Collective Interview on the History of Town Meetings
As illustrated in the introduction, the special issue ends with a ‘collective interview’ to some distinguished
scholars that have given an important contribution to the study of New England Town Meetings. The collective interview has been realized by submitting three questions to our interviewees, who responded individually in written. The text of the answers has not been edited, if not minimally. However, the editors have broken up longer individual answers in shorter parts. These have been subsequently rearranged in an effort to provide, as much as possible, a fluid structure and a degree of interaction among the different perspectives provided by our interviewees on similar issues. The final version of this interview has been edited and approved by all interviewees
Internal kinematic and physical properties in a BCD galaxy: Haro 15 in detail
We present a detailed study of the kinematic and physical properties of the
ionized gas in multiple knots of the blue compact dwarf galaxy Haro 15. Using
echelle and long slit spectroscopy data, obtained with different instruments at
Las Campanas Observatory, we study the internal kinematic and physical
conditions (electron density and temperature), ionic and total chemical
abundances of several atoms, reddening and ionization structure. Applying
direct and empirical methods for abundance determination, we perform a
comparative analysis between these regions and in their different components.
On the other hand, our echelle spectra show complex kinematics in several
conspicuous knots within the galaxy. To perform an in-depth 2D spectroscopic
study we complete this work with high spatial and spectral resolution
spectroscopy using the Integral Field Unit mode on the Gemini Multi-Object
Spectrograph instrument at the Gemini South telescope. With these data we are
able to resolve the complex kinematical structure within star forming knots in

The Carnegie Supernova Project I: methods to estimate host-galaxy reddening of stripped-envelope supernovae
We aim to improve upon contemporary methods to estimate host-galaxy reddening
of stripped-envelope (SE) supernovae (SNe). To this end the Carnegie Supernova
Project (CSP-I) SE SNe photometry data release, consisting of nearly three
dozen objects, is used to identify a minimally reddened sub-sample for each
traditionally defined spectroscopic sub-types (i.e, SNe~IIb, SNe~Ib, SNe~Ic).
Inspection of the optical and near-infrared (NIR) colors and color evolution of
the minimally reddened sub-samples reveals a high degree of homogeneity,
particularly between 0d to +20d relative to B-band maximum. This motivated the
construction of intrinsic color-curve templates, which when compared to the
colors of reddened SE SNe, yields an entire suite of optical and NIR color
excess measurements. Comparison of optical/optical vs. optical/NIR color excess
measurements indicates the majority of the CSP-I SE SNe suffer relatively low
amounts of reddening and we find evidence for different R_(V)^(host) values
among different SE SN. Fitting the color excess measurements of the seven most
reddened objects with the Fitzpatrick (1999) reddening law model provides
robust estimates of the host visual-extinction A_(V)^(host) and R_(V)^(host).
In the case of the SE SNe with relatively low amounts of reddening, a preferred
value of R_(V)^(host) is adopted for each sub-type, resulting in estimates of
A_(V)^(host) through Fitzpatrick (1999) reddening law model fits to the
observed color excess measurements. Our analysis suggests SE SNe reside in
galaxies characterized by a range of dust properties. We also find evidence SNe
Ic are more likely to occur in regions characterized by larger R_(V)^(host)
values compared to SNe IIb/Ib and they also tend to suffer more extinction.
These findings are consistent with work in the literature suggesting SNe Ic

SB9: The Ninth Catalogue of Spectroscopic Binary Orbits
The Ninth Catalogue of Spectroscopic Binary Orbits
(http://sb9.astro.ulb.ac.be) continues the series of compilations of
spectroscopic orbits carried out over the past 35 years by Batten and
collaborators. As of 2004 May 1st, the new Catalogue holds orbits for 2,386
systems. Some essential differences between this catalogue and its predecessors
are outlined and three straightforward applications are presented: (1)
Completeness assessment: period distribution of SB1s and SB2s; (2) Shortest

Spectroscopy of superluminous supernova host galaxies. A preference of hydrogen-poor events for extreme emission line galaxies
Superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) are very bright explosions that were only
discovered recently and that show a preference for occurring in faint dwarf
galaxies. Understanding why stellar evolution yields different types of stellar
explosions in these environments is fundamental in order to both uncover the
elusive progenitors of SLSNe and to study star formation in dwarf galaxies. In
this paper, we present the first results of our project to study SUperluminous
Supernova Host galaxIES, focusing on the sample for which we have obtained
spectroscopy. We show that SLSNe-I and SLSNe-R (hydrogen-poor) often (~50% in
our sample) occur in a class of galaxies that is known as Extreme Emission Line
Galaxies (EELGs). The probability of this happening by chance is negligible and
we therefore conclude that the extreme environmental conditions and the SLSN
phenomenon are related. In contrast, SLSNe-II (hydrogen-rich) occur in more
massive, more metal-rich galaxies with softer radiation fields. Therefore, if
SLSNe-II constitute a uniform class, their progenitor systems are likely
different from those of H-poor SLSNe. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are, on average,
not found in as extreme environments as H-poor SLSNe. We propose that H-poor
SLSNe result from the very first stars exploding in a starburst, even earlier
than GRBs. This might indicate a bottom-light initial mass function in these
systems. SLSNe present a novel method of selecting candidate EELGs independent

Comprehensive Observations of the Bright and Energetic Type Iax SN 2012Z: Interpretation as a Chandrasekhar Mass White Dwarf Explosion
We present UV through NIR broad-band photometry, and optical and NIR
spectroscopy of Type Iax supernova 2012Z. The data set consists of both early
and late-time observations, including the first late phase NIR spectrum
obtained for a spectroscopically classified SN Iax. Simple model calculations
of its bolometric light curve suggest SN 2012Z produced ~0.3 M_sun of (56)Ni,
ejected about a Chandrasekhar mass of material, and had an explosion energy of
~10^51 erg, making it one of the brightest and most energetic SN Iax yet
observed. The late phase NIR spectrum of SN 2012Z is found to broadly resemble
similar epoch spectra of normal SNe Ia; however, like other SNe Iax,
corresponding visual-wavelength spectra differ substantially compared to all
supernova types. Constraints from the distribution of IMEs, e.g. silicon and
magnesium, indicate that the outer ejecta did not experience significant mixing
during or after burning, and the late phase NIR line profiles suggests most of
the (56)Ni is produced during high density burning. The various observational
properties of SN 2012Z are found to be consistent with the theoretical
expectations of a Chandrasekhar mass white dwarf progenitor that experiences a
pulsational delayed detonation, which produced several tenths of a solar mass
of (56)Ni during the deflagration burning phase and little (or no) (56)Ni
during the detonation phase. Within this scenario only a moderate amount of
Rayleigh-Taylor mixing occurs both during the deflagration and fallback phase
of the pulsation, and the layered structure of the IMEs is a product of the
subsequent denotation phase. The fact that the SNe Iax population does not
follow a tight brightness-decline relation similar to SNe Ia can then be
understood in the framework of variable amounts of mixing during pulsational
rebound and variable amounts of (56)Ni production during the early subsonic

ASASSN-15lh: A Highly Super-Luminous Supernova
We report the discovery of ASASSN-15lh (SN 2015L), which we interpret as the
most luminous supernova yet found. At redshift z = 0.2326, ASASSN-15lh reached
an absolute magnitude of M_{u,AB} = -23.5+/-0.1 and bolometric luminosity L_bol
= (2.2+/-0.2)x 10^45 ergs s^-1, which is more than twice as luminous as any
previously known supernova. It has several major features characteristic of the
hydrogen-poor super-luminous supernovae (SLSNe-I), whose energy sources and
progenitors are currently poorly understood. In contrast to most previously
known SLSNe-I that reside in star-forming dwarf galaxies, ASASSN-15lh appears
to be hosted by a luminous galaxy (M_K ~ -25.5) with little star formation. In
the 4 months since first detection, ASASSN-15lh radiated (1.1+/- 0.2)x10^52

Performance of wood treated with prospective organic surface protectants upon outdoor exposure: FTIR spectroscopic analysis of weathered surfaces
Visual appeal of wood is as important as its
structural integrity in outdoor applications. Discoloration
and checking of wood favor the utilization of alternative
materials for outdoor cladding and decking. Lignin depolymerization
is one of the critical processes leading to
weathering. In the present paper, the potential of different
classes of surface protection agents has been assessed on
loblolly pine ( Pinus taeda ) impregnated with water repellents,
organic UV inhibitors, and an organic biocide. The
treated samples were exposed to predetermined doses
of solar radiation in Eastern Oregon, and the chemical
changes occurring on the surfaces were evaluated by FTIR
spectroscopy. After 1-year exposure, lignin loss was complete
on all surfaces; however, some treatments provided
longer term protection than others. Organic UV light inhibitors
were most effective in this regard. A petroleumbased
water repellent with a melting point of 54 – 58 ° C also

A multispectral view of the periodic events in eta Carinae
A full description of the 5.5-yr low excitation events in Eta Carinae is
presented. We show that they are not as simple and brief as previously thought,
but a combination of two components. The first, the 'slow variation' component,
is revealed by slow changes in the ionization level of circumstellar matter
across the whole cycle and is caused by gradual changes in the wind-wind
collision shock-cone orientation, angular opening and gaseous content. The
second, the 'collapse' component, is restricted to around the minimum, and is
due to a temporary global collapse of the wind-wind collision shock. High
energy photons (E > 16 eV) from the companion star are strongly shielded,
leaving the Weigelt objects at low ionization state for >6 months. High energy
phenomena are sensitive only to the 'collapse', low energy only to the 'slow
variation' and intermediate energies to both components. Simple eclipses and
mechanisms effective only near periastron (e.g., shell ejection or accretion
onto the secondary star) cannot account for the whole 5.5-yr cycle.
We find anti-correlated changes in the intensity and the radial velocity of P
Cygni absorption profiles in FeII 6455 and HeI 7065 lines, indicating that the
former is associated to the primary and the latter to the secondary star. We
present a set of light curves representative of the whole spectrum, useful for
