Adapting Real Quantifier Elimination Methods for Conflict Set Computation

    Get PDF
The satisfiability problem in real closed fields is decidable. In the context of satisfiability modulo theories, the problem restricted to conjunctive sets of literals, that is, sets of polynomial constraints, is of particular importance. One of the central problems is the computation of good explanations of the unsatisfiability of such sets, i.e.\ obtaining a small subset of the input constraints whose conjunction is already unsatisfiable. We adapt two commonly used real quantifier elimination methods, cylindrical algebraic decomposition and virtual substitution, to provide such conflict sets and demonstrate the performance of our method in practice

Strange Particles in Dense Matter and Kaon Condensates

We discuss the role of strangeness in dense matter and especially in neutron stars. The early (in density) introduction of hyperons found in many calculations is probably delayed by the decrease in vector mean field acting on the neutron. The decrease results from both conventional many-body rescattering effects and from the movement towards asymptotic freedom at high densities. Subthreshold KK^--meson production by the KaoS collaboration at GSI shows that the KK^--mass must be substantially lowered, by \gtrsim 200 MeV at ρ2ρ0\rho\sim 2\rho_0. It is shown that explicit chiral symmetry breaking through the kaon mass may be responsible for Σ\Sigma^--nucleon and Ξ\Xi^--nucleon scalar attraction being weaker than obtained by simple quark scaling. The normal mode of the strangeness minus, charge ee^-, excitation is constructed as a linear combination of KK^--meson and Σ\Sigma^-, neutron-hole state. Except for zero momentum, where the terms are unmixed the "kaesobar" is a linear combination of these two components.Comment: 10 pages, 8 postscript figures, Talk given at the International Conference on Hypernuclear and Strange Particle Physics (HYP97), Brookhaven Nat'l Lab., USA, October 13-18, 1997, to be published in Nucl. From Kaon-Nuclear Interactions to Kaon Condensation

An effective chiral Lagrangian in heavy-fermion formalism whose parameters are constrained by kaon-nucleon and kaon-nuclear interactions next to the leading order in chiral expansion is used to describe kaon condensation in dense ``neutron star" matter. The critical density is found to be robust with respect to the parameters of the chiral Lagrangian and comes out to be ρc(34)ρ0\rho_c\sim (3 - 4)\rho_0. Once kaon condensation sets in, the system is no longer composed of neutron matter but of nuclear matter. Possible consequences on stellar collapse with the formation of compact ``nuclear stars" or light-mass black holes are pointed out.Comment: 20 pages, LaTeX, NORDITA-93/30 N, SUNY-NTG-93-

Andreev reflections in the pseudogap state of cuprate supercondcutors

We propose that, if the pseudogap state in the cuprate superconductors can be described in terms of the phase-incoherent preformed pairs, there should exist Andreev reflection from these pairs even above the superconducting transition temperature, TcT_c. After giving qualitative arguments for this effect, we present more quantitative calculations based on the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equation. Experimental observations of the effects of Andreev reflections above TcT_c---such as an enhanced tunneling conductance below the gap along the copper oxide plane---could provide unambiguous evidence for the preformed pairs in the pseudogap state.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur

Antikaon condensation and the metastability of protoneutron stars

We investigate the condensation of Kˉ0\bar K^0 meson along with KK^- condensation in the neutrino trapped matter with and without hyperons. Calculations are performed in the relativistic mean field models in which both the baryon-baryon and (anti)kaon-baryon interactions are mediated by meson exchange. In the neutrino trapped matter relevant to protoneutron stars, the critical density of KK^- condensation is shifted considerably to higher density whereas that of Kˉ0\bar K^0 condensation is shifted slightly to higher density with respect to that of the neutrino free case. The onset of KK^- condensation always occurs earlier than that of Kˉ0\bar K^0 condensation. A significant region of maximum mass protoneutron stars is found to contain Kˉ0\bar K^0 condensate for larger values of the antikaon potential. With the appearance of Kˉ0\bar K^0 condensation, there is a region of symmetric nuclear matter in the inner core of a protoneutron star. It is found that the maximum mass of a protoneutron star containing KK^- and Kˉ0\bar K^0 condensate is greater than that of the corresponding neutron star. We revisit the implication of this scenario in the context of the metastability of protoneutron stars and their evolution to low mass black holes.Comment: 26 pages; Revtex; 8 figures include

Insurance as a business activity must fulfill principles of insurance law. One of the principles that must be hold on is the principle of  utmost good faith. The principle says that an endured person must honestly give information of  what should be given responsibility to the guarantor. In Islamic business, honesty is a principle that should be respected. From point of  view of  law, the principle is settled in commerce law. The problem is that whether the principle is represenative enough if it is viewed from law of  syariah agreement. At glance, the principle has fulfilled the basic of syariah agreement, however, it does not have maximum criteria of  honesty. Unavailability of honesty in insurance business will give effect of  invalidate of  insurance agreement, for there is a deformity of desire (‘uyub ar-ridla).</p

Radio Bursts Associated with Flare and Ejecta in the 13 July 2004 Event

We investigate coronal transients associated with a GOES M6.7 class flare and a coronal mass ejection (CME) on 13 July 2004. During the rising phase of the flare, a filament eruption, loop expansion, a Moreton wave, and an ejecta were observed. An EIT wave was detected later on. The main features in the radio dynamic spectrum were a frequency-drifting continuum and two type II bursts. Our analysis shows that if the first type II burst was formed in the low corona, the burst heights and speed are close to the projected distances and speed of the Moreton wave (a chromospheric shock wave signature). The frequency-drifting radio continuum, starting above 1 GHz, was formed almost two minutes prior to any shock features becoming visible, and a fast-expanding piston (visible as the continuum) could have launched another shock wave. A possible scenario is that a flare blast overtook the earlier transient, and ignited the first type II burst. The second type II burst may have been formed by the same shock, but only if the shock was propagating at a constant speed. This interpretation also requires that the shock-producing regions were located at different parts of the propagating structure, or that the shock was passing through regions with highly different atmospheric densities. This complex event, with a multitude of radio features and transients at other wavelengths, presents evidence for both blast-wave-related and CME-related radio emissions.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures; Solar Physics Topical Issue, in pres

Formation of superdense hadronic matter in high energy heavy-ion collisions

We present the detail of a newly developed relativistic transport model (ART 1.0) for high energy heavy-ion collisions. Using this model, we first study the general collision dynamics between heavy ions at the AGS energies. We then show that in central collisions there exists a large volume of sufficiently long-lived superdense hadronic matter whose local baryon and energy densities exceed the critical densities for the hadronic matter to quark-gluon plasma transition. The size and lifetime of this matter are found to depend strongly on the equation of state. We also investigate the degree and time scale of thermalization as well as the radial flow during the expansion of the superdense hadronic matter. The flow velocity profile and the temperature of the hadronic matter at freeze-out are extracted. The transverse momentum and rapidity distributions of protons, pions and kaons calculated with and without the mean field are compared with each other and also with the preliminary data from the E866/E802 collaboration to search for experimental observables that are sensitive to the equation of state. It is found that these inclusive, single particle observables depend weakly on the equation of state. The difference between results obtained with and without the nuclear mean field is only about 20\%. The baryon transverse collective flow in the reaction plane is also analyzed. It is shown that both the flow parameter and the strength of the ``bounce-off'' effect are very sensitive to the equation of state. In particular, a soft equation of state with a compressibility of 200 MeV results in an increase of the flow parameter by a factor of 2.5 compared to the cascade case without the mean field. This large effect makes it possible to distinguish the predictions from different theoretical models and to detect the signaturesComment: 55 pages, latex, + 39 figures available upon reques
