation of prizes based on relative levels of support affects
equilibrium voting behavior. In addition to standard notions of pivotality,
voters influence the distribution of prizes across groups. Such prize
pivotality supports positive voter turnout even in non-competitive electoral
settings. The analysis shows that competition for a prize awarded to the most
supportive group is only stable when two groups actively support a party.
However, competition among groups to avoid punishment is stable in environments
with any number of groups. We conclude by examining implications for endogenous
group formation and how politicians structure the allocation of rewards and

Trade in ideas: outsourcing and knowledge spillovers
Inspired by the theory of variety-expanding product innovation we derive a testable relationship of outsourcing on the growth rate of knowledge. We estimate this relationship with a firm-level dataset, which is a unique match of PATSTAT patent data and theAmadeus dataset. We find evidence that forward spillovers are stronger than backward spillovers, where forward spillovers are defined as spillovers going down the value chain from producers to users of intermediate inputs. Moreover, we conclude that interindustry spillovers are stronger than intra-industry spillovers. This holds when considering only the more important forward spillovers as well as when considering both directions of knowledge flow
After the sunset: the residual effect of temporary legislation
The difference between permanent legislation and temporary legislation is the default rule of termination: permanent legislation governs perpetually, while temporary legislation governs for a limited time. Recent literature on legislative timing rules considers the effect of temporary legislation to stop at the moment of expiration. When the law expires, so does its regulatory effect. This article extends that literature by examining the effect of temporary legislation beyond its expiration. We show that in addition to affecting compliance behavior which depends on statutory enforcement, temporary legislation also affects compliance behavior which does not depend on statutory enforcement, and more generally, organizational behavior after a sunset. When temporary legislation expires therefore, it can continue to administer regulatory and other effects. We specify the conditions for this process and give the optimal legislative response
How Does Socioeconomic Development Affect COPD Mortality? An Age-Period-Cohort Analysis from a Recently Transitioned Population in China
Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a leading cause of death, particularly in developing countries. Little is known about the effects of economic development on COPD mortality, although economic development may potentially have positive and negative influences over the life course on COPD. We took advantage of a unique population whose rapid and recent economic development is marked by changes at clearly delineated and identifiable time points, and where few women smoke, to examine the effect of macro-level events on COPD mortality. Methods: We used Poisson regression to decompose sex-specific COPD mortality rates in Hong Kong from 1981 to 2005 into the effects of age, period and cohort. Results: COPD mortality declined strongly over generations for people born from the early to mid 20th century, which was particularly evident for the first generation to grow up in a more economically developed environment for both sexes. Population wide COPD mortality decreased when air quality improved and increased with increasing air pollution. COPD mortality increased with age, particularly after menopause among women. Conclusions: Economic development may reduce vulnerability to COPD by reducing long-lasting insults to the respiratory system, such as infections, poor nutrition and indoor air pollution.
