    Estimation of body density in adolescent athletes

    National samples of 141 male and 133 female highly-trained adolescent athletes were studied to derive anthropometric-based equations predicting body density. Anthropometric measures included skinfold thicknesses at seven sites, circum- ferences at 14 sites, and diameters at nine sites. Criterion measures of body density were determined by underwater weighing with corrections for residual lung vol- ume based on the oxygen dilution method. Variable selection procedures included factor analysis followed by forward-stepping regression and polynomial analysis. For both the male and female samples, two quadratic equations utilizing either the sum of three or seven skinfold measures were derived. Within the male sample, high validity coefficients (R = 0.81 - 0.82) and low standard errors (SEE = 0.0055 - 0.0056 g-ml !) were shown with these equations. Similar results were demon- strated with the equations for females (R = 0.82 and SEE = 0.0060 g-ml~ l). Cross- validation on independent samples of male (n = 66) and female (n = 46) adolescent athletes further confirmed these findings. In the cross-validation sample of males, predicted scores were highly correlated with actual body density (r = 0.86 - 0.87) and the total error of prediction ranged from 0.0057 to 0.0061 g-ml~ l. Among the females, these values were r = 0.82 - 0.83 and total error = 0.0058 to 0.0063 g*ml-1. These results indicate that within reasonable limits of error, the sum of three or seven skinfolds may be used to make estimates of the body density of adolescent male or female athlete

    Exploring Complex Disease Gene Relationships Using Simultaneous Analysis

    The characterization of complex diseases remains a great challenge for biomedical researchers due to the myriad interactions of genetic and environmental factors. Adaptation of phylogenomic techniques to increasingly available genomic data provides an evolutionary perspective that may elucidate important unknown features of complex diseases. Here an automated method is presented that leverages publicly available genomic data and phylogenomic techniques. The approach is tested with nine genes implicated in the development of Alzheimer Disease, a complex neurodegenerative syndrome. The developed technique, which is an update to a previously described Perl script called “ASAP,” was implemented through a suite of Ruby scripts entitled “ASAP2,” first compiles a list of sequence-similarity based orthologues using PSI-BLAST and a recursive NCBI BLAST+ search strategy, then constructs maximum parsimony phylogenetic trees for each set of nucleotide and protein sequences, and calculates phylogenetic metrics (partitioned Bremer support values, combined branch scores, and Robinson-Foulds distance) to provide an empirical assessment of evolutionary conservation within a given genetic network. This study demonstrates the potential for using automated simultaneous phylogenetic analysis to uncover previously unknown relationships among disease-associated genes that may not have been apparent using traditional, single-gene methods. Furthermore, the results provide the first integrated evolutionary history of an Alzheimer Disease gene network and identify potentially important co-evolutionary clustering around components of oxidative stress pathways

    Local delivery of the KCa3.1 blocker, TRAM-34, prevents acute angioplasty-induced coronary smooth muscle phenotypic modulation and limits stenosis

    Objective-We previously demonstrated that upregulation of intermediate-conductance Ca2+ -activated K+ channels (KCa 3.1) is necessary for mitogen-induced phenotypic modulation in isolated porcine coronary smooth muscle cells (SMCs). The objective of the present study was to determine the role of KCa3.1 in the regulation of coronary SMC phenotypic modulation in vivo using a swine model of postangioplasty restenosis. Methods and Results-Balloon angioplasty was performed on coronary arteries of swine using either noncoated or balloons coated with the specific KCa3.1 blocker TRAM-34. Expression of KCa3.1, c-jun, c-fos, repressor element-1 silencing transcription factor (REST), smooth muscle myosin heavy chain (SMMHC), and myocardin was measured using qRT-PCR in isolated medial cells 2 hours and 2 days postangioplasty. KCa3.1, c-jun, and c-fos mRNA levels were increased 2 hours postangioplasty, whereas REST expression decreased. SMMHC expression was unchanged at 2 hours, but decreased 2 days postangioplasty. Use of TRAM-34 coated balloons prevented KCa3.1 upregulation and REST downregulation at 2 hours, SMMHC and myocardin downregulation at 2 days, and attenuated subsequent restenosis 14 and 28 days postangioplasty. Immunohistochemical analysis demonstrated corresponding changes at the protein level. Conclusion-Blockade of KCa3.1 by delivery of TRAM-34 via balloon catheter prevented smooth muscle phenotypic modulation and limited subsequent restenosis

    Just picking it up? Young children learning with technology at home

    We describe a two-year empirical investigation of three- and four-year-old children's uses of technology at home, based on a survey of 346 families and 24 case studies. Using a sociocultural approach, we discuss the range of technologies children encounter in the home, the different forms their learning takes, the roles of adults and other children, and how family practices support this learning. Many parents believed that they do not teach children how to use technology. We discuss parents' beliefs that their children 'pick up' their competences with technology and identify trial and error, copying and demonstration as typical modes of learning. Parents tend to consider that their children are mainly self-taught and underestimate their own role in supporting learning and the extent to which learning with technology is culturally transmitted within the family

    A Framework for Improving the Teaching of Mathematics to Bi/Multilingual Learners

    To teach mathematics well to bi/multilingual learners, we propose that mathematics teachers should consider the following five elements: know the content, know the language, know the learner, engage the community and assess meaningfully. This chapter defines each of these elements, explores how they are put into practice, and shares the responses of teachers who have participated in online professional development organized around each element. By approaching mathematics teaching with these elements in mind, teachers can more effectively support high levels of learning and achievement for bi/multilingual learners across levels of English proficiency and grade levels

    Health Coverage History of Local Uninsured PatientsAssessing the Need for an Eligibility Specialist

    Abstract: Uninsured Americans are a growing population as insurance premiums climb and fewer employers offer health coverage. Providing medical care to the uninsured often represents a significant financial loss to medical institutions. Our study sought to describe the insurance history and barriers to obtaining health coverage for uninsured patients at the Community Health Center of Burlington, Vermont (CHCB). The potential benefit of adding an insurance eligibility position to the staff at CHCB was also explored. Data were collected by random phone survey from 100 CHCB patients identified as uninsured at their last visit; patients were queried regarding insurance history and interest in enrollment assistance. At the time of survey 66% were currently uninsured, and the majority (87.9%) of these respondents previously held insurance. Loss of insurance was most often due to a change in job status, income or a change in eligibility. Cost was a major barrier to insurance noted by individuals; on average respondents indicated they would be willing to pay around $65 per month for overage. A majority (75.7%) of uninsured respondents also expressed interest in an onsite eligibility worker. These data suggest that the patient population at CHCB would be well served by implementing some form of eligibility staffing. There are a number of different health insurance options in Vermont that could benefit these patients, provided they have assistance with applying. Due to the small sample size of our survey, we recommend that the scope of the eligibility position be determined by closely examining the caseload encountered.https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/comphp_gallery/1025/thumbnail.jp

    Fabrication of periodic microstructures on flexible polyimide membranes

    Periodic metallic microstructures were fabricated on polyimide membranes. Techniques were developed to maintain flatness of the membrane during processing while still allowing for flexibility in the final structure. For proper functionality of the structures, it was necessary to first fabricate a continuous metallic film and a continuous dielectric layer on top of the flexible substrate, which underlaid the periodic microstructure. Flexibility of the overall structure was maintained by using a polymer as the dielectric layer, which was constrained to have high optical transmission over the infrared wavelength range of 6-14 mu m. Three candidate polymers were evaluated, and their measured optical properties are presented. Benzocyclobutene was found to be the best choice for this application. The final structure fully populated a 10 cm (4 in.) diameter flexible membrane with microstructures of excellent uniformity. (C) 2007 American Vacuum Society

    Mild place illusion: a virtual reality factor to spark creativity in writing

    Developments in Virtual Reality (VR) technology have modified the creative potential of each individual. We introduce a new con cept, called "mild place illusion", as a new paradigm for designing VR-based user interfaces targeted at stimulating creativity. We show that for creative tasks - such as creative writing, new product ideation, and brainstorming - a "just-enough" amount of place illu sion leads to a greater self-perception of creativity, as opposed to a "full-level" place illusion. This is a somewhat unexpected result since one would suppose, a priori, to have the full-level place illu sion as the optimal setup for stimulating creativity. We considered that the methodology in this work was fairly complex, but our re sults show – through a data triangulation approach – that we were able to identify more consistent and personal creative experiences. Therefore, the main contribution of this paper is a new paradigm for designing VR user interfaces targeted at stimulating creativity by showing that a “one-illusion interspace” leads to a greater self perception of creativity.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
