ERTS-1 image contributes to understanding of geologic structures related to Managua earthquake, 1972
ERTS-1 imaged the western portion of Nicaragua on December 24, 1972, one day after the central part of the city of Managua was devastated by a major earthquake which measured 5.6 on the Richter scale. ERTS-1 images reveal sets of lineaments (which may reflect fault systems) along any one of which movement could have taken place. One set includes a line of active volcanoes that parallels the coast and constitutes the southwestern edge of the Nicaraguan Depression, a regional graben which cuts obliquely across the Central American isthmus. This trend is offset approximately 10km in a right lateral geometric sense just west of the city of Managua. A parallel lineament, north of Lake Managua, marks the northeast edge of the graben. A second set, extends northward to northwestward from the mouth of the Rio Grande (Viejo) north of Lake Managua and can be projected southward across the lake to Managua. It is this set along which geometric offset of the volcanic lineament appears to have taken place
Syphon Diaphragms : A Method for Predicting Their Performance for Purposes of Instrument Design
Here, the purpose is to show that the characteristic performance of a syphon diaphragm can be predicted from a knowledge of its stiffness and of its dimensions. The proof is based on a mathematical analysis of this type of diaphragm, together with enough experimental data to prove the validity of the assumptions and the sufficiency of the analysis. Equations are developed for the performance of syphons under various conditions of loading, both for concentrated loads and for hydrostatic pressure
Synonyms: The appendix of SQL/DS?
Citation: Eaton, R. (1992). Synonyms: The appendix of SQL/DS? DATABASE Programming & Design, 5(10) 25-27As I lay in my hospital room recovering from an emergency appendectomy, the surgeon described the operation. His confidence was comforting; that is, until he tried to explain the purpose of the tissue he had removed from me so hastily. He couldn't find the right words. And as he attempted to convince me that he really did know about appendixes, I concluded that he really didn't know their purpose. His interest in appendixes surfaced only when they became infected
SQl/DS Tool Support and Third-Party Vendors: What's on the Horizon?
Citation: Eaton, R. (1992). SQl/DS Tool Support and Third-Party Vendors: What's on the Horizon? DATABASE Programming & Design, 5(10) 75-76In the beginning, there was SQL/DS. Developed by IBM as an expansion to Sequel (a derivative of its first relational DBMS effort, System R), it served VSE/SP installations, and later, VM/SP. Its reception was lukewarm. SQL/DS was slow out of the gate, perhaps due to the lack of complimentary products. Managing an SQL/DS database requires more set-up than the standard VSAM delete and define. Although the number of SQL/OS licenses has reached 7,500 to 8,000, few shops have given SQL/DS the nod as their "first team" data structure
An Analysis of the Marketing Practices of Selected Snowmobile Companies in North America
This thesis describes and analyzes the marketing practices of snowmobile companies in North America. The data were obtained principally from a review of related literature and from structured interviews with representatives from selected snowmobile companies in North America. The main topics discussed in the thesis are: consumer attitudes, channels of distribution, methods of physical distribution, pricing methods and policies, advertising methods and sales promotion.
Snowmobiles were purchased primarily for personal pleasure, racing, and family pleasure. Three major characteristics considered by consumers in choosing a brand of snowmobile were the dependability and reliability of the snowmobile, the quality of the construction of the snowmobile, and the availability of parts and service.
The channels of distribution employed by snowmobile companies were the manufacturer-distributor-retailer-consumer channel, manufacturer- retailer-consumer channel, and the manufacturer-distributor channel. Twenty-one snowmobile companies employed the manufacturer-distributor- consumer-retailer channel.
Four methods of transporting snowmobiles were trucks, railroads, ships, and airplanes. Trucks were employed by all of the snowmobile companies surveyed to transport snowmobiles.
Cost-plus pricing was employed by sixteen of the snowmobile companies surveyed for the determination of prices for snowmobiles. Trade, quantity, cash, and seasonal discounts were granted to middlemen.
The mean advertising expenditure of the snowmobile companies surveyed was 5.2 percent of the yearly gross revenue. Magazines were the most commonly used advertising medium. Television was adjudged to be the most effective advertising medium for snowmobile companies.
All of the snowmobile companies assisted their middlemen in numerous sales promotion activities

Repositories, data dictionaries, and encyclopedias for SQL/DS
Citation: Eaton, R. (1993). Repositories, data dictionaries, and encyclopedias for SQL/DS. DATABASE Programming & Design, 6(6) 21-22Justified Confusion and wonderment exists about the support of repositories, data dictionaries, and encyclopedias for the SQL/DS platform. In my role as an SQL/DS DBA, I was obliged to design and develop my own data dictionary. During the process, I developed an understanding of the various genre of development support databases. At their highest level of definition, reposi tories, encyclopedias, and data dictionaries are databases that support applications development. I may get some argument about this definition from business data modeling people, but hey, most of us are paid to deliver business systems. A business model is only valuable (to most of us, anyway) if it leads to a business solution. Thus, I refer to repositories, encyclopedias, and data dictionaries as applications-development support databases. For our purposes, let's agree that designing a business model is part of the applications-development process
