Resigned indifference: an explanation of gaps in care for culturally and linguistically diverse patients'
Aims: To develop a theory that explains students and registered nursesâ behaviours when caring for culturally and linguistically diverse patientsâ.
Background: Despite ongoing calls for improvements to the quality of patient care, the continued reports of substandard care to patients from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds are concerning.
Methods: A classic grounded theory methodology incorporating focus groups (n-10) and individual interviews (n-30) with students and registered nurses in one region of Ireland.
Findings: Participants resolved their main concern of uncertainty through disengagement (masking, distancing and fitting in), which was sustained by resigned indifference, resulting in gaps in care. Resigned indifference explains how participants were aware of the consequences of disengagement, but became resigned and accepting of substandard care.
Conclusion: This study explains how nurses want to provide quality care, but gaps in care to culturally and linguistically diverse patientsâ are perpetuated through resigned indifference.
Implications for Nursing Management: Nurse Managers need to understand nursesâ behaviours as a means of supporting collective ways of addressing gaps in care for culturally and linguistically diverse patients. Strategic leadership in developing culturally responsive structures is essential. Nurturing nursing values such as; commitment, compassion, and courage through education and leadership is a priority
Equilibrium Configurations of Strongly Magnetized Neutron Stars with Realistic Equations of State
We investigate equilibrium sequences of magnetized rotating stars with four
kinds of realistic equations of state (EOSs) of SLy (Douchin et al.), FPS
(Pandharipande et al.), Shen (Shen et al.), and LS (Lattimer & Swesty).
Employing the Tomimura-Eriguchi scheme to construct the equilibrium
configurations. we study the basic physical properties of the sequences in the
framework of Newton gravity. In addition we newly take into account a general
relativistic effect to the magnetized rotating configurations. With these
computations, we find that the properties of the Newtonian magnetized stars,
e.g., structure of magnetic field, highly depends on the EOSs.
The toroidal magnetic fields concentrate rather near the surface for Shen and
LS EOSs than those for SLy and FPS EOSs. The poloidal fields are also affected
by the toroidal configurations. Paying attention to the stiffness of the EOSs,
we analyze this tendency in detail. In the general relativistic stars, we find
that the difference due to the EOSs becomes small because all the employed EOSs
become sufficiently stiff for the large maximum density, typically greater than
. The maximum baryon mass of the magnetized stars
with axis ratio increases about up to twenty percents for that of
spherical stars. We furthermore compute equilibrium sequences at finite
temperature, which should serve as an initial condition for the hydrodynamic
study of newly-born magnetars. Our results suggest that we may obtain
information about the EOSs from the observation of the masses of magnetars.Comment: submitted to MNRA
On non-axisymmetric magnetic equilibria in stars
In previous work stable approximately axisymmetric equilibrium configurations
for magnetic stars were found by numerical simulation. Here I investigate the
conditions under which more complex, non-axisymmetric configurations can form.
I present numerical simulations of the formation of stable equilibria from
turbulent initial conditions and demonstrate the existence of non-axisymmetric
equilibria consisting of twisted flux tubes lying horizontally below the
surface of the star, meandering around the star in random patterns. Whether
such a non-axisymmetric equilibrium or a simple axisymmetric equilibrium forms
depends on the radial profile of the strength of the initial magnetic field.
The results could explain observations of non-dipolar fields on stars such as
the B0.2 main-sequence star tau-Sco or the pulsar 1E 1207.4-5209. The secular
evolution of these equilibria due to Ohmic and buoyancy processes is also

Prevalence and number of Salmonella in retail pork sausages
The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of Salmonella in Irish pork sausage at retail level. Samples, comprising branded prepacked sausages, loose sausages from supermarket meat counters and butcher shops, were collected from selected retail sites in four cities from October to December 2001 and from June to August 2002. A 3-tube Most Probable Number (MPN) method was used to enumerate Salmonella in a selected number of samples, which were positive by enrichment. Salmonella serotypes were detected in 4.4% and 1.7% of samples at each of the respective sampling periods; a level similar to those reported in other U.S. and U.K. studies. Limited results available on enumeration suggest that contamination rates were low. This study revealed that Salmonella are present in a proportion of Irish sausages and further risk analysis work is necessary in order to quantify the risk posed to public health. On a mechanism for enhancing magnetic activity in tidally interacting binaries
We suggest a mechanism for enhancing magnetic activity in tidally interacting
binaries. We suppose that the deviation of the primary star from spherical
symmetry due to the tidal influence of the companion leads to stellar pulsation
in its fundamental mode. It is shown that stellar radial pulsation amplifies
torsional Alfv{\'e}n waves in a dipole-like magnetic field, buried in the
interior, according to the recently proposed swing wave-wave interaction
(Zaqarashvili 2001). Then amplified Alfv{\'e}n waves lead to the onset of
large-scale torsional oscillations, and magnetic flux tubes arising towards the
surface owing to magnetic buoyancy diffuse into the atmosphere producing

A KRT71 Loss-of-Function Variant Results in Inner Root Sheath Dysplasia and Recessive Congenital Hypotrichosis of Hereford Cattle
Genodermatoses, such as heritable skin disorders, mostly represent Mendelian conditions. Congenital hypotrichosis (HY) characterize a condition of being born with less hair than normal. The purpose of this study was to characterize the clinicopathological phenotype of a breed-specific non-syndromic form of HY in Hereford cattle and to identify the causative genetic variant for this recessive disorder. Affected calves showed a very short, fine, wooly, kinky and curly coat over all parts of the body, with a major expression in the ears, the inner part of the limbs, and in the thoracic-abdominal region. Histopathology showed a severely altered morphology of the inner root sheath (IRS) of the hair follicle with abnormal Huxley and Henleâs layers and severely dysplastic hair shafts. A genome-wide association study revealed an association signal on chromosome 5. Homozygosity mapping in a subset of cases refined the HY locus to a 690 kb critical interval encompassing a cluster of type II keratin encoding genes. Protein-coding exons of six positional candidate genes with known hair or hair follicle function were re-sequenced. This revealed a protein-changing variant in the KRT71 gene that encodes a type II keratin specifically expressed in the IRS of the hair follicle (c.281delTGTGCCCA; p.Met94AsnfsX14). Besides obvious phenocopies, a perfect concordance between the presence of this most likely pathogenic loss-of-function variant located in the head domain of KRT71 and the HY phenotype was found. This recessive KRT71-related form of hypotrichosis provides a novel large animal model for similar human conditions. Violent video games and morality: a meta-ethical approach
This paper considers what it is about violent video games that leads one reasonably minded person to declare "That is immoral" while another denies it. Three interpretations of video game content a re discussed: reductionist, narrow, and broad. It is argued that a broad interpretation is required for a moral objection to be justified. It is further argued that understanding the meaning of moral utterances â like "x is immoral" â is important to an understanding of why there is a lack of moral consensus when it comes to the content of violent video games. Constructive ecumenical expressivism is presented as a means of explaining what it is that we are doing when we make moral pronouncements and why, when it comes to video game content, differing moral attitudes abound.
