ABSTRACTTubuhue Village is one of the areas in West Amanuban District, TTS Regency. The village of Tubuhue is ±96 KM from Kupang City and can only be reached by road with a travel time of ± 1.5 to 2.15 hours. The majority of the people make a living as secondary food farmers and ranchers. The only mainstay agricultural product for the people of Badanue village outside of palawija is corn, which is harvested once a year in September. The community's understanding of the potential of nature and a mindset that only relies on natural products that already exist by nature without any development efforts are the main causes of usage downturn or poverty that hit almost the entire community of Tubuhue Village. In this village, there are springs and lakes that always provide water even in the dry season. However, this maximum water source is not used properly for productive economic activities and is only used for toilet needs and some use it for vegetable farming which is solely for consumption purposes. Livestock waste is also not used as an energy source at all and only part of it is used as compost. Through this program, they can provide maximum knowledge and understanding as well as skills to be able to manage their potential by making biogas from livestock manure in improving the welfare of the community in the village of Tubuhue. The result of this program is that the community can take advantage of the potential of livestock waste as a renewable source of biogas energy. Keywords: biogas energy; tubuhue village; livestock wast

Impact of Stimulus "Value" in Infant Novelty Preference

    Get PDF
Much research indicates that by 5 months of age, infants prefer novel over familiar stimuli. The purpose of the present paper is to detennine whether novelty preference in infants can be manipulated through stimulus association. Therefore, the role of stimulus "value" in infant novelty preference was investigated. Five-month-old infants were randomly assigned to two groups. In the experimental group, a classical conditioning analogue procedure was employed where a neutral tone was associated with a picture of mother's face (over 100 trials). In the control group, infants received 100 presentations of the tone alone. A posttest was administered to both groups to measure infants' preference between the tone presented during familiarization and a novel tone. Results indicated that in the experimental group, infants preferred the familiar over the novel tone, whereas, in the control group, infants preferred the novel over the familiar tone. Thus, it appears that the mother's value was conferred onto the tone. These results provide evidence that an associated value to a neutral stimulus can actually override novelty preference

Background: The antioxidant defense system, which is known to be dysregulated in schizophrenia, is closely linked to the dynamics of purine pathway. Thus, alterations in the homeostatic balance in the purine pathway may be involved in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Methodology/Principal Findings: Breakdown products in purine pathway were measured using high-pressure liquid chromatography coupled with a coulometric multi-electrode array system for 25 first-episode neuroleptic-naïve patients with schizophrenia at baseline and at 4-weeks following initiation of treatment with antipsychotic medication. Associations between these metabolites and clinical and neurological symptoms were examined at both time points. The ratio of uric acid and guanine measured at baseline predicted clinical improvement following four weeks of treatment with antipsychotic medication. Baseline levels of purine metabolites also predicted clinical and neurological symtpoms recorded at baseline; level of guanosine was associated with degree of clinical thought disturbance, and the ratio of xanthosine to guanosine at baseline predicted degree of impairment in the repetition and sequencing of actions. Conclusions/Significance: Findings suggest an association between optimal levels of purine byproducts and dynamics in clinical symptoms and adjustment, as well as in the integrity of sensory and motor processing. Taken together, alterations in purine catabolism may have clinical relevance in schizophrenia pathology

Biological Control on Acid Generation at the Conduit-Bedrock Boundary in Submerged Caves: Quantification through Geochemical Modeling

No-mount Cave, located in Wekiwa Springs State Park in central Florida, USA, is an aphotic, submerged, freshwater cave in which large colonies of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria live in filamentous microbial mats. Upwardly discharging groundwater enters the cave from the Upper Floridan aquifer, specifically the Eocene-aged Ocala Limestone. We undertook a combined field, laboratory, and modeling study in which we sought to determine the amount of calcite dissolution attributable to the generation of protons by microbially mediated sulfide oxidation. The chemical compositions of groundwater within the limestone formation collected through a newly designed sampling device and of water in the cave conduit were used in geochemical modeling. We used the reaction-path model PHREEQCI to quantify the amount of calcite dissolution expected under various plausible scenarios for mixing of formation water with conduit water and extent of bacterial sulfide oxidation. Laboratory experiments were conducted using flow-through columns packed with crushed limestone from the study site. Replicate columns were eluted with artificial groundwater containing dissolved HS- in the absence of microbial growth. Without biologically mediated sulfide oxidation, no measurable calcite dissolution occurred in laboratory experiments and no additional amount of speleogenesis is expected as formation water mixes with conduit water in the field. In contrast, significant calcite dissolution is driven by the protons released in the biological transformation of the aqueous sulfur species. Although a range of results were calculated, a plausible amount of 158 mg Ca2+ released to conduit water per liter of groundwater crossing the formation-conduit boundary and mixing with an equal volume of conduit water was predicted. Our modeling results indicate that significant cave development can be driven by microbially mediated sulfide oxidation under these hydrogeochemical conditions.žKeywords: calcite dissolution, microbial sulfide oxidation, geochemical model.DOI: 10.3986/ac.v42i2-3.66

The airborne bacteria and fungi in parking building, playground and food court in Blok M Square, South Jakarta, were assessed in order to investigate air quality in one of the shopping center in Jakarta. The air sample was passed through plate count agar and potato dextrose agar using a single-stage multi-orifice Sampler SKC Biostage Standard. Results showed that average microbial concen-trations were 200.17, 101.17, 55, 33 CFU bacteria per m3, and 109.54, 37.69, 27.09 CFU fungi per m3 of air volume in the parking building, the children playground and the food court, respectively. The most dominating bacteria had characteristicsresembleairborne Bacillus subtilis, while the most dominating fungi wereidentified as Cryptococcus sp., Aspergillus spp., Penicillium sp. and Candida sp. The microbial concentrations were different significantly (α=0,05) inall the three areas. In addition, there were strong relationship and significant influence between the concentrations of bacteria and fungi to temperature, humidity and light intensity in in all the three areas based on Pearson correlation analysis. For today, there is no air quality standard specifically for shopping center, so the data were compared tocommon standards for indoor air quality. The concentration of bacteria and fungi met the standard regulated by TheMinistry of Health Republic of IndonesiaNo.1405/MENKES/SK/ XI/2002 about Environmental Requirements for Office and Industrial., i.e <700 CFU/m3, and acceptable according to World Health Organization (WHO) with 500 CFU/m3 as a normal condition. In any case, it is advisable to be aware ofthe spread of airborne bacteria and fungi in shopping centersthat are potentially pathogenic

Variation in Continuous Reaction Norms: Quantifying Directions of Biological Interest

    Get PDF
Abstract: Thermal performance curves are an example of continuous reaction norm curves of common shape. Three modes of variation in these curvesvertical shift, horizontal shift, and generalistspecialist tradeoffsare of special interest to evolutionary biologists. Since two of these modes are nonlinear, traditional methods such as principal components analysis fail to decompose the variation into biological modes and to quantify the variation associated with each mode. Here we present the results of a new method, template mode of variation (TMV), that decomposes the variation into predetermined modes of variation for a particular set of thermal performance curves. We illustrate the method using data on thermal sensitivity of growth rate in Pieris rapae caterpillars. The TMV model explains 67% of the variation in thermal performance curves among families; generalistspecialist tradeoffs account for 38% of the total betweenfamily variation. The TMV method implemented here is applicable to both differences in mean and patterns of variation, and it can be used with either phenotypic or quantitative genetic data for thermal performance curves or other continuous reaction norms that have a template shape with a single maximum. The TMV approach may also apply to growth trajectories, agespecific lifehistory traits, and other functionvalued traits
