    A Comparison of the Growth Performance and Worm Resistance of Lambs Produced by Diallel Crossing of Three Indian Sheep Breeds

    ABSTRACT: As part of a project aimed at increasing the efficiency of sheep meat production in Maharashtra state, rams of the Deccani (D), Bannur (B) and Garole (G) breeds were mated to D and B ewes in an incomplete diallel design over a 3 year period. Progeny were evaluated for growth rate and resistance to gastrointestinal nematodes. The Deccani is the local woolly meat sheep, the Bannur a hairy meat sheep and the Garole a small but highly fecund woolly meat sheep. Lambs sired by D and B rams had higher birthweights and growth to 6 months than those sired by G rams. Lambs sired by G and B rams were more resistant to naturally acquired worm infections and to artificial challenge with Haemonchus contortus than those sired by D rams

    Frailty in older-age European migrants:Cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses of the Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe (SHARE)

Frailty of older migrants has important implications for the demands placed on healthcare systems. Examining 95,635 Europeans in the Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe, we investigated cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between migration and frailty at ages > 50 years. We examined whether associations differed by countries' level of healthcare coverage and access for migrants and tested mediation by home-ownership and citizenship. Cross-sectionally, first-generation migrants > 50 years old were, on average, 16.4% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 14.6, 18.2%) frailer than non-migrants after confounder-adjustment. This decreased to 12.1% (95% CI: 10.1, 14.1%) after adjustment for citizenship. The strength of association between migrant status and frailty was greater in migrants from low-or-middle-income countries, compared with mi-grants from high-income countries. Migrants into Northern, Western and Eastern Europe were 37.3% (95% CI:33.2, 41.5%), 12.2% (95% CI: 10.0, 14.6%) and 5.0% (95% CI: 0.5, 9.6%) frailer than non-migrants, respectively, but migrants into Southern Europe were no frailer than non-migrants. The strength of association between migrant status and frailty was greater in countries with lower healthcare coverage and access for migrants. However, citizenship attenuated this difference. Longitudinally, migrants were frailer than non-migrants at 50 years old and trajectories converged over time until migrants and non-migrants were equally frail by 80–90 years. Our work finds no evidence of the ‘healthy migrant effect’ outside of Southern Europe in older migrants and suggests that acculturation is a key determinant of migrant health.The project MiLifeStatus has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon2020 research and innovation programme (grant agreement No 682626

    GEANT4 : a simulation toolkit

    Abstract Geant4 is a toolkit for simulating the passage of particles through matter. It includes a complete range of functionality including tracking, geometry, physics models and hits. The physics processes offered cover a comprehensive range, including electromagnetic, hadronic and optical processes, a large set of long-lived particles, materials and elements, over a wide energy range starting, in some cases, from 250 eV and extending in others to the TeV energy range. It has been designed and constructed to expose the physics models utilised, to handle complex geometries, and to enable its easy adaptation for optimal use in different sets of applications. The toolkit is the result of a worldwide collaboration of physicists and software engineers. It has been created exploiting software engineering and object-oriented technology and implemented in the C++ programming language. It has been used in applications in particle physics, nuclear physics, accelerator design, space engineering and medical physics. PACS: 07.05.Tp; 13; 2

    BOUT++ : Recent and current developments

    BOUT++ is a 3D nonlinear finite-difference plasma simulation code, capable of solving quite general systems of PDEs, but targeted particularly on studies of the edge region of tokamak plasmas. BOUT++ is publicly available, and has been adopted by a growing number of researchers worldwide. Here we present improvements which have been made to the code since its original release, both in terms of structure and its capabilities. Some recent applications of these methods are reviewed, and areas of active development are discussed. We also present algorithms and tools which have been developed to enable creation of inputs from analytic expressions and experimental data, and for processing and visualisation of output results. This includes a new tool Hypnotoad for the creation of meshes from experimental equilibria. Algorithms have been implemented in BOUT++ to solve a range of linear algebraic problems encountered in the simulation of reduced MHD and gyro-fluid models: A preconditioning scheme is presented which enables the plasma potential to be calculated efficiently using iterative methods supplied by the PETSc library, without invoking the Boussinesq approximation. Scaling studies are also performed of a linear solver used as part of physics-based preconditioning to accelerate the convergence of implicit time-integration schemes

    AVONET: Morphological, ecological and geographical data for all birds

    Functional traits offer a rich quantitative framework for developing and testing theories in evolutionary biology, ecology and ecosystem science. However, the potential of functional traits to drive theoretical advances and refine models of global change can only be fully realised when species-level information is complete. Here we present the AVONET dataset containing comprehensive functional trait data for all birds, including six ecological variables, 11 continuous morphological traits, and information on range size and location. Raw morphological measurements are presented from 90,020 individuals of 11,009 extant bird species sampled from 181 countries. These data are also summarised as species averages in three taxonomic formats, allowing integration with a global phylogeny, geographical range maps, IUCN Red List data and the eBird citizen science database. The AVONET dataset provides the most detailed picture of continuous trait variation for any major radiation of organisms, offering a global template for testing hypotheses and exploring the evolutionary origins, structure and functioning of biodiversity.Fil: Tobias, Joseph A..     Scrape Off Layer (SOL) transport and filamentary characteristics in high density tokamak regimes

    A detailed cross-device investigation on the role of filamentary dynamics in high density regimes has been performed within the EUROfusion framework comparing ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) and TCV tokamaks. Both devices have run density ramp experiments at different levels of plasma current, keeping toroidal field or q95 constant in order to disentangle the role of parallel connection length and the current. During the scan at constant toroidal field, in both devices SOL profiles tend to develop a clear Scrape Off Layer (SOL) density shoulder at lower edge density whenever current is reduced. The different current behavior is substantially reconciled in terms of edge density normalized to Greenwald fraction. During the scan at constant q95 AUG exhibits a similar behaviour whereas in TCV no signature of upstream profile modification has been observed at lower level of currents. The latter behaviour has been ascribed to the lack of target density roll-over. The relation between upstream density profile modification and detachment condition has been investigated. For both devices the relation between blob-size and SOL density e-folding length is found independent of the plasma current, with a clear increase of blob-size with edge density normalized to Greenwald fraction observed. ASDEX Upgrade has also explored the filamentary behaviour in H-Mode. The experiments on AUG focused on the role of neutrals, performing discharges with and without the cryogenic pumps, highlighting how large neutral pressure not only in the divertor but at the midplane is needed in order to develop a H-Mode SOL profile shoulder in AUG

    Overview of recent physics results from MAST

    New results from MAST are presented that focus on validating models in order to extrapolate to future devices. Measurements during start-up experiments have shown how the bulk ion temperature rise scales with the square of the reconnecting field. During the current ramp-up, models are not able to correctly predict the current diffusion. Experiments have been performed looking at edge and core turbulence. At the edge, detailed studies have revealed how filament characteristics are responsible for determining the near and far scrape off layer density profiles. In the core the intrinsic rotation and electron scale turbulence have been measured. The role that the fast ion gradient has on redistributing fast ions through fishbone modes has led to a redesign of the neutral beam injector on MAST Upgrade. In H-mode the turbulence at the pedestal top has been shown to be consistent with being due to electron temperature gradient modes. A reconnection process appears to occur during edge localized modes (ELMs) and the number of filaments released determines the power profile at the divertor. Resonant magnetic perturbations can mitigate ELMs provided the edge peeling response is maximised and the core kink response minimised. The mitigation of intrinsic error fields with toroidal mode number n  >  1 has been shown to be important for plasma performance
