The Optimal Single Copy Measurement for the Hidden Subgroup Problem
The optimization of measurements for the state distinction problem has
recently been applied to the theory of quantum algorithms with considerable
successes, including efficient new quantum algorithms for the non-abelian
hidden subgroup problem. Previous work has identified the optimal single copy
measurement for the hidden subgroup problem over abelian groups as well as for
the non-abelian problem in the setting where the subgroups are restricted to be
all conjugate to each other. Here we describe the optimal single copy
measurement for the hidden subgroup problem when all of the subgroups of the
group are given with equal a priori probability. The optimal measurement is
seen to be a hybrid of the two previously discovered single copy optimal

Renormalization of Molecular Electronic Levels at Metal-Molecule Interfaces
The electronic structure of benzene on graphite (0001) is computed using the
GW approximation for the electron self-energy. The benzene quasiparticle energy
gap is predicted to be 7.2 eV on graphite, substantially reduced from its
calculated gas-phase value of 10.5 eV. This decrease is caused by a change in
electronic correlation energy, an effect completely absent from the
corresponding Kohn-Sham gap. For weakly-coupled molecules, this correlation
energy change is seen to be well described by a surface polarization effect. A
classical image potential model illustrates trends for other conjugated

Beings in their own right? Exploring Children and young people's sibling and twin relationships in the Minority World
This paper examines the contributions that the sociological study of sibship and twinship in the Minority World can make to childhood studies. It argues that, in providing one forum within which to explore children and young people's social relationships, we can add to our understanding of children and young people's interdependence and develop a more nuanced understanding of agency. As emergent subjects, children, young people and adults are in a process of ‘becoming’. However, this does not mean that they can ‘become’ anything they choose to. The notion of negotiated interdependence (Punch 2002) is useful in helping us to grasp the contingent nature of children and young people's agency
Direct experimental evidence of free fermion antibunching
Fermion antibunching was observed on a beam of free noninteracting neutrons.
A monochromatic beam of thermal neutrons was first split by a graphite single
crystal, then fed to two detectors, displaying a reduced coincidence rate. The
result is a fermionic complement to the Hanbury Brown and Twiss effect for

Interactions of Bacillus Mojavensis and Fusarium Verticillioides With a Benzoxazolinone (Boa) and Its Transformation Product, Apo
En:Journal of Chemical Ecology (2007, vol. 33, n. 10, p. 1885-1897)The benzoxazolinones, specifically benzoxazolin-2(3H)-one (BOA), are important transformation products of the benzoxazinones that can serve as allelochemicals providing resistance to maize from pathogenic bacteria, fungi, and insects. However, maize pathogens such as Fusarium verticillioides are capable of detoxifying the benzoxazolinones to 2-aminophenol (AP), which is converted to the less toxic N-(2-hydroxyphenyl) malonamic acid (HPMA) and 2-acetamidophenol (HPAA). As biocontrol strategies that utilize a species of endophytic bacterium, Bacillus mojavensis, are considered efficacious as a control of this Fusarium species, the in vitro transformation and effects of BOA on growth of this bacterium was examined relative to its interaction with strains of F. verticillioides. The results showed that a red pigment was produced and accumulated only on BOA-amended media when wild type and the progeny of genetic crosses of F. verticillioides are cultured in the presence of the bacterium. The pigment was identified as 2-amino-3H-phenoxazin-3-one (APO), which is a stable product. The results indicate that the bacterium interacts with the fungus preventing the usual transformation of AP to the nontoxic HPMA, resulting in the accumulation of higher amounts of APO than when the fungus is cultured alone. APO is highly toxic to F. verticillioides and other organisms. Thus, an enhanced biocontrol is suggested by this in vitro study.

earlier studies and goes on to calculate upper bound estimates of some of the
principal economic effects of Irish export tourism in 1976. The 1976 input-output
data of Henry (1980) form the basis for the calculations herein
Electronic states and Landau levels in graphene stacks
We analyze, within a minimal model that allows analytical calculations, the
electronic structure and Landau levels of graphene multi-layers with different
stacking orders. We find, among other results, that electrostatic effects can
induce a strongly divergent density of states in bi- and tri-layers,
reminiscent of one-dimensional systems. The density of states at the surface of
semi-infinite stacks, on the other hand, may vanish at low energies, or show a
band of surface states, depending on the stacking order
Stellar Collisions and the Interior Structure of Blue Stragglers
Collisions of main sequence stars occur frequently in dense star clusters. In
open and globular clusters, these collisions produce merger remnants that may
be observed as blue stragglers. Detailed theoretical models of this process
require lengthy hydrodynamic computations in three dimensions. However, a less
computationally expensive approach, which we present here, is to approximate
the merger process (including shock heating, hydrodynamic mixing, mass
ejection, and angular momentum transfer) with simple algorithms based on
conservation laws and a basic qualitative understanding of the hydrodynamics.
These algorithms have been fine tuned through comparisons with the results of
our previous hydrodynamic simulations. We find that the thermodynamic and
chemical composition profiles of our simple models agree very well with those
from recent SPH (smoothed particle hydrodynamics) calculations of stellar
collisions, and the subsequent stellar evolution of our simple models also
matches closely that of the more accurate hydrodynamic models. Our algorithms
have been implemented in an easy to use software package, which we are making
publicly available (see http://vassun.vassar.edu/~lombardi/mmas/). This
software could be used in combination with realistic dynamical simulations of
