The Geometry of Warped Product Singularities
In this article the degenerate warped products of singular semi-Riemannian
manifolds are studied. They were used recently by the author to handle
singularities occurring in General Relativity, in black holes and at the
big-bang. One main result presented here is that a degenerate warped product of
semi-regular semi-Riemannian manifolds with the warping function satisfying a
certain condition is a semi-regular semi-Riemannian manifold. The connection
and the Riemann curvature of the warped product are expressed in terms of those
of the factor manifolds. Examples of singular semi-Riemannian manifolds which
are semi-regular are constructed as warped products. Applications include
cosmological models and black holes solutions with semi-regular singularities.
Such singularities are compatible with a certain reformulation of the Einstein
equation, which in addition holds at semi-regular singularities too.Comment: 14 page
No-Core shell model for A = 47 and A = 49
We apply an {\it ab-initio} approach to the nuclear structure of odd-mass
nuclei straddling . Starting with the NN interaction, that fits
two-body scattering and bound state data we evaluate the nuclear properties of
and nuclei in a no-core approach. Due to model space
limitations and the absence of 3-body interactions, we incorporate
phenomenological terms determined by fits to nuclei in a previous
effort. Our modified Hamiltonian produces reasonable spectra for these odd mass
nuclei. In addition to the differences in single-particle basis states, the
absence of a single-particle Hamiltonian in our no-core approach obscures
direct comparisons with valence effective NN interactions. Nevertheless, we
compare the fp-shell matrix elements of our initial and modified Hamiltonians
in the harmonic oscillator basis with a recent model fp-shell interaction, the
GXPF1 interaction of Honma, Otsuka, Brown and Mizusaki. Notable differences
emerge from these comparisons. In particular, our diagonal two-body
matrix elements are, on average, about 800-900keV more attractive. Furthermore,
while our initial and modified NN Hamiltonian fp-shell matrix elements are
strongly correlated, there is much less correlation with the GXPF1 matrix

The Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker Big Bang singularities are well behaved
We show that the Big Bang singularity of the
Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker model does not raise major problems to
General Relativity. We prove a theorem showing that the Einstein equation can
be written in a non-singular form, which allows the extension of the spacetime
before the Big Bang. The physical interpretation of the fields used is
discussed. These results follow from our research on singular semi-Riemannian

Comment on 4D Lorentz invariance violations in the brane-world
The brane-world scenario offers the possibility for signals to travel outside
our visible universe and reenter it. We find the condition for a signal emitted
from the brane to return to the brane. We study the propagation of such signals
and show that, as seen by a 4D observer, these signals arrive earlier than
light traveling along the brane. We also study the horizon problem and find
that, while the bulk signals can travel far enough to homogenize the visible
universe, it is unlikely that they have a significant effect since they are

Feedback on Innovative Pedagogy for teaching Systems Modeling
International audienceThis paper presents a feedback on a new core course on "Systems modeling-Model representations and analysis" of the new curriculum of CentraleSupélec. Dedicated to all the first year students, this course stands as the main prerequisite for an important part of the curriculum. Thus its fruition is essential. Multiple challenges have been overcome: (i) propose a high level academic program for more than 800 engineering students with initial heterogeneous levels in systems modeling; (ii) make the course easy-understandable and attractive for students, while allowing interactions students-to-students and students-to-professors; (iii) guarantee the consistency with the entire curriculum; (iv) manage the time constraints imposed by the course schedule
The impact of an educational program in the management of patients with chronic hepatitis C
Introduction: This study was designed to measure the impact of lifestyle changes, involving a diet therapy and physical exercises in patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC). Methods: The study was conducted during January 2008 - December 2009 at ”Prof. N. Paulescu” National Institute of Diabetes, Nutrition and Metabolic Diseases - Bucharest, Romania. We selected 67 patients (34 men/33 women). We performed anthropometric measurements (weight, height, BMI (body mass index), bioimpedance analysis (BIA) as well as fasting serum lipids (cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-cholesterol), glucose profile (glucose, HbA1c), liver profile (ALT, AST, GGT, alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin, albumin, total protein), blood count for all patients at baseline. Results: The average age was 53.91±10.19 years. Obesity was present in 32.8% (n=22) of patients at baseline. Total fat mass decreased with weight loss 2.21 kg (p = 0.0001) respectively 3.17 kg (p = 0.0001). Weight loss was accompanied by decreased resting energy expenditure. Triglycerides decreased from 158.11±7.63 mg/dl to 134.88±6.1 mg/dl, cholesterol decreased from 187.3±6.8 mg/dl to 168.65±4.42 mg/dl and HDL-cholesterol increased from 45.13±1.9 mg/dl to 47.2±1.39 mg/dl after 12 months. Aspartaminotransferase, alaninaminotransferese, gamma-glutamil transpeptidase decreased with significant differences. Conclusions: Patients with hepatitis C undergoing an 1-year lifestyle intervention had significant improvements in fasting glucose, fasting insulin, HOMA-IR, lipidic profile, hepatic profile and adipose tissue distribution. Statistically bias-minimized peculiar velocity catalogs from Gibbs point processes and Bayesian inference
Galaxy peculiar velocities are excellent cosmological probes provided that
biases inherent to their measurements are contained before any study. This
paper proposes a new algorithm based on an object point process model whose
probability density is built to statistically reduce the effects of Malmquist
biases and uncertainties due to lognormal errors in radial peculiar velocity
catalogs. More precisely, a simulated annealing algorithm permits maximizing
the probability density describing the point process model. The resulting
configurations are bias-minimized catalogs. Tests are conducted on synthetic
catalogs mimicking the second and third distance modulus catalogs of the
Cosmicflows project from which peculiar velocity catalogs are derived. By
reducing the local peculiar velocity variance in catalogs by an order of
magnitude, the algorithm permits recovering the expected one while preserving
the small-scale velocity correlation. It also permits retrieving the expected
clustering. The algorithm is then applied to the observational catalogs. The
large-scale structure reconstructed with the Wiener-filter technique applied to
the bias-minimized observational catalogs matches with great success the local
cosmic web as depicted by redshift surveys of local galaxies. These new
bias-minimized versions of peculiar velocity catalogs can be used as a starting
point for several studies from possibly estimating the most probable Hubble
constant, H0, value to the production of simulations constrained to reproduce
