The large scale gas and dust distribution in the galaxy: Implications for star formation

    Get PDF
Infrared Astronomy Observations are presented for the diffuse infrared (IR) emissions from the galactic plane at wavelengths of 60 and 100 microns and the total far infrared intensity and its longitudinal variations in the disk were derived. Using available CO, 5 GHz radio-continuum, and HI data, the IR luminosity per hydrogen mass and the ingrared excess (IRE) ratio in the Galaxy were derived. The longitudinal profiles of the 60 and 100 micron emission were linearly decomposed into three components that are associated with molecular (H2), neutral (HI), and ionized (HII) phases in the interstellar medium (ISM), and the relevant dust properties were derived in each phase. Implications of the findings for various models of the diffuse IR emisison and for star formation in the galactic disk are discussed

Amorphization induced by pressure: results for zeolites and general implications

    Get PDF
We report an {\sl ab initio} study of pressure-induced amorphization (PIA) in zeolites, which are model systems for this phenomenon. We confirm the occurrence of low-density amorphous phases like the one reported by Greaves {\sl et al.} [Science {\bf 308}, 1299 (2005)], which preserves the crystalline topology and might constitute a new type of glass. The role of the zeolite composition regarding PIA is explained. Our results support the correctness of existing models for the basic PIA mechanim, but suggest that energetic, rather than kinetic, factors determine the irreversibility of the transition.Comment: 4 pages with 3 figures embedded. Origin of superconductivity in nominally "undoped" T'-La2x_{2-x}Yx_{x}CuO4_{4} films

We have systematically studied the transport properties of the La2x_{2-x}Yx_{x}CuO4_{4}(LYCO) films of T'-phase (0.05x0.300.05\leq x \leq 0.30). In this nominally "undoped" system, superconductivity was acquired in certain Y doping range (0.10x0.200.10\leq x \leq 0.20). Measurements of resistivity, Hall coefficients in normal states and resistive critical field (Hc2ρH^\rho_{c2})in superconducting states of the T'-LYCO films show the similar behavior as the known Ce-doped n-type cuprate superconductors, indicating the intrinsic electron-doping nature. The charge carriers are induced by oxygen deficiency. Non-superconducting Y-doped Pr- or Nd-based T'-phase cuprate films were also investigated for comparison, suggesting the crucial role of the radii of A-site cations in the origin of superconductivity in the nominally "undoped" cuptates. Based on a reasonable scenario in the microscopic reduction process, we put forward a self-consistent interpretation of these experimental observations.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figure

Afferent Convergence from Divergent Sources Appears to Enhance the Spastic Patient\u27s Ability to Inhibit Antagonist Motoneurons During an Agonist Contraction

    Get PDF
Spasticity and excessive muscular cocontraction during movement are common impairments following upper motor neuron (UMN) lesions. For example, during voluntary ankle dorsiflexion, individuals with spastic type cerebral palsy (CP) do not inhibit the antagonist triceps surae motoneuron pool

A Simple Family of Analytical Trumpet Slices of the Schwarzschild Spacetime

We describe a simple family of analytical coordinate systems for the Schwarzschild spacetime. The coordinates penetrate the horizon smoothly and are spatially isotropic. Spatial slices of constant coordinate time tt feature a trumpet geometry with an asymptotically cylindrical end inside the horizon at a prescribed areal radius R0R_0 (with 0<R0M0<R_{0}\leq M) that serves as the free parameter for the family. The slices also have an asymptotically flat end at spatial infinity. In the limit R0=0R_{0}=0 the spatial slices lose their trumpet geometry and become flat -- in this limit, our coordinates reduce to Painlev\'e-Gullstrand coordinates.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure
