Correlating the interstellar magnetic field with protostellar jets and its sources
This article combines new CCD polarimetric data with previous information
about protostellar objects in a search for correlations involving the
interstellar magnetic field. Specifically, we carried out an optical
polarimetric study of a sample of 28 fields of 10 X 10 arcmin^2 located in the
neighborhood of protostellar jets and randomly spread over the Galaxy. The
polarimetry of a large number of field stars is used to estimate both the
average and dispersion of the interstellar magnetic field (ISMF) direction in
each region. The results of the applied statistical tests are as follows.
Concerning the alignment between the jet direction and the interstellar
magnetic field, the whole sample does not show alignment. There is, however, a
statistically significant alignment for objects of Classes 0 and I. Regarding
the interstellar magnetic field dispersion, our sample presents values slightly
larger for regions containing T Tauri objects than for those harboring younger
protostars. Moreover the ISMF dispersion in regions containing high-mass
objects tends to be larger than in those including only low-mass protostars. In
our sample, the mean interstellar polarization as a function of the average
interstellar extinction in a region reaches a maximum value around 3% for A(V)
= 5, after which it decreases. Our data also show a clear correlation of the
mean value of the interstellar polarization with the dispersion of the
interstellar magnetic field: the larger the dispersion, the smaller the
polarization. Based on a comparison of our and previous results, we suggest
that the dispersion in regions forming stars is larger than in quiescent

The cluster of galaxies Abell 376
We present a dynamical analysis of the galaxy cluster Abell 376 based on a
set of 73 velocities, most of them measured at Pic du Midi and Haute-Provence
observatories and completed with data from the literature. Data on individual
galaxies are presented and the accuracy of the determined velocities is
discussed as well as some properties of the cluster. We obtained an improved
mean redshift value z=0.0478^{+0.005}_{-0.006} and velocity dispersion
sigma=852^{+120}_{-76}km/s. Our analysis indicates that inside a radius of
900h_{70}^{-1}kpc (15 arcmin) the cluster is well relaxed without any
remarkable feature and the X-ray emission traces fairly well the galaxy
distribution. A possible substructure is seen at 20 arcmin from the centre
towards the Southwest direction, but is not confirmed by the velocity field.
This SW clump is, however, kinematically bound to the main structure of Abell
376. A dense condensation of galaxies is detected at 46 arcmin (projected
distance 2.6h_{70}^{-1}Mpc) from the centre towards the Northwest and analysis
of the apparent luminosity distribution of its galaxies suggests that this
clump is part of the large scale structure of Abell 376. X-ray spectroscopic
analysis of ASCA data resulted in a temperature kT = 4.3+/-0.4 keV and metal
abundance Z = 0.32+/-0.08 Z_solar. The velocity dispersion corresponding to
this temperature using the T_X-sigma scaling relation is in agreement with the

Carrier induced ferromagnetism in concentrated and diluted local-moment systems
For modeling the magnetic properties of concentrated and diluted magnetic
semiconductors, we use the Kondo-lattice model. The magnetic phase diagram is
derived by inspecting the static susceptibility of itinerant band electrons,
which are exchange coupled to localized magnetic moments. It turns out that
rather low band occupations favour a ferromagnetic ordering of the local moment
systems due to an indirect coupling mediated by a spin polarization of the
itinerant charge carriers. The disorder in diluted systems is treated by adding
a CPA-type concept to the theory. For almost all moment concentrations x,
ferromagnetism is possible, however, only for carrier concentrations n
distinctly smaller than x. The charge carrier compensation in real magnetic
semiconductors (in Ga_{1-x}Mn_{x}As by e.g. antisites) seems to be a necessary
condition for getting carrier induced ferromagnetism.Comment: 9 pages (REVTeX), 6 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.
Strong dipole coupling in nonpolar nitride quantum dots due to Coulomb effects
Optical properties of polar and nonpolar nitride quantum dots (QDs) are determined on the basis of a microscopic theory which combines a continuum elasticity approach to the polarization potential, a tight-binding model for the electronic energies and wavefunctions, and a many-body theory for the optical properties. For nonpolar nitride quantum dots, we find that optical absorption and emission spectra exhibit a weak ground-state oscillator strength in a single-particle calculation whereas the Coulomb configuration interaction strongly enhances the ground-state transitions. This finding sheds new light on existing discrepancies between previous theoretical and experimental results for these systems, as a weak ground state transition was predicted because of the spatial separation of the corresponding electron and hole state due to intrinsic fields whereas experimentally fast optical transitions have been observed. Distribution and Excretion of TEGDMA in Guinea Pigs and Mice
The monomer triethyleneglycoldimethacrylate (TEGDMA) is used as a diluent in many resin-based dental materials. It was previously shown in vitro that TEGDMA was released into the adjacent biophase from such materials during the first days after placement. In this study, the uptake, distribution, and excretion of 14C-TEGDMA applied via gastric, intradermal, and intravenous administration at dose levels well above those encountered in dental care were examined in vivo in guinea pigs and mice as a test of the hypothesis that TEGDMA reaches cytotoxic levels in mammalian tissues. 14C-TEGDMA was taken up rapidly from the stomach and small intestine after gastric administration in both species and was widely distributed in the body following administration by each route. Most 14C was excreted within one day as 14 CO2. The peak equivalent TEGDMA levels in all mouse and guinea pig tissues examined were at least 1000-fold less than known toxic levels. Optical polarimetric monitoring of the type II-plateau SN 2005af
Aims. Core-collapse supernovae may show significant polarization that implies
non-spherically symmetric explosions. We observed the type II-plateau SN 2005af
using optical polarimetry in order to verify whether any asphericity is present
in the supernova temporal evolution. Methods. We used the IAGPOL imaging
polarimeter to obtain optical linear polarization measurements in R (five
epochs) and V (one epoch) broadbands. Interstellar polarization was estimated
from the field stars in the CCD frames. The optical polarimetric monitoring
began around one month after the explosion and lasted ~30 days, between the
plateau and the early nebular phase. Results. The weighted mean observed
polarization in R band was [1.89 +/- 0.03]% at position angle (PA) 54 deg.
After foreground subtraction, the level of the average intrinsic polarization
for SN 2005af was ~0.5% with a slight enhancement during the plateau phase and
a decline at early nebular phase. A rotation in PA on a time scale of days was
also observed. The polarimetric evolution of SN 2005af in the observed epochs
is consistent with an overall asphericity of ~20% and an inclination of ~30
deg. Evidence for a more complex, evolving asphericity, possibly involving
clumps in the SN 2005af envelope, is found.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, to be published A&
