    Restoring an eroded legitimacy: the adaptation of nonfinancial disclosure after a scandal and the risk of hypocrisy

    Purpose \u2013 This study contributes to the literature on hypocrisy in corporate social responsibility by investigating how organizations adapt their nonfinancial disclosure after a social, environmental or governance scandal. Design/methodology/approach \u2013 The present research employs content analysis of nonfinancial disclosures by 11 organizations during a 3-year timespan to investigate how they responded to major scandals in terms of social, environmental and sustainability reporting and a content analysis of independent counter accounts to detect the presence of views that contrast with the corporate disclosure and suggest hypocritical behaviors. Findings \u2013 Four patterns in the adaptation of reporting \u2013 genuine, allusive, evasive, indifferent \u2013 emerge from information collected on scandals and socially responsible actions. The type of scandal and cultural factors can influence the response to a scandal, as environmental and social scandal can attract more scrutiny than financial scandals. Companies exposed to environmental and social scandals are more likely to disclose information about the scandal and receive more coverage by external parties in the form of counter accounts. Originality/value \u2013 Using a theoretical framework based on legitimacy theory and organizational hypocrisy, the present research contributes to the investigation of the adaptation of reporting when a scandal occurs and during its aftermath

    Stakeholder engagement in green place branding:a focus on user-generated content

    The purpose of this research is to investigate how the green image of a city can affect potential visitors' attitude toward the city in the context of user‐generated content. The study adopts a 2 × 2 experimental design in which the greenness of the city image and the social distance between the users and the authors of social media content are examined. The results demonstrate that green image has a significant effect on attitudes toward cities. Moreover, the effects of social media content vary according to the perceived social distance between the author of the post and potential visitors. This study contributes to the literature by assessing the role that social media content plays in place branding and communication. Furthermore, it provides relevant insights on how institutions should enhance the sustainable resources of cities with their environmental policy and encourage the generation of content from various stakeholders to contribute to the development of a city's image

    The presence and localization of apelin in the sheep abomasum: impact of diets characterized by different chemical composition

    The apelinergic system is a complex system including the apelin peptide (AP), initially isolated in 1998 from bovine stomach homogenates and its receptor, named APJ receptor. The apelin peptide is extensively expressed in several human and laboratory animal organs (heart, lung, brain, mammary gland). Between the different roles hypothesize for apelin there are also the control of blood pressure and the stimulation of drinking behavior in rats. Recently its expression was also evidenced in the basal glandular portion of the stomach in laboratory animals, allowing to hypothesize its intervention in the control of acid secretion. No data concerning its presence and distribution in the abomasums of the sheep are present at the moment. So, we decided to test the presence and distribution of apelin in the abomasums of the sheep and the possible existence of a variability as a consequence of the different water content of the diet.The experiment was conducted using 50 sheep fed on Apennine semi-natural pasture for two experimental periods: in the first period the animals were fed for 45 days on the pasture at the maximum of its flowering; in the second one the animals were fed on the same pasture until its maximum dryness but the half of them daily received adiet integration of cereals. At the end of each experimental period, some animals were regularly slaughtered at the local abattoir, the abomasum specimens were immediately removed and some of them processed for routine tissue-embedding preparation while other for molecular biology. The immunohistochemical reaction was visualized on 5 ”m serial sections, using a primary rabbit polyclonal antibody (anti-AP), the avidin-biotin-complex and the DAB as the chromogen. The immunohistochemical study showed a peculiar immunoreaction for AP in the abomasum of the animals examined. In particular, a immunopositive reaction for AP was evident in the cells of the basal third of the tubular glands and they were mainly of the closed type, with an oval or round shape and contained many perinuclear granules. The immunopositive reactions didn’t evidence any difference both in the localization and in the number of the positive cells, between the different groups. Immuno-positivity for AP was not observed in any other histological structure or in the sections utilized as negative controls.These results allow us to conclude that AP is present in the glandular tissue of the abomasums of the sheep, as observed in laboratory animals, with a peculiar cytoplasmatic localization and to hypothesize that AP is involved in the control of gastric secretion, probably via APJ receptor. The AP expression in the stomach doesn’t seem to be influenced by the water content of the diets with a positivity that appears to be localized in the same glandular portion between the different animal groups

    Dietary integration with oregano (Origanum vulgare L.) essential oil improves growth rate and oxidative status in outdoor, but not indoor, reared pigs

    The effects of a diet supplemented with oregano essential oil on performance, oxidative status, pork quality traits and sensorial properties were evaluated. In two studies, 72 pigs in indoor or outdoor conditions were assigned to either a control diet or an identical diet supplemented with 0.2% oregano essential oil. Pigs reared outdoor showed lower live weight, average daily gain and average gain:feed ratio compared to indoor pigs. The oregano supplementation improved the growth performance of the outdoor‐ but not the indoor‐reared animals. The serum oxidative status was influenced by the diet. A higher oxidative stability was observed in the oregano‐supplemented groups. As for the rearing conditions, the data suggest that after an initial adapting period, the free‐range farming systems could be better tolerated by pigs. Meat derived from pigs reared outdoor showed higher pH and a* values. Lightness was influenced by both the diet and the rearing conditions. The control group reared indoor showed shear force values higher than both supplemented groups, while no differences were detected with the control group reared outdoor. In the consumer test performed under blind conditions, the oregano groups achieved higher consistency scores compared with the control. Under informed conditions, the meat derived from the oregano‐supplemented pigs reared outdoor received the highest scores for consistency and overall liking regardless of the rearing system. The same result for the overall liking score was obtained in the expectation test. The data obtained showed that dietary oregano essential oil can be effective in reducing performance losses due to the outdoor‐rearing system, increasing the oxidative status of the animal and oxidative stability of the meat, without modifying the meat quality traits and improving consumer perceptions of the meat quality

    Abstract The effect of a dietary oregano aqueous extract on meat fatty acid profile, quality, and consumer acceptance in chickens fed a diet rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) was evaluated in 3 consecutive trials. For each trial, 171 day-old Ross 308 chicks were randomly divided in replicates of 19 birds each and assigned to one of 3 experimental diets: 1) basal control diet, 2) basal diet supplemented with 0.2 g/kg of oregano aqueous extract, and 3) basal diet supplemented with 150 ppm of vitamin E (as positive control). To better analyze the antioxidant activity of both oregano and vitamin E, all the experimental diets were enriched with a fatty acid supplement consisting in a mixture of PUFA at the same dose (1.16 %) in both starter and finisher feeds.     Tobacco vs. electronic cigarettes: absence of harm reduction after six years of follow-up

    OBJECTIVE: Information on the long-term safety of electronic cigarettes (e-cig) is still limited. We report the results after six years of follow-up of the first observational study assessing e-cig long-term effectiveness and safety. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Participants were adults who smoked ≄1 tobacco cigarette/day (tobacco smokers); or used any type of e-cig inhaling ≄50 puffs weekly (e-cig users); or used both (dual users). Participants were contacted directly or by phone and/or internet interviews. Hospital discharge abstract data and carbon monoxide level tests were also used. RESULTS: Data were available for 228 e-cig users (all ex-smokers), 469 tobacco smokers, 215 dual users. A possibly smoking-related disease (PSRD) was recorded in 90 subjects (9.9%); 11 deceased (1.2%). No differences were observed across groups in PSRD rates, with minor changes in self-reported health. Among e-cig users, 64.0% remained tobacco abstinent. Dual users and tobacco smokers did not significantly differ in the rate of cessation of tobacco (38.6% vs. 33.9%, respectively) and all products (23.7% vs. 26.4%). A comparable decrease in daily cigarettes was also observed. 39.5% of the sample switched at least once (tobacco smokers: 15.1%; dual users: 83.3%). CONCLUSIONS: After six years, no evidence of harm reduction was found among e-cig or dual users. The complete switch to e-cig might support tobacco quitters remain abstinent, but the use of e-cig in addition to tobacco did not improve smoking cessation or reduction

    Treatment with ACE inhibitors or ARBs and risk of severe/lethal COVID-19: a meta-analysis

    Objective: It has been hypothesised that the use of ACE inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) might either increase or reduce the risk of severe or lethal COVID-19. The findings from the available observational studies varied, and summary estimates are urgently needed to elucidate whether these drugs should be suspended during the pandemic, or patients and physicians should be definitely reassured. This meta-analysis of adjusted observational data aimed to summarise the existing evidence on the association between these medications and severe/lethal COVID-19. Methods: We searched MedLine, Scopus and preprint repositories up to 8 June 2020 to retrieve cohort or case-control studies comparing the risk of severe/fatal COVID-19 (either mechanical ventilation, intensive care unit admission or death), among hypertensive subjects treated with: (1) ACE inhibitors, (2) ARBs and (3) both, versus untreated subjects. Data were combined using a random-effect generic inverse variance approach. Results: Ten studies, enrolling 9890 hypertensive subjects were included in the analyses. Compared with untreated subjects, those using either ACE inhibitors or ARBs showed a similar risk of severe or lethal COVID-19 (summary OR: 0.90; 95% CI 0.65 to 1.26 for ACE inhibitors; 0.92; 95% CI 0.75 to 1.12 for ARBs). The results did not change when both drugs were considered together, when death was the outcome and excluding the studies with significant, divergent results. Conclusion: The present meta-analysis strongly supports the recommendation of several scientific societies to continue ARBs or ACE inhibitors for all patients, unless otherwise advised by their physicians who should thus be reassured

    Different studies in the last years have focused on use of natural compounds from herbs and spices as an alternative to synthetic additives in order to avoid the growing problem of antibiotic resistance. Among officinal plants Origanum vulgare L., belonging to Lamiaceae family, has been shown to possess antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antiparasitic, antiviral, anti-hyperglycemic, anti-cholinesterase, diaphoretic, carminative, antispasmodic and analgesic activities, which are mainly attributed to its components carvacrol, limonene, gamma-caryophyllene, rhocymenene, camphor, linalol, alpha-pinene and thymol. Among oregano properties, the antioxidant and the antibacterial ones are of special interest. Oregano is also able to induce a higher glycoconjugate production. Secretion glycoconjugates cover the intestinal mucosae creating a continuous gel layer, which performs various functions: lubrication, barrier for certain low molecular weight solutes, proteolytic degradation and a barrier for microorganisms and parasites. On the basis of above considerations, this work is aimed to evaluate the effects of oregano aqueous extract (OAE) dietary supplementation on pig gut complex carbohydrates, detected by conventional histochemistry, and oxidative stress, using as target molecule Bcl-2 Associate X protein (BAX). Glycohistochemical and immunohistochemical treatments were carried out on four gut tracts: duodenum, ileum, caecum and colon. Glycohistochemistry was performed by staining with Periodic acid-Schiff (PAS), Alcian blue (AB) pH 2.5, AB-PAS, AB pH 1, AB pH 0.5, low iron diamine, high iron diamine. Adjacent serial sections were pre-treated with Sialidase V before staining with AB pH 2.5 preceded or not by saponification with 1% KOH in 70% ethanol to remove the acetyl groups. Positive histochemical responses were found at goblet cell level in all examined gut tracts; duodenal glands were also reactive. The data analysis evidenced significant differences to the histochemical treatment reactivity between control and oregano supplemented groups. BAX immunostaining decreased in oregano supplemented group. Our results showed that oregano aqueous extract supplementation improves the production of the glycoconjugates able to enhance the protection of the pig intestinal mucosae; in addition, it reduced BAX immunostaining, suggesting an enhanced antioxidant action in oregano supplemented group. Finding from this experiment could be useful for carrying out studies aimed to reduce antibiotic use and prevent antimicrobial resistance, enhancing endogenous defence ability
