    On the Robustness of NK-Kauffman Networks Against Changes in their Connections and Boolean Functions

    NK-Kauffman networks {\cal L}^N_K are a subset of the Boolean functions on N Boolean variables to themselves, \Lambda_N = {\xi: \IZ_2^N \to \IZ_2^N}. To each NK-Kauffman network it is possible to assign a unique Boolean function on N variables through the function \Psi: {\cal L}^N_K \to \Lambda_N. The probability {\cal P}_K that \Psi (f) = \Psi (f'), when f' is obtained through f by a change of one of its K-Boolean functions (b_K: \IZ_2^K \to \IZ_2), and/or connections; is calculated. The leading term of the asymptotic expansion of {\cal P}_K, for N \gg 1, turns out to depend on: the probability to extract the tautology and contradiction Boolean functions, and in the average value of the distribution of probability of the Boolean functions; the other terms decay as {\cal O} (1 / N). In order to accomplish this, a classification of the Boolean functions in terms of what I have called their irreducible degree of connectivity is established.     Los estudiantes de secundaria pueden escoger compañeros como nuevos amigos utilizando un repertorio de modalidades. Pueden querer activamente crear nuevas amistades, utilizar la estructura existente de la red y/o utilizar la información, escasa y a menudo errónea, sobre los "candidatos". En este artículo teórico argumentamos que dichas modalidades de selección no deben ser estudiadas como resultado de reglas generales tal y como se viene haciendo en los estudios sobre redes sociales. En concreto, afirmamos que las preferencias relativas al tamaño de las redes, el nivel de información sobre los atributos de los compañeros de clase y la pertenencia a grupos pueden ser distintas para cada alumno y, por ello, también sus modalidalidades de selección pueden ser distintas.     Ising transition driven by frustration in a 2D classical model with SU(2) symmetry

    We study the thermal properties of the classical antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with both nearest (J1J_1) and next-nearest (J2J_2) exchange couplings on the square lattice by extensive Monte Carlo simulations. We show that, for J2/J1>1/2J_2/J_1 > 1/2 , thermal fluctuations give rise to an effective Z2Z_2 symmetry leading to a {\it finite-temperature} phase transition. We provide strong numerical evidence that this transition is in the 2D Ising universality class, and that Tc0T_c\to 0 with an infinite slope when J2/J11/2J_2/J_1\to 1/2.Comment: 4 pages with 4 figure

    Air temperature variability over three glaciers in the Ortles-Cevedale (Italian Alps): Effects of glacier fragmentation, comparison of calculation methods, and impacts on mass balance modeling

    Glacier mass balance models rely on accurate spatial calculation of input data, in particular air temperature. Lower temperatures (the so-called glacier cooling effect), and lower temperature variability (the so-called glacier damping effect) generally occur over glaciers, compared to ambient conditions. These effects, which depend on the geometric characteristics of glaciers and display a high spatial and temporal variability, have been mostly investigated on medium- to large-size glaciers so far, while observations on smaller ice bodies are scarce. Using a dataset from 8 on-glacier and 4 off-glacier weather stations, collected in summer 2010 and 2011, we analyzed the air temperature distribution variability and wind regime over three different glaciers in the Ortles-Cevedale. The magnitude of the cooling effect and the occurrence of katabatic boundary layer (KBL) processes showed remarkable differences among the three ice bodies, highlighting suggesting the likely existence of important reinforcing mechanisms during glacier decay and disintegration. None of the methods proposed in the literature for calculating on-glacier temperature from off-glacier data fully reproduced our observations. Among them, the more physically-based procedure of Greuell and B\uf6hm [1998] provided the best overall results where the KBL prevail, but it was not effective elsewhere (i.e. on smaller ice bodies and close to the glacier margins). The accuracy of air temperature estimations strongly impacted the results from a mass balance model which was applied to the three investigated glaciers. Most importantly, even small temperature deviations caused distortions in parameter calibration, thus compromising the model generalizability

    Effective conductivity of inertial flows through porous media

    We study two-dimensional incompressible inertial flows through porous media. At core (small) scale, we prove that the constitutive, nonlinear model can be rewritten into a linear one by means of a new parameter K* which encompasses all the inertial effects. In natural (large-scale) formations, K* is erratically changing, and we analytically compute its counterpart, which is coined generalized effective conductivity, by the self-consistent approach (SCA). In spite of its approximate nature, the SCA leads to simple results that are in good agreement with Monte Carlo simulations

    We propose a phenomenological model where the gravitational interaction between dark matter and baryons is suppressed on small, subgalactic scales. We describe the gravitational force by adding a Yukawa contribution to the standard Newtonian potential and show that this interaction scheme is effectively suggested by the available observations of the inner rotation curves of small mass galaxies. Besides helping in interpreting the cuspy profile of dark matter halos observed in N-body simulations, this potential regulates the quantity of baryons within halos of different masses.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, final versio

    Massive star cluster formation and evolution in tidal dwarf galaxies

Dwarf starburst galaxies are efficient at forming young massive clusters with similar masses as globular clusters and may hold the key to understanding their formation. We study star cluster formation in a tidal debris - including the vicinity of three tidal dwarf galaxies - in a massive gas dominated collisional ring around NGC~5291. These dwarfs have physical parameters which differ significantly from local starbursting dwarfs. They are gas-rich, highly turbulent, have a gas metallicity already enriched up to half-solar, and are expected to be free of dark matter. The aim is to study massive star cluster formation in this as yet unexplored type of environment. We use imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope using broadband filters covering the wavelength range from the near-ultraviolet to the near-infrared. We determine the masses and ages of the cluster candidates by using the spectral energy distribution-fitting code CIGALE, carefully considering age-extinction degeneracy effects on the estimation of the physical parameters. We find that the tidal dwarf galaxies in the ring of NGC 5291 are forming star clusters with an average efficiency of 40%\sim40\%, comparable to blue compact dwarf galaxies. We also find massive star clusters for which the photometry suggests that they were formed at the very birth of the tidal dwarf galaxies and have survived for several hundred million years. Therefore our study shows that extended tidal dwarf galaxies and compact clusters may be formed simultaneously. In the specific case observed here, the young star clusters are not massive enough to survive for a Hubble time. However one may speculate that similar objects at higher redshift, with higher star formation rate, might form some of the long lived globular clusters.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

    Equilibrium and off-equilibrium simulations of the 4d Gaussian spin glass

    In this paper we study the on and off-equilibrium properties of the four dimensional Gaussian spin glass. In the static case we determine with more precision that in previous simulations both the critical temperature as well as the critical exponents. In the off-equilibrium case we settle the general form of the autocorrelation function, and show that is possible to obtain dynamically, for the first time, a value for the order parameter.Comment: 16 pages and 13 figures, uses epsfig.sty and rotate.sty.
