    Lithium isotopes in speleothems: temperature-controlled variation in silicate weathering during glacial cycles

    Terrestrial chemical weathering of silicate minerals is a fundamental component of the global cycle of carbon and other elements. Past changes in temperature, rainfall, ice cover, sea-level and physical erosion are thought to affect weathering but the relative impact of these controls through time remains poorly constrained. This problem could be addressed if the nature of past weathering could be constrained at individual sites. In this study, we investigate the use of speleothems as local recorders of the silicate weathering proxy, Li isotopes. We analysed 7Li and [Li] in speleothems that formed during the past 200 ka in two well-studied Israeli caves (Soreq and Tzavoa), as well as in the overlying soils and rocks. Leaching and mass balance of these soils and rocks show that Li is dominantly sourced from weathering of the overlying aeolian silicate soils. Speleothem 7Li values are ubiquitously higher during glacials (~23‰) than during interglacials (~10‰), implying more congruent silicate weathering during interglacials (where “congruent” means a high ratio of primary mineral dissolution to secondary mineral formation). These records provide information on the processes controlling weathering in Israel. Consideration of possible processes causing this change of weathering congruency indicates a primary role for temperature, with higher temperatures causing more congruent weathering (lower 7Lispeleo). The strong relationship observed between speleothem d7Li and climate at these locations suggests that Li isotopes may be a powerful tool with which to understand the local controls on weathering at other sites, and could be used to assess the distribution of weathering changes accompanying climate change, such as that of Pleistocene glacial cycles

    Effects of early intracoronary streptokinase on infarct size estimated from cumulative enzyme release and on enzyme release rate: A randomized trial of 533 patients with acute myocardial infarction

    The effects of early intracoronary streptokinase (SK) on enzymatic infarct size and rate of enzyme release were studied in a randomized multicenter trial. A total of 533 patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) were allocated to either the SK treatment group (n = 269) or the conventional (control) treatment group (n = 264). Enzymatic infarct size was represented by the cumulative quantity of alpha-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase (HBDH) released by the heart per liter of plasma in the first 72 hours. Rate of enzyme release was represented by the ratio of HBDH quantities released in 24 hours and 72 hours. On an "intention to treat" basis, the SK group had a smaller (by 30%; p = 0.0001) median enzymatic infarct size and a higher (by 35%; p = 0.0001) median rate of enzyme release than the control group.     Loss of Endothelial Glycocalyx During Normothermic Machine Perfusion of Porcine Kidneys Irrespective of Pressure and Hematocrit

    BACKGROUND: Normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) is a promising modality for marginal donor kidneys. However, little is known about the effects of NMP on causing endothelial glycocalyx (eGC) injury. This study aims to evaluate the effects of NMP on eGC injury in marginal donor kidneys and whether this is affected by perfusion pressures and hematocrits.METHODS: Porcine slaughterhouse kidneys (n = 6/group) underwent 35 min of warm ischemia. Thereafter, the kidneys were preserved with oxygenated hypothermic machine perfusion for 3 h. Subsequently, 4 h of NMP was applied using pressure-controlled perfusion with an autologous blood-based solution containing either 12%, 24%, or 36% hematocrit. Pressures of 55, 75, and 95 mm Hg were applied in the 24% group. Perfusate, urine, and biopsy samples were collected to determine both injury and functional parameters.RESULTS: During NMP, hyaluronan levels in the perfusate increased significantly ( P &lt; 0.0001). In addition, the positivity of glyco-stained glycocalyx decreased significantly over time, both in the glomeruli ( P = 0.024) and peritubular capillaries ( P = 0.003). The number of endothelial cells did not change during NMP ( P = 0.157), whereas glomerular endothelial expression of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 decreased significantly ( P &lt; 0.001). Microthrombi formation was significantly increased after NMP. The use of different pressures and hematocrits did not affect functional parameters during perfusion. CONCLUSIONS: NMP is accompanied with eGC and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 loss, without significant loss of endothelial cells. eGC loss was not affected by the different pressures and hematocrits used. It remains unclear whether endothelial injury during NMP has harmful consequences for the transplanted kidney.</p

    Possible origins of macroscopic left-right asymmetry in organisms

    I consider the microscopic mechanisms by which a particular left-right (L/R) asymmetry is generated at the organism level from the microscopic handedness of cytoskeletal molecules. In light of a fundamental symmetry principle, the typical pattern-formation mechanisms of diffusion plus regulation cannot implement the "right-hand rule"; at the microscopic level, the cell's cytoskeleton of chiral filaments seems always to be involved, usually in collective states driven by polymerization forces or molecular motors. It seems particularly easy for handedness to emerge in a shear or rotation in the background of an effectively two-dimensional system, such as the cell membrane or a layer of cells, as this requires no pre-existing axis apart from the layer normal. I detail a scenario involving actin/myosin layers in snails and in C. elegans, and also one about the microtubule layer in plant cells.     Thrombolysis with tissue plasminogen activator in acute myocardial infarction: no additional benefit from immediate percutaneous coronary angioplasty

    A randomised trial of 367 patients with acute myocardial infarction was performed to determine whether an invasive strategy combining thrombolysis with recombinant tissue-type plasminogen activator (rTPA), heparin, and acetylsalicylic acid, and immediate percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) would be superior to a noninvasive strategy with the same medical treatment but without immediate angiography and PTCA. Intravenous infusion of 100 mg rTPA was started within 5 h after onset of symptoms (median 156 min). Angiography was performed 6-165 min later in 180 out of 183 patients allocated to the invasive strategy; 184 patients were allocated to the non-invasive strategy.     Magnetic Field Amplification in Galaxy Clusters and its Simulation

    We review the present theoretical and numerical understanding of magnetic field amplification in cosmic large-scale structure, on length scales of galaxy clusters and beyond. Structure formation drives compression and turbulence, which amplify tiny magnetic seed fields to the microGauss values that are observed in the intracluster medium. This process is intimately connected to the properties of turbulence and the microphysics of the intra-cluster medium. Additional roles are played by merger induced shocks that sweep through the intra-cluster medium and motions induced by sloshing cool cores. The accurate simulation of magnetic field amplification in clusters still poses a serious challenge for simulations of cosmological structure formation. We review the current literature on cosmological simulations that include magnetic fields and outline theoretical as well as numerical challenges.Comment: 60 pages, 19 Figure

    A measurement of the tau mass and the first CPT test with tau leptons

    We measure the mass of the tau lepton to be 1775.1+-1.6(stat)+-1.0(syst.) MeV using tau pairs from Z0 decays. To test CPT invariance we compare the masses of the positively and negatively charged tau leptons.     Measurement of the B0 Lifetime and Oscillation Frequency using B0->D*+l-v decays

    The lifetime and oscillation frequency of the B0 meson has been measured using B0->D*+l-v decays recorded on the Z0 peak with the OPAL detector at LEP. The D*+ -> D0pi+ decays were reconstructed using an inclusive technique and the production flavour of the B0 mesons was determined using a combination of tags from the rest of the event. The results t_B0 = 1.541 +- 0.028 +- 0.023 ps, Dm_d = 0.497 +- 0.024 +- 0.025 ps-1 were obtained, where in each case the first error is statistical and the second systematic.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys.     First Measurement of Z/gamma* Production in Compton Scattering of Quasi-real Photons

    We report the first observation of Z/gamma* production in Compton scattering of quasi-real photons. This is a subprocess of the reaction e+e- to e+e-Z/gamma*, where one of the final state electrons is undetected. Approximately 55 pb-1 of data collected in the year 1997 at an e+e- centre-of-mass energy of 183 GeV with the OPAL detector at LEP have been analysed. The Z/gamma* from Compton scattering has been detected in the hadronic decay channel. Within well defined kinematic bounds, we measure the product of cross-section and Z/gamma* branching ratio to hadrons to be (0.9+-0.3+-0.1) pb for events with a hadronic mass larger than 60 GeV, dominated by (e)eZ production. In the hadronic mass region between 5 GeV and 60 GeV, dominated by (e)egamma* production, this product is found to be (4.1+-1.6+-0.6) pb.
