Extragalactic Source Counts in the Spitzer 24-micron Band: What Do We Expect From ISOCAM 15-micron Data and Models?
The comparison between the new Spitzer data at 24 micron and the previous
ISOCAM data at 15 micron is a key tool to understand galaxy properties and
evolution in the infrared and to interpret the observed number counts, since
the combination of Spitzer with the ISO cosmological surveys provides for the
first time the direct view of the Universe in the Infrared up to z~2. We
present the prediction in the Spitzer 24-micron band of a phenomenological
model for galaxy evolution derived from the 15-micron data. Without any ``a
posteriori'' update, the model predictions seem to agree well with the recently
published 24-micron extragalactic source counts, suggesting that the peak in
the 24-micron counts is dominated by ``starburst'' galaxies like those detected
by ISOCAM at 15 micron, but at higher redshifts (1 < z < 2 instead of 0.5 < z <

Advanced digital modulation: Communication techniques and monolithic GaAs technology
Communications theory and practice are merged with state-of-the-art technology in IC fabrication, especially monolithic GaAs technology, to examine the general feasibility of a number of advanced technology digital transmission systems. Satellite-channel models with (1) superior throughput, perhaps 2 Gbps; (2) attractive weight and cost; and (3) high RF power and spectrum efficiency are discussed. Transmission techniques possessing reasonably simple architectures capable of monolithic fabrication at high speeds were surveyed. This included a review of amplitude/phase shift keying (APSK) techniques and the continuous-phase-modulation (CPM) methods, of which MSK represents the simplest case
Pion scattering in Wilson ChPT
We compute the scattering amplitude for pion scattering in Wilson chiral
perturbation theory for two degenerate quark flavors. We consider two different
regimes where the quark mass m is of order (i) a\Lambda_QCD^2 and (ii)
a^2\Lambda_QCD^3. Analytic expressions for the scattering lengths in all three
isospin channels are given. As a result of the O(a^2) terms the I=0 and I=2
scattering lengths do not vanish in the chiral limit. Moreover, additional
chiral logarithms proportional to a^2\ln M_{\pi}^2 are present in the one-loop
results for regime (ii). These contributions significantly modify the familiar

Aggression and the termination of "rituals": a new variant of the escape function for challenging behaviour?
Aggression and stereotyped behaviors are not uncommon among people with intellectual disabilities and they are often treated separately as operant behaviors. In this single case study, it is argued that the function of a young woman's aggressive behavior appeared to be that of avoiding or escaping the termination of a chain of complex stereotyped behavior (or "ritual"). She became aggressive only when this chain of stereotyped behavior was terminated and the aggression appeared to extinguish when it no longer led to escape from the termination of the "ritual". It is suggested that this is an example of a complex interaction between two behaviors and that it illustrates the need for very careful analysis of the functions of challenging behavior. Furthermore, it is proposed that the lengthening list of variables already documented as determinants of challenging behavior (provision of attention (verbal and physical), mechanical restraint, sensory or tangible events, escape from demands or from social attention, denials, escape from intrusive medical procedures, escape from task difficulty) be lengthened to include the possibility of escape from (or avoidance of) the interruption of a chain of complex stereotyped behavior or "ritual". The motivating operation and negatively reinforced problem behavior. A systematic review.
The concept of motivational operations exerts an increasing influence on the understanding and assessment of problem behavior in people with intellectual and developmental disability. In this systematic review of 59 methodologically robust studies of the influence of motivational operations in negative reinforcement paradigms in this population, we identify themes related to situational and biological variables that have implications for assessment, intervention, and further research. There is now good evidence that motivational operations of differing origins influence negatively reinforced problem behavior, and that these might be subject to manipulation to facilitate favorable outcomes. There is also good evidence that some biological variables warrant consideration in assessment procedures as they predispose the person's behavior to be influenced by specific motivational operations. The implications for assessment and intervention are made explicit with reference to variables that are open to manipulation or that require further research and conceptualization within causal models
Crystal structure of the catalytic fragment of murine poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase-2.
Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP-1) has become an important pharmacological target in the treatment of cancer due to its cellular role as a 'DNA-strand break sensor', which leads in part to resistance to some existing chemo- and radiological treatments. Inhibitors have now been developed which prevent PARP-1 from synthesizing poly(ADP-ribose) in response to DNA-breaks and potentiate the cytotoxicity of DNA damaging agents. However, with the recent discoveries of PARP-2, which has a similar DNA-damage dependent catalytic activity, and additional members containing the 'PARP catalytic' signature, the isoform selectivity and resultant pharmacological effects of existing inhibitors are brought into question. We present here the crystal structure of the catalytic fragment of murine PARP-2, at 2.8 A resolution, and compare this to the catalytic fragment of PARP-1, with an emphasis on providing a possible framework for rational drug design in order to develop future isoform-specific inhibitors
The Power Spectrum of the PSC Redshift Survey
We measure the redshift-space power spectrum P(k) for the recently completed
IRAS Point Source Catalogue (PSC) redshift survey, which contains 14500
galaxies over 84% of the sky with 60 micron flux >= 0.6 Jansky. Comparison with
simulations shows that our estimated errors on P(k) are realistic, and that
systematic errors due to the finite survey volume are small for wavenumbers k
>~ 0.03 h Mpc^-1. At large scales our power spectrum is intermediate between
those of the earlier QDOT and 1.2 Jansky surveys, but with considerably smaller
error bars; it falls slightly more steeply to smaller scales. We have fitted
families of CDM-like models using the Peacock-Dodds formula for non-linear
evolution; the results are somewhat sensitive to the assumed small-scale
velocity dispersion \sigma_V. Assuming a realistic \sigma_V \approx 300 km/s
yields a shape parameter \Gamma ~ 0.25 and normalisation b \sigma_8 ~ 0.75; if
\sigma_V is as high as 600 km/s then \Gamma = 0.5 is only marginally excluded.
There is little evidence for any `preferred scale' in the power spectrum or
non-Gaussian behaviour in the distribution of large-scale power.Comment: Latex, uses mn.sty, 14 pages including 11 Postscript figures.

On the nature of the ISO-selected sources in the ELAIS S2 region
We have studied the optical, near-IR and radio properties of a complete
sample of 43 sources detected at 15-micron in one of the deeper ELAIS
repeatedly observed region. The extragalactic objects in this sample have
15-micron flux densities in the range 0.4-10 mJy, where the source counts start
diverging from no evolution models. About 90% of the sources (39 out of 43)
have optical counterparts brighter than I=21 mag. Eight of these 39 sources
have been identified with stars on the basis of imaging data, while for another
22 sources we have obtained optical spectroscopy, reaching a high
identification percentage (30/43, ~70%). All but one of the 28 sources with
flux density > 0.7 mJy are identified. Most of the extragalactic objects are
normal spiral or starburst galaxies at moderate redshift (z_med~0.2); four
objects are Active Galactic Nuclei. We have used the 15-micron, H_alpha and
1.4-GHz luminosities as indicators of star-formation rate and we have compared
the results obtained in these three bands. While 1.4-GHz and 15-micron
estimates are in good agreement, showing that our galaxies are forming stars at
a median rate of ~40 Mo/yr, the raw H_alpha-based estimates are a factor ~5-10
lower and need a mean correction of ~2 mag to be brought on the same scale as
the other two indicators. A correction of ~2 mag is consistent with what
suggested by the Balmer decrements H_alpha/H_beta and by the optical colours.
Moreover, it is intermediate between the correction found locally for normal
spirals and the correction needed for high-luminosity 15-micron objects,
suggesting that the average extinction suffered by galaxies increases with

Rigorous confidence intervals for critical probabilities
We use the method of Balister, Bollobas and Walters to give rigorous 99.9999%
confidence intervals for the critical probabilities for site and bond
percolation on the 11 Archimedean lattices. In our computer calculations, the
emphasis is on simplicity and ease of verification, rather than obtaining the
best possible results. Nevertheless, we obtain intervals of width at most
0.0005 in all cases
