Smectic ordering in liquid crystal - aerosil dispersions I. X-ray scattering

Comprehensive x-ray scattering studies have characterized the smectic ordering of octylcyanobiphenyl (8CB) confined in the hydrogen-bonded silica gels formed by aerosil dispersions. For all densities of aerosil and all measurement temperatures, the correlations remain short range, demonstrating that the disorder imposed by the gels destroys the nematic (N) to smectic-A (SmA) transition. The smectic correlation function contains two distinct contributions. The first has a form identical to that describing the critical thermal fluctuations in pure 8CB near the N-SmA transition, and this term displays a temperature dependence at high temperatures similar to that of the pure liquid crystal. The second term, which is negligible at high temperatures but dominates at low temperatures, has a shape given by the thermal term squared and describes the static fluctuations due to random fields induced by confinement in the gel. The correlation lengths appearing in the thermal and disorder terms are the same and show strong variation with gel density at low temperatures. The temperature dependence of the amplitude of the static fluctuations further suggests that nematic susceptibility become suppressed with increasing quenched disorder. The results overall are well described by a mapping of the liquid crystal-aerosil system into a three dimensional XY model in a random field with disorder strength varying linearly with the aerosil density.Comment: 14 pages, 13 figure

Objective: to analyze and summarize knowledge concerning critical components of interventions that have been proposed and implemented by nurses with the aim of optimizing self-care by heart failure patients. Methods: PubMed and CINAHL were the electronic databases used to search full peer-reviewed papers, presenting descriptions of nursing interventions directed to patients or to patients and their families and designed to optimize self-care. Forty-two studies were included in the final sample (n=4,799 patients). Results: this review pointed to a variety and complexity of nursing interventions. As self-care encompasses several behaviors, interventions targeted an average of 3.6 behaviors. Educational/counselling activities were combined or not with cognitive behavioral strategies, but only about half of the studies used a theoretical background to guide interventions. Clinical assessment and management were frequently associated with self-care interventions, which varied in number of sessions (1 to 30); length of follow-up (2 weeks to 12 months) and endpoints. Conclusions: these findings may be useful to inform nurses about further research in self-care interventions in order to propose the comparison of different modalities of intervention, the use of theoretical background and the establishment of endpoints to evaluate their effectiveness. Road traffic noise and children's inattention

BACKGROUND: An increasing number of children are exposed to road traffic noise levels that may lead to adverse effects on health and daily functioning. Childhood is a period of intense growth and brain maturation, and children may therefore be especially vulnerable to road traffic noise. The objective of the present study was to examine whether road traffic noise was associated with reported inattention symptoms in children, and whether this association was mediated by sleep duration. METHODS: This study was based on the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study conducted by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. Parental reports of children's inattention at age 8 were linked to modelled levels of residential road traffic noise. We investigated the association between inattention and noise exposure during pregnancy (n = 1934), noise exposure averaged over 5 years (age 3 to 8 years; n = 1384) and noise exposure at age 8 years (n = 1384), using fractional logit response models. The participants were children from Oslo, Norway. RESULTS: An association with inattention at age 8 years was found for road traffic noise exposure at age 8 years (coef = .0083, CI = [.0012, .0154]; 1.2% point increase in inattention score per 10 dB increase in noise level), road traffic noise exposure average for the last 5 years (coef = .0090, CI = [.0016, .0164]; 1.3% point increase/10 dB), and for pregnancy road traffic noise exposure for boys (coef = .0091, CI = [.0010, .0171]), but not girls (coef = -.0021, CI = [-.0094, .0053]). Criteria for doing mediation analyses were not fulfilled. CONCLUSION: Results indicate that road traffic noise has a negative impact on children's inattention. We found no mediation by sleep duration

Supramolecular Organization and Magnetic Properties of Mesogen-Hybridized Mixed-Valent Manganese Single Molecule Magnets (Mn8Mn4O12)-Mn-III-O-IV(L-x,L-y,L-z-CB)(16)(H2O)(4)

Single molecule magnets (SMM) may be considered for the construction of future integrated nano-devices, provided however that some degree of ordering is imparted to these molecules (surfaces nanostructuration). Combining such nanoobjects with liquid-crystalline orderings to control their assembly and to potentially address them individually therefore appears as one promising strategy. Four mesomorphic, mixed-valent [(Mn8Mn4O12)-Mn-III-O-IV(L-x,L-y,L-z-CB)(16)(H2O)(4)] SMM, differing in the number of liquid-crystalline promoters, (L-x,L-y,L-z-CB), were synthesized, and their self-organizing and magnetic properties were investigated. The influence of the peripheral modifications, and precisely how supramolecular ordering and magnetic properties may be affected by the evolution of the proto-mesogenic cyanobiphenyl-based ligands substitution pattern, was explored. Small-angle X-ray scattering studies revealed that all of the hybridized clusters self-organize into room-temperature bilayer smectic phases, mandated by the specific mesogenic functionalization and that the polymetallic cores are further organized according to a short-range pseudo-2D lattice with hexagonal and/or square symmetry. All mesomorphous hybridized dodecamanganese complexes still behave as SMM: they exhibit blocking of the magnetization at about 2.6 K as evidenced by the occurrence of frequency-dependent out-of-phase ac susceptibility signals as well as an opening of the hysteresis cycle with coercive fields varying between 0.13 and 0.6 T, depending on the surface ligands topology. Comparison of the magnetic properties within this series reveals intricate correlations between the structural features of the mesomorphous molecule magnet (i.e., symmetry of the ligands substitution patterns, molecular conformation, average intercluster distances, and respective inclination) with respect to the relative proportion of slow- and fast-relaxing species and the absolute values of the coercive fields

Universal Coping Power for pre-schoolers: Effects on children's behavioral difficulties and pre-academic skills

The Coping Power Program has been adapted as a universal prevention model (Coping Power Universal) aimed to reduce children's behavioral difficulties in Italian primary and nursery classes. The current study aimed to determine whether the version of the Universal Coping Power for pre-schoolers could reduce behavioral problems in school and home contexts, and could produce transfer effects on children's pre-academic skills. The sample included 102 five-year-old children who attended six pre-school classes located in Rovigo (Italy). Classes were randomly assigned to the intervention or to the control condition. Both parents and teachers indicated a significant reduction in behavioral problems for Coping Power classes, and teachers rated improvement in children's pre-mathematics, and language abilities. The results of this study are promising, suggesting pre-schoolers' social-emotional and pre-academic skills may benefit from the Universal Coping Power program
