Determination of the geographical origin of green coffee beans using NIR spectroscopy and multivariate data analysis

    Get PDF
In this work, near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy and multivariate data analysis were investigated as a fast and non disruptive method to classify green coffee beans on continents and countries bases. FT-NIR spectra of 191 coffee samples, origin from 2 continents and 9 countries, were acquired by two different laboratories. Laboratory-independent Partial Least Square-Discriminant Analysis and interval PIS-DA models were developed by following a hierarchical approach, i.e. considering at first the continent and then the country of origin as discrimination rule. The best continent-based classification model was able to identify correctly more than 98% in prediction, whereas 100% of them were correctly predicted by the best country-based classification model. The inter-laboratory reliability of the proposed method was confirmed by McNemar test, since no significant differences (P > 0.05) were found. Furthermore, a validation was performed predicting the spectral test set of a laboratory using the model developed by the other one

Time, Money, or Knowledge: What factors are associated with implementing youth cooking programs?

    Get PDF
Research suggests participating in youth hands-on cooking programs, like those offered by Extension and 4-H, can improve nutrition behaviors and reduce the risk for obesity. We surveyed [STATE] Extension professionals (n = 127) to explore factors (e.g., employee characteristics, resources, county demographics) related to offering youth hands-on cooking programs and curricula used. Over 2/3 of participants offer programs and reported creating their own curriculum. More years of experience, having received Extension Specialist training, and increased confidence were positively related to offering these programs. Results suggest training could increase confidence and program implementation and standard curricula may be needed

The Euler-Maruyama approximation for the absorption time of the CEV diffusion

A standard convergence analysis of the simulation schemes for the hitting times of diffusions typically requires non-degeneracy of their coefficients on the boundary, which excludes the possibility of absorption. In this paper we consider the CEV diffusion from the mathematical finance and show how a weakly consistent approximation for the absorption time can be constructed, using the Euler-Maruyama scheme

IL-12-dependent innate immunity arrests endothelial cells in G0-G1 phase by a p21(Cip1/Waf1)-mediated mechanism.

Innate immunity may activate paracrine circuits able to entail vascular system in the onset and progression of several chronic degenerative diseases. In particular, interleukin (IL)-12 triggers a genetic program in lymphomononuclear cells characterized by the production of interferon-γ and specific chemokines resulting in an angiostatic activity. The aim of this study is to identify molecules involved in the regulation of cell cycle in endothelial cells co-cultured with IL-12-stimulated lymphomonuclear cells. By using a transwell mediated co-culture system we demonstrated that IL-12-stimulated lymphomonuclear cells induce an arrest of endothelial cells cycle in G1, which is mainly mediated by the up-regulation of p21(Cip1/Waf1), an inhibitor of cyclin kinases. This effect requires the activation of STAT1, PKCδ and p38 MAPK, while p53 is ineffective. In accordance, siRNA-dependent silencing of these molecules in endothelial cells inhibited the increase of p21(Cip1/Waf1) and the modification in cell cycle promoted by IL-12-stimulated lymphomonuclear cells. These results indicate that the angiostatic action of IL-12-stimulated lymphomononuclear cells may lie in the capability to arrest endothelial cells in G1 phase through a mechanisms mainly based on the specific up-regulation of p21(Cip1/Waf1) induced by the combined activity of STAT1, PKCδ and p38 MAPK
