Time evolution of decay of two identical quantum particles
An analytical solution for the time evolution of decay of two identical non
interacting quantum particles seated initially within a potential of finite
range is derived using the formalism of resonant states. It is shown that the
wave function, and hence also the survival and nonescape probabilities, for
factorized symmetric and entangled symmetric/antisymmetric initial states
evolve in a distinctive form along the exponentially decaying and
nonexponential regimes. Our findings show the influence of the Pauli exclusion
principle on decay. We exemplify our results by solving exactly the s-wave

An Alternative Semantics for Argumentative Systems
Defeasible argumentation is one of the approaches that addresses the challenges arising when we reason defeasibly, with several formalisms in the literature reaching a mature state. Considering that most of these theories eventually shifted their semantics towards dialectical characterizations, we believe that a sufficiently generic model of the process of reasoning in dialectical terms could also serve as an abstract model of what happens inside an argumentative system. To that end, we develop in this article a formal model of dialectical reasoning and explore its role as an alternative semantics for argumentation theories
Secado natural de yuca para la alimentacion animal: Una nueva agroindustria en Colombia
A collaborative project of the Colombian Integrated Rural Development Program (DRI) and CIAT, aimed at establishing small agroindustrial firms to produce dry cassava on the Atlantic Coast of Colombia, is described. It began with the installation of a pilot plant for natural drying of cassava, with the collaboration of a group of 15 farmers. This plant operated on an exptl. basis in 1981 to obtain information about the efficiency of the process under the conditions existing on the Colombian Atlantic Coast and to determine the product`s acceptability by the animal feed industry. In 1982, during the project`s 2nd phase, the pilot plant was operated semicommercially to obtain data on production costs; likewise, it showed the economical and technical feasibility of the process. In 1983, the 3rd phase began, consisting in the replication of the project in other cassava-producing areas of the region. In 1984 and 1985, the project grew considerably, with 20 drying plants functioning in 1984 and 36 in 1985. To establish small-scale natural cassava drying plants, the following requisites are essential: (1) selection of a processing technology that can be assimilated, controlled, and easily managed by farmers; (2) implementation of integrated programs of processing, production, and commercialization that reduce the risks and increase net incomes of farmers; and (3) provision of institutional support that is adequate in terms of technical assistance, credit facilities, management and fiscal training, and of advice in the formation and consolidation of cooperative and associative groups for agricultural production. The Chemical Compositions of the SRd Variable Stars-- II. WY Andromedae, VW Eridani, and UW Librae
Chemical compositions are derived from high-resolution spectra for three
stars classed as SRd variables in the General Catalogue of Variable Stars.
These stars are shown to be metal-poor supergiants: WY And with [Fe/H] = -1.0,
VW Eri with [Fe/H] = -1.8, and UW Lib with [Fe/H] = -1.2. Their compositions
are identical to within the measurement errors with the compositions of
subdwarfs, subgiants, and less evolved giants of the same FeH. The stars are at
the tip of the first giant branch or in the early stages of evolution along the
asymptotic giant branch (AGB). There is no convincing evidence that these SRd
variables are experiencing thermal pulsing and the third dredge-up on the AGB.
The SRds appear to be the cool limit of the sequence of RV Tauri variables.Comment: 14 pages, 1 figure, 4 table
Thermodynamics of a model for RNA folding
We analyze the thermodynamic properties of a simplified model for folded RNA
molecules recently studied by G. Vernizzi, H. Orland, A. Zee (in {\it Phys.
Rev. Lett.} {\bf 94} (2005) 168103). The model consists of a chain of
one-flavor base molecules with a flexible backbone and all possible pairing
interactions equally allowed. The spatial pseudoknot structure of the model can
be efficiently studied by introducing a hermitian random matrix
model at each chain site, and associating Feynman diagrams of these models to
spatial configurations of the molecules. We obtain an exact expression for the
topological expansion of the partition function of the system. We calculate
exact and asymptotic expressions for the free energy, specific heat,
entanglement and chemical potential and study their behavior as a function of
temperature. Our results are consistent with the interpretation of as
being a measure of the concentration of in solution.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
Topological phase transition in a RNA model in the de Gennes regime
We study a simplified model of the RNA molecule proposed by G. Vernizzi, H.
Orland and A. Zee in the regime of strong concentration of positive ions in
solution. The model considers a flexible chain of equal bases that can pairwise
interact with any other one along the chain, while preserving the property of
saturation of the interactions. In the regime considered, we observe the
emergence of a critical temperature T_c separating two phases that can be
characterized by the topology of the predominant configurations: in the large
temperature regime, the dominant configurations of the molecule have very large
genera (of the order of the size of the molecule), corresponding to a complex
topology, whereas in the opposite regime of low temperatures, the dominant
configurations are simple and have the topology of a sphere. We determine that
this topological phase transition is of first order and provide an analytic
expression for T_c. The regime studied for this model exhibits analogies with

Lagrangian Variational Framework for Boundary Value Problems
A boundary value problem is commonly associated with constraints imposed on a
system at its boundary. We advance here an alternative point of view treating
the system as interacting "boundary" and "interior" subsystems. This view is
implemented through a Lagrangian framework that allows to account for (i) a
variety of forces including dissipative acting at the boundary; (ii) a
multitude of features of interactions between the boundary and the interior
fields when the boundary fields may differ from the boundary limit of the
interior fields; (iii) detailed pictures of the energy distribution and its
flow; (iv) linear and nonlinear effects. We provide a number of elucidating
examples of the structured boundary and its interactions with the system
interior. We also show that the proposed approach covers the well known

Duodenal intraepithelial lymphocytes of children with cow milk allergy preferentially bind the glycan-binding protein galectin-3
A breakdown in intestinal homeostasis results in inflammatory bowel diseases including coeliac disease and allergy. Galectins, evolutionarily conserved beta-galactoside-binding proteins, can modulate immune-epithelial cell interactions by influencing immune cell fate and cytokine secretion. In this study we investigated the glycosylation signature, as well as the regulated expression of galectin-1 and -3 in human duodenal samples of allergic and non-allergic children. Whereas galectin-1 was predominantly localized in the epithelial compartment (epithelial cells and intraepithelial lymphocytes) and the underlying lamina propria (T cells, macrophages and plasma cells), galectin-3 was mainly expressed by crypt epithelial cells and macrophages in the lamina propria. Remarkably, expression of these galectins was not significantly altered in allergic versus non-allergic patients. Investigation of the glycophenotype of the duodenal inflammatory microenvironment revealed substantial alpha2-6-linked sialic acid bound to galactose in lamina propria plasma cells, macrophages and intraepithelial lymphocytes and significant levels of asialo core 1 O-glycans in CD68+ macrophages and enterocytes. Galectin-1 preferentially bound to neutrophils, plasma cells and enterocytes, while galectin-3 binding sites were mainly distributed on macrophages and intraepithelial lymphocytes. Notably, galectin-3, but not galectin-1 binding, was substantially increased in intraepithelial gut lymphocytes of allergic patients compared to non-allergic subjects, suggesting a potential role of galectin-3-glycan interactions in shaping epithelial-immune cell connections during allergic inflammatory processes.Fil: Mercer, Natalia.
