Preparing Tomorrow’s World Language Teacher Today: The Case for Seamless Induction

    Get PDF
This essay is a call to action. It offers a comprehensive overview of the challenges facing world language (WL) teacher educators and their employers, the K-12 schools, during the teacher induction period. We propose a new paradigm for WL teacher education based on national accreditation standards, best-practice pedagogy, insights from the professional literature on methods education, and the enhanced role of the methods instructor/supervisor. In order to become successful in the classroom, the pre-service educator undergoes a seamless period of induction that is student-centered and college/university-supported beyond the classroom arena

Professional Educational Offer And Its Impact On The Labour Market

The fact that in México a large part of the population has access to higher education institutions, both public and private, does not indicate that the students are going to have the opportunity of developing the knowledge acquired in the university. Unemployment is often present; therefore their hopes to get a better life are diminished. Nowadays, students have a college degree, but they do not have any place to work. What is worse is that they cannot go back to their place of origin, because they are not accustomed to the former life or any other profession that they would have probably exercised if they had not lived in the city, causing underemployment. The higher education system in Puebla shows a high efficiency to cover the requirements of skilled labour of the economy, but it is not its duty to improve the performance of the economic and political institutions in order to reach an efficient and dynamic economy. It is worth mentioning that urgent actions are required to improve social conditions, as part of an integral strategy, which will allow the Mexican economy to increase the competitiveness of the companies, and thus achieve a greater job demand

Land Management Strategies and their Implications for Mazahua Farmers’ Livelihoods in the Highlands of Central Mexico

Environmental degradation, particularly of land resources, is one of the most important problems affecting farming highlands, due to steep slopes, high vulnerability and suggested over-exploitation of scarce natural resources (Blaikie & Brookfield 1987, Becerra 1998, Amsalu 2006, Amsalu & DeGraff 2006). Therefore, highlands are a primary target of conservation measures because of the perceived relationship between cultivation practices, poverty and land degradation (Lestrelin & Giordano 2007).This paper presents a case study from a Mazahua indigenous community in the rural Highlands of Central Mexico. It analyses Mazahua farming livelihoods characterised by subsistence agriculture, marginality, poverty and severe land degradation. Mazahua farmers face constrained environmental, socioeconomic and cultural conditions, which influence their local decisions on natural resource management. The results describe the capital assets base used, where land, livestock and crop production are imperative assets to support farmers’ livelihood strategies. It analyses local management practices to achieve livelihood outcomes in the short/ long term, and to improve or undermine land characteristics and other related assets. It also presents a farmer typology constructed by local perceptions, a controversial element to drive sustainable development strategies at the local level. Finally, it discusses how local land management practices are adopted and their importance in developing alternatives to encourage positive trade-offs between conservation and production in order to improve rural livelihoodsPROMEP- SEP Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Méxic

The loss of organic carbon stocks from the soil and their expulsion into the atmosphere due to the effect of anthropogenic activities must be understood as a problem that goes beyond the environmental to the social and economic context, with the soil degradation being just one of its many impacts. While the accumulation of carbon in the soil depends naturally on the interaction among a series of biotic and abiotic factors, management practices often cause the deterioration of its physical, chemical and biological properties, and, thus, increase the levels of mineralization and a reduction in carbon stocks. This study was undertaken in the municipality of San José del Rincón, State of Mexico, in volcanic soils under different conditions of land use and handling time periods. Samples were obtained at 11 plots, on which physical and chemical analyses were undertaken, obtaining soil organic carbon stocks at 20 cm top soil. The results indicated that, for the soils used for agriculture and induced pasture, there were significant increases in the bulk density, greater acidity and a decrease in carbon concentration compared to forest soils. The organic carbon stocks taken from soils used in forestry, agriculture and induced pasture at a depth of 20 cm were 131, 53 and 63 Mg C ha-1 respectively, results which suggest that the timing and intensity of management are determinants in the loss of soil organic carbon stocks from the soil, as well as the alteration of some of their physical and chemical properties.Proyecto PROMEP DSA/103.5/15/718

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is efficacious to treat depression, however more research is needed to understand its functions among Latinxs. This study analyzed qualitative responses that were paired with a mood rating (1–9 scale) from daily ecological momentary assessments via text-messaging of 52 low-income, Spanish-speaking patients to assess the relationship between word use and changes in mood during group CBT. Based on previous research, we chose 11 linguistic dimensions from the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count text analysis software that conceptually related to core CBT treatment elements and sociocultural factors of depression in Latinxs. Results showed that the use of words from the categories of Friends, Religion, Positive Emotions, and Leisure (proxy for behavioral activation) were significantly associated with a significant increase in mood. The use of Negative Emotions and Health words were significantly associated with a significant decrease in mood. Post-hoc analysis revealed that Certainty (proxy for cognitive inflexibility) words were related to a significant decrease in mood when Negative Emotional words were present. Findings contribute to our understanding of the role of sociocultural factors and core CBT elements in changes in mood among Latinxs. Lastly, this paper demonstrates the potential for analyzing language content during a digital health intervention to better understand user experiences.Fil: Hernandez Ramos, Rosa.
