    Thermoelectric properties in Ca3Co4-xMnxOy ceramics

    Ca3Co4-xMnxOy polycrystalline thermoelectric ceramics with small amounts of Mn have been prepared by the classical solid state method. X-ray diffraction data have shown that Ca3Co4O9 is the major phase, with small amounts of the Ca3Co2O6 one. Moreover, they show that the Mn has been incorporated into these two phases. Electrical resistivity decreases, compared with the values for undoped samples, with Mn content until a minimum for the 0·03 doped ones, increasing for higher Mn substitution. Seebeck coefficient does not change in all the measured temperature range, independently of Mn content. The improvement in electrical resistivity leads ∼30% higher power factor values for the 0·03 Mn doped samples than that obtained in the undoped ones. The maximum power factor at 800°C, ∼0·28 mW K-2 m-1, is close to that obtained in much higher density samples, clearly indicating the good thermoelectric properties of these samples.The authors wish to thank the Gobierno de Aragón (Research Groups T12 and T87) and the MINECO-FEDER (MAT2013-46505-C3-1-R) for financial support.     Ca3Co4-xNixO9 (x=0.01, 0.03, and 0.05) polycrystalline thermoelectric ceramics have been prepared by the classical solid state method. As a result of the Ni addition an increase in porosity has been detected. Moreover, the presence of Ni has been related with the increase of Ca2Co3O6 secondary phase and the appearance of a new NiO-CoO solid solution. However, for the 0.01-Ni doped samples an improvement in the thermoelectric performances has been measured. This effect has been related with a decrease in the resistivity values and an increase in the Seebeck coefficient. The raise in the power factor for the 0.01-Ni doped samples, compared with the undoped ones, is between 10 and 25% at 50 and 800 °C respectively. Moreover, the maximum power at 800 °C, around 0.25 mW/K2.m, is significantly higher than the best results obtained in Ni doped samples reported previously in the literature

    Effect of Na doping on the Ca3Co4O9 thermoelectric performance

    Ca3-xNaxCo4O9 polycrystalline thermoelectric ceramics with small amounts of Na (x=0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.05, 0.07, and 0.10) have been prepared using the classical solid state method. Microstructural characterization has shown that Na has been incorporated into the Ca3Co4O9 phase and that no Na-based secondary phases have been produced. It has also been found that Na addition promotes grain growth and favours sintering due to the formation of a small amount of liquid phase. Electrical resistivity decreases when Na content increases until 0.07Na addition while Seebeck coefficient is maintained practically unchanged. The improvement in electrical resistivity leads to higher power factor values than the usually obtained in samples prepared by more complex and expensive techniques.This research has been supported by the Spanish MINECO-FEDER (MAT2013-46505-C3-1-R).     Heavy Metals as Risk Factors for Human Diseases - A Bayesian Network Approach

    Modern industrial agricultural processes expose human beings to multifactorial environmental pollution including heightened levels of heavy metals. The effects of acute heavy metal exposures at toxic levels are usually known; they are tested for and treated promptly. The effects of low/moderate-level chronic heavy metal exposures are less known as they may be subclinical, and pathogenic effects may only manifest clinically over time under the disguise of a diagnosable disease or miscellaneous symptoms attributed to aging. Consequently, the health impact of low-moderate heavy metal exposure is unlikely to be identified. Furthermore, established heavy metal safety levels often fail to recognize the potential toxic effects on humans. We report in this review what is known about the sub-chronic and chronic effects of exposure to heavy metals, particularly lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, and nickel, and we highlight their possible effects in the brain, cardiovascular and endocrine-metabolic systems, and on reproduction

    Energy efficiency of load balancing for data-parallel applications in heterogeneous systems

    The use of heterogeneous systems in supercomputing is on the rise as they improve both performance and energy e ciency. However, the pro- gramming of these machines requires considerable e ort to get the best results in massively data-parallel applications. Maat is a library that enables OpenCL programmers to e ciently execute single data-parallel kernels using all the available devices on a heterogeneous system. It o ers a set of load balanc- ing methods, which perform the data partitioning and distribution among the devices, exploiting more of the performance of the system and consequently re- ducing execution time. Until now, however, a study of the implications of these on the energy consumption has not been made. Therefore, this paper analyses the energy e ciency of the di erent load balancing methods compared to a baseline system that uses just a single GPU. To evaluate the impact of the heterogeneity of the system, the GPUs were set to di erent frequencies. The obtained results show that in all the studied cases there is at least one load balancing method that improves energy e ciency

    Oral Serum-Derived Bovine Immunoglobulin/Protein Isolate Has Immunomodulatory Effects on the Colon of Mice that Spontaneously Develop Colitis

    Dietary immunoglobulin concentrates prepared from animal plasma can modulate the immune response of gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT). Previous studies have revealed that supplementation with serum-derived bovine immunoglobulin/protein isolate (SBI) ameliorates colonic barrier alterations in the mdr1a-/- genetic mouse model of IBD. Here, we examine the effects of SBI on mucosal inflammation in mdr1a-/- mice that spontaneously develop colitis. Wild type (WT) mice and mice lacking the mdr1a gene (KO) were fed diets supplemented with either SBI (2% w/w) or milk proteins (Control diet), from day 21 (weaning) until day 56. Leucocytes in mesenteric lymph nodes (MLN) and in lamina propria were determined, as was mucosal cytokine production. Neutrophil recruitment and activation in MLN and lamina propria of KO mice were increased, but were significantly reduced in both by SBI supplementation (p < 0.05). The increased neutrophil recruitment and activation observed in KO mice correlated with increased colon oxidative stress (p < 0.05) and SBI supplementation reduced this variable (p < 0.05). The Tact/Treg lymphocyte ratios in MLN and lamina propria were also increased in KO animals, but SBI prevented these changes (both p < 0.05). In the colon of KO mice, there was an increased production of mucosal proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-2 (2-fold), IL-6 (26-fold) and IL-17 (19-fold), and of chemokines MIP-1β (4.5-fold) and MCP-1 (7.2-fold). These effects were significantly prevented by SBI (p < 0.05). SBI also significantly increased TGF-β secretion in the colon mucosa, suggesting a role of this anti-inflammatory cytokine in the modulation of GALT and the reduction of the severity of the inflammatory response during the onset of colitis

    ABSTRAC: This article aims at developing an efficient measurement scale for corporate social responsibility in the tourism industry, given the contextual character that is recognized in the practice of this construct. Indicators were generated on the basis of a literature review and qualitative research. To assess the reliability and validity, first- and second-order confirmatory factor analysis were carried out. Results show a multidimensional structure of this construct—including economic, social, and environmental issues. This study contributes to the advancement of knowledge in the field of social responsibility through its practical application regarding concepts of sustainable development which have mainly been theoretical
