    A dual output polarimeter devoted to the study of the Cosmic Microwave Background

    We have developed a correlation radiometer at 33 GHz devoted to the search for residual polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). The two instruments`s outputs are linear combination of two Stokes Parameters (Q and U or U and V). The instrument is therefore directly sensitive to the polarized component of the radiation (respectively linear and circular). The radiometer has a beam-width oif 7 or 14 deg, but it can be coupled to a telescope increasing the resolution. The expected CMB polarization is at most a part per milion. The polarimeter has been designed to be sensitive to this faint signal, and it has been optimized to improve its long term stability, observing from the ground. In this contribution the performances of the instrument are presented, together with the preliminary test and observations.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, in print on the Proc. SPIE Conf. - August 200

    TRIS II: search for CMB spectral distortions at 0.60, 0.82 and 2.5 GHz

    With the TRIS experiment we have performed absolute measurements of the sky brightness in a sky circle at ÎŽ=+42∘\delta = +42^{\circ} at the frequencies Îœ=\nu = 0.60, 0.82 and 2.5 GHz. In this paper we discuss the techniques used to separate the different contributions to the sky emission and give an evaluation of the absolute temperature of the Cosmic Microwave Background. For the black-body temperature of the CMB we get: Tcmbth=(2.837±0.129±0.066)KT_{cmb}^{th}=(2.837 \pm 0.129 \pm 0.066)K at Îœ=0.60\nu=0.60 GHz; Tcmbth=(2.803±0.051−0.300+0.430)KT_{cmb}^{th}=(2.803 \pm 0.051 ^{+0.430} _{-0.300})K at Îœ=0.82\nu=0.82 GHz; Tcmbth=(2.516±0.139±0.284)KT_{cmb}^{th}=(2.516 \pm 0.139 \pm 0.284)K at Îœ=2.5\nu=2.5 GHz. The first error bar is statistic (1σ\sigma) while the second one is systematic. These results represent a significant improvement with respect to the previous measurements. We have also set new limits to the free-free distortions, −6.3×10−6<Yff<12.6×10−6 -6.3 \times 10^{-6} < Y_{ff} < 12.6 \times 10^{-6}, and slightly improved the Bose-Einstein upper limit, âˆŁÎŒâˆŁ<6×10−5|\mu| < 6 \times 10^{-5}, both at 95% confidence level.Comment: accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa

    International audienceThe Sauris reservoir is a hydroelectric basin closed downstream by a 136 m high, double arc concrete dam. The dam is firmly anchored to a consistent rock (Dolomia dello Schlern), but the Lower Triassic clayey formations, cropping out especially in the lower part of the slopes, have made the whole catchment basin increasingly prone to landslides. In recent years, the "La Maina landslide" has opened up several joints over a surface of about 100 000 m2, displacing about 1 500 000 m3 of material. Particular attention is now being given to the evolution of the instability area, as the reservoir is located at the foot of the landslide. Under the commission of the Regional Authority for Civil Protection a numerical modelling simulation in a pseudo-time condition of the slope was developed, in order to understand the risk for transport infrastructures, for some houses and for the reservoir and to take urgent mesaures to stabilize the slope. A monitoring system consisting of four inclinometers, three wire extensometers and ten GPS bench-mark pillars was immediately set up to check on surface and deep displacements. The data collected and the geological and geomorphological evidences was used to carry out a numerical simulation. The reliability of the results was checked by comparing the model with the morphological evidence of the movement.     The wide morphological spectrum of deep (Aggressive) angiomyxoma of the vulvo-vaginal region: A clinicopathologic study of 36 cases, including recurrent tumors

    Background: Deep angiomyxoma (DAM) is currently included in the category of "specific stromal tumors of the lower female genital tract", along with angiomyofibroblastoma, cellular angiofibroma and myofibroblastoma. Given the high rate of local recurrences, it is crucial to recognize DAM from other tumors that possess indolent behaviour. In the present paper, we analyzed the morphological and immunohistochemical features of 42 surgically-resected vulvo-vaginal DAMs (36 primary and 6 recurrent lesions) in order to widen the morphological spectrum of this uncommon tumor. Methods: A series of 36 cases of surgically-resected primary vulvo-vaginal DAMs were retrospectively collected. Locally recurrent tumors were also available for six of these cases. Results: Out of the primary tumors, 25 out of 36 exhibited the classic-type morphology of DAM. In the remaining cases (11/36 cases), the following uncommon features, which sometimes coexist with one another, were observed: (i) alternating myxoid and collagenized/fibrous areas; (ii) hypercellular areas; (iii) neurofibroma-like appearance; (iv) perivascular hyalinization; (v) microcystic/reticular stromal changes; (vi) "microvascular growth pattern"; (vii) perivascular cuffing; (viii) nodular leiomyomatous differentiation; (ix) hypocellular and fibro-sclerotic stroma. Among the six locally recurrent tumors the following features were observed: (i) classic-type morphology; (ii) hypocellular fibro-sclerotic stroma; (iii) extensive perivascular hyalinization, lumen obliteration and formation of confluent nodular sclerotic masses; (iv) hypercellularity. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic cells of classic-type DAM in both primary and recurrent tumors were diffusely stained with desmin, suggesting a myofibroblastic nature; in contrast, the neoplastic cells showing elongated fibroblastic-like morphology and set in collagenized/fibrosclerotic stroma in both primary and recurrent tumors were negative or only focally stained with desmin, which is consistent with a fibroblastic profile. Conclusion: Although diagnosis of DAM is usually straightforward if typical morphology is encountered, diagnostic problems may arise when a pathologist is dealing with unusual morphological features, especially hypercellularity, extensive collagenous/fibrosclerotic stroma or neurofibroma-like appearance

    Integration of Molecular Data in the Prognostic Stratification and Management of Endometrial Carcinoma

    In the last years, the TCGA-based molecular classifier have been progressively integrated in the management of endometrial carcinoma. While molecular assays are increasingly available across pathology laboratories, the additional costs will expectedly be compensated by a reduction in overtreatments and a prevention of recurrences. The additional time might be shortened by assessing molecular markers on biopsy specimens. Retrospective data suggest that the molecular classifier will have a major impact of on the risk stratification, with many patients having their risk class down- or upstaged based on POLE mutations or p53 abnormalities, respectively. However, there are still several issues to be resolved, such as the prognostic value of the TCGA classifier in each FIGO stage, or the type of adjuvant treatment most suitable for each molecular group. Other issues regard the prognostic stratification of the mismatch repair-deficient and “no specific molecular profile” groups, which currently follows the same criteria; however, the former seems to be prognostically consistent regardless of FIGO grade and histotype, whereas the latter appears highly heterogeneous. Numerous clinical, histological, immunohistochemical and molecular markers have been proposed to refine the TCGA classification, but their prognostic value is still undefined. Hopefully, prospective data collected in the next years will help resolving these issues

    Orientational order parameters of a de Vries–type ferroelectric liquid crystal obtained by polarized Raman spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction

    The orientational order parameters 〈P2âŒȘ and 〈P4âŒȘ of the ferroelectric, de Vries–type liquid crystal 9HL have been determined in the SmA* and SmC* phases by means of polarized Raman spectroscopy, and in the SmA* phase using x-ray diffraction. Quantum density functional theory predicts Raman spectra for 9HL that are in good agreement with the observations and indicates that the strong Raman band probed in the experiment corresponds to the uniaxial, coupled vibration of the three phenyl rings along the molecular long axis. The magnitudes of the orientational order parameters obtained in the Raman and x-ray experiments differ dramatically from each other, a discrepancy that is resolved by considering that the two techniques probe the orientational distributions of different molecular axes. We have developed a systematic procedure in which we calculate the angle between these axes and rescale the orientational order parameters obtained from x-ray scattering with results that are then in good agreement with the Raman data. At least in the case of 9HL, the results obtained by both techniques support a “sugar loaf” orientational distribution in the SmA* phase with no qualitative difference to conventional smectics A.     Substantial lymph-vascular space invasion (Lvsi) as predictor of distant relapse and poor prognosis in low-risk early-stage endometrial cancer

    Objective: The aim of this study is to analyze the prognostic role of lymph-vascular space invasion (LVSI), evaluated in a semi-quantitative fashion on prognosis of early stage, low risk endometrial cancer (EC). Methods: We enrolled patients who underwent surgery for endometrial cancer between 2003 and 2018 in two referral cancer center. All patients had endometrioid EC, G1–G2, with myometrial invasion &lt;50%, and no lymph-node involvement. LVSI was analyzed in a semi-quantitative way, according to a 3-tiered scoring system in absent, focal and substantial. Results: Among 524 patients, any positive LVSI was found in 57 patients (10.9%) with focal LVSI (n=35, 6.7%) and substantial LVSI (n=22, 4.2%). Substantial LVSI was associated to higher rate of G2 (p&lt;0.001), myometrial infiltration (p=0.002) and greater tumor dimensions (p=0.014). Patients with substantial LVSI were more likely to receive adjuvant treatment (6.6% vs. 52.6%, p&lt;0.001). The 5-year OS was 99.5% in patients with absent LVSI and 70.6% in those with substantial LVSI (p&lt;0.001). The 5-year disease free survival (DFS) was 93.6% in patients with absent LVSI and 56.5% in those with substantial LVSI (p&lt;0.001). The rate of distant failures increased from 1.8% for absent LVSI to 22.7% for substantial LVSI (p=0.002). In univariate analysis substantial LVSI was the strongest predictor of poor overall survival (hazard ratio [HR]=11.9, p=0.001). Multivariate analysis showed that substantial LVSI was an independent predictive factor of both recurrence (HR=5.88, p=0.001) and distant failure (HR=10.6, p=0.006). Conclusions: Substantial LVSI represents the strongest independent risk factor for decreased survival and distant relapse, indicating a role for potential hematogenous dissemination
