    Clinical study of cervicogenic headache

    The cervicogenic headache was studied to get a deeper insight into the pathogenetic mechanisms, and clinical presentation forms. Material and Methods. Eleven female patients, ranging from 34 to 81 years-old, with cervicogenic headaches, were studied and correlated with NMR images of the cervical spine. Results. Intense neck pain irradiated to parietal, occipital, temporal regions, and shoulders were correlated with NMR images of the degenerated cervical spine. Also, lumbar spine pathology, osteoporosis, gallstones, and cholecystitis were found. The following associated neurological, neurobehavioral, and metabolic diseases comorbidities were observed, such as blood hypertension, diabetes, obesity, hypothyroidism, partial epilepsy, tremor, familial stress, memory, sleep disorders, and dizziness. Also, we found mixed cervicogenic headaches and migraines in 50% of cases studied. Conclusion. The headache and the associated images of cervical pathology have been clinically interpreted as cardinal signs of cervicogenic headache. A mixed cervicogenic mixed type was observed

    Anisotropic magnetotransport realized in doped hematite

    Conventional antiferromagnetic materials have long been recognized for their time-reversal symmetry, resulting in a zero anomalous Hall coefficient. However, a paradigm shift occurs when examining easy-axis antiferromagnets and their spin-flop transition. This transition introduces a magnetic canted moment, leading to the emergence of a non-zero anomalous Hall signal and the generation of a non-dissipative transversal current. While high symmetry systems typically manifest an isotropic Hall effect, our study unveils the extraordinary behavior exhibited by hematite that becomes conductive due to small Ti doping. We investigate the magnetotransport in Titanium-doped hematite, uncovering a highly pronounced and unconventional symmetry. Notably, this effect displays a remarkable dependence on the crystal orientation of the material. We establish a compelling correlation between our experimental observations and the predicted anomalous Hall effect in altermagnets through symmetry analysis. This study expands our understanding of the Hall effect in antiferromagnetic materials and sheds light on the intricate interplay between crystal orientation and unconventional Hall phenomena

    Viral and Cellular factors leading to the Loss of CD4 Homeostasis in HIV-1 Viremic Nonprogressors

    Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) viremic nonprogressors (VNPs) represent a very rare HIV-1 extreme phenotype. VNPs are characterized by persistent high plasma viremia and maintenance of CD41 T-cell counts in the absence of treatment. However, the causes of nonpathogenic HIV-1 infection in VNPs remain elusive. Here, we identified for the first time two VNPs who experienced the loss of CD41 homeostasis (LoH) after more than 13 years. We characterized in deep detail viral and host factors associated with the LoH and compared with standard VNPs and healthy controls. The viral factors determined included HIV-1 coreceptor usage and replicative capacity. Changes in CD41 and CD81 T-cell activation, maturational phenotype, and expression of CCR5 and CXCR6 in CD41 T-cells were also evaluated as host-related factors. Consistently, we determined a switch in HIV-1 coreceptor use to CXCR4 concomitant with an increase in replicative capacity at the LoH for the two VNPs. Moreover, we delineated an increase in the frequency of HLA-DR1CD381 CD41 and CD81 T cells and traced the augment of naive T-cells upon polyclonal activation with LoH. Remarkably, very low and stable levels of CCR5 and CXCR6 expression in CD41 T-cells were measured over time. Overall, our results demonstrated HIV-1 evolution toward highly pathogenic CXCR4 strains in the context of very limited and stable expression of CCR5 and CXCR6 in CD41 T cells as potential drivers of LoH in VNPs. These data bring novel insights into the correlates of nonpathogenic HIV1 infection. Importance: The mechanism behind nonpathogenic human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection remains poorly understood, mainly because of the very low frequency of viremic nonprogressors (VNPs). Here, we report two cases of VNPs who experienced the loss of CD41 T-cell homeostasis (LoH) after more than 13 years of HIV-1 infection. The deep characterization of viral and host factors supports the contribution of viral and host factors to the LoH in VNPs. Thus, HIV-1 evolution toward highly replicative CXCR4 strains together with changes in T-cell activation and maturational phenotypes were found. Moreover, we measured very low and stable levels of CCR5 and CXCR6 in CD41 T-cells over time.     Immunoescape of HIV-1 in Env-EL9 CD8 + T cell response restricted by HLA-B*14:02 in a Non progressor who lost twenty-seven years of HIV-1 control

    Background: Long-Term Non-Progressors (LTNPs) are untreated Human Immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infected individuals able to control disease progression for prolonged periods. However, the LTNPs status is temporary, as viral load increases followed by decreases in CD4 + T-cell counts. Control of HIV-1 infection in LTNPs viremic controllers, have been associated with effective immunodominant HIV-1 Gag-CD8 + T-cell responses restricted by protective HLA-B alleles. Individuals carrying HLA-B*14:02 control HIV-1 infection is related to an immunodominant Env-CD8 + T-cell response. Limited data are available on the contribution of HLA-B*14:02 CD8 + T -cells in LTNPs. Results: In this study, we performed a virological and immunological detailed analysis of an HLA-B*14:02 LNTP individual that lost viral control (LVC) 27 years after HIV-1 diagnosis. We analysed viral evolution and immune escape in HLA-B*14:02 restricted CD8 + T -cell epitopes and identified viral evolution at the Env-EL9 epitope selecting the L592R mutation. By IFN-γ ELISpot and immune phenotype, we characterized HLA- B*14:02 HIV-1 CD8 + T cell responses targeting, Gag-DA9 and Env-EL9 epitopes before and after LVC. We observed an immunodominant response against the Env-EL9 epitope and a decreased of the CD8 T + cell response over time with LVC. Loss of Env-EL9 responses was concomitant with selecting K588R + L592R mutations at Env-EL9. Finally, we evaluated the impact of Env-EL9 escape mutations on HIV-1 infectivity and Env protein structure. The K588R + L592R escape variant was directly related to HIV-1 increase replicative capacity and stability of Env at the LVC. Conclusions: These findings support the contribution of immunodominant Env-EL9 CD8 + T-cell responses and the imposition of immune escape variants with higher replicative capacity associated with LVC in this LNTP.     Phylodynamics of HIV-1 Circulating Recombinant Forms 12_BF and 38_BF in Argentina and Uruguay

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Although HIV-1 CRF12_BF and CRF38_BF are two epidemiologically important recombinant lineages circulating in Argentina and Uruguay, little is known about their population dynamics.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A total of 120 "CRF12_BF-like" and 20 "CRF38_BF-like" <it>pol </it>recombinant sequences collected in Argentina and Uruguay from 1997 to 2009 were subjected to phylogenetic and Bayesian coalescent-based analyses to estimate evolutionary and demographic parameters.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Phylogenetic analyses revealed that CRF12_BF viruses from Argentina and Uruguay constitute a single epidemic with multiple genetic exchanges among countries; whereas circulation of the CRF38_BF seems to be confined to Uruguay. The mean estimated substitution rate of CRF12_BF at <it>pol </it>gene (2.5 × 10-3 substitutions/site/year) was similar to that previously described for subtype B. According to our estimates, CRF12_BF and CRF38_BF originated at 1983 (1978-1988) and 1986 (1981-1990), respectively. After their emergence, the CRF12_BF and CRF38_BF epidemics seem to have experienced a period of rapid expansion with initial growth rates of around 1.2 year<sup>-1 </sup>and 0.9 year<sup>-1</sup>, respectively. Later, the rate of spread of these CRFs_BF seems to have slowed down since the mid-1990s.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our results suggest that CRF12_BF and CRF38_BF viruses were generated during the 1980s, shortly after the estimated introduction of subtype F1 in South America (~1975-1980). After an initial phase of fast exponential expansion, the rate of spread of both CRFs_BF epidemics seems to have slowed down, thereby following a demographic pattern that resembles those previously reported for the HIV-1 epidemics in Brazil, USA, and Western Europe.</p

    Esta investigación nos acercó más al tema de las formas precolombinas específicamente la de los motivos de la Cultura de los Pastos. Para nosotros fue importante rescatar el diseño precolombino, ya que miramos muy poco interés por parte de las nuevas generaciones por conocer de este tema y también por parte de los diseñadores regionales en preocuparse por trabajar con el diseño autóctono. El fin de este proyecto fue lograr una pieza editorial en la que se muestre la estructura formal que traen impresas las cerámicas de los Pastos; para lograrlo de una forma innovadora e interesante para las nuevas generaciones, se realizó un catálogo donde su fuerte fue la infografía, ya que consideramos es el medio más eficaz , dinámico y analítico para atraer la atención de nuestro público, en la infografía se mostró la pieza cerámica, se descompuso la gráfica y se hizo un estudio basado en su estructura formal guiándose por los siguientes aspectos: Formas precolombina(modos estéticos y clasificación iconográfica), sintaxis de la imagen(diseño básico, el espacio, constituyentes básico de la forma y factores armónicos), culminando con el diseño editorial

    Relationship between supramaximal flows and flow-limiting mechanisms

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between supramaximal flows (SF) and indices of airway mechanics. We studied 26 asymptomatic young subjects (13 smokers, mean+/-SD 15.9+/-6.6 pack-years). Subjects performed maximal expiratory now-volume (MEFV) curves, according to the American Thoracic Society (ATS) criteria, on a rolling-seal spirometer and then repeated them through a specially devised valve, which occluded the mouthpiece either 3 or 6 times . s(-1) with a ratio of open:closed time of 3:1, Envelope MEFV curves for 3 and 6 Hz occlusions were constructed passing through the SF obtained after each occlusion, and the increment in now at 50% of vital capacity was measured with respect to the basal curve (Delta V'max50). We found that the Delta V'max50 at 3 and 6 Hz correlated to the baseline forced mid-expiratory flow (FEF25-75) in % of predicted value (r=-0.73 and r=-0.55, respectively). Our results suggest that inhomogeneities within the lung are an important mechanism in the occurrence of supramaximal flow in normal subjects. (C)ERS Journals 1996

    Spatial patterns of dicot diversity in Argentina

    In this paper, we analyzed the taxonomic diversity of the Argentine dicots to evaluate their relationships with area, latitude, and longitude. We also evaluated species diversity and higher taxa diversity relationships. The families, genera and species diversity in Argentine dicots was not explained by the area of each province but it varied through latitudinal and longitudinal gradients. The taxonomic diversity of these plants increased from high to low latitudes and west-east longitudes. These patterns would explain why the main diversity centers are located in the North region of this country. As we expected the species diversity and higher taxa diversity showed a positive relationship. At this scale, higher taxa diversity could be use as surrogate for species diversity

    Effects of social and environmental contexts on multi-male mating and mixed paternity in socially monogamous female prairie voles

    With whom and how often to mate are fundamental questions that impact individual reproductive success and the mating system. Relatively few studies have investigated female mating tactics compared with males. Here, we asked how differential access to mates influences the occurrence of mixed paternity and overall reproductive success in socially monogamous female prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster). We created male- and female-biased sex ratios of prairie voles living in semi-natural outdoor enclosures. We ran paternity analyses to determine the identity and number of mating partners females had and the number of offspring produced. We found that 57.1% of females had litters fathered by two or more males when males outnumbered females, and 87.5% of females had litters with more than one father when females outnumbered males. However, the percentage of mixed paternity and the total number of embryos were not statistically different between social contexts. We determined that female fecundity (i.e. number of embryos) correlated with the number of male fathers in each litter across social contexts. Although our study did not support the hypothesis that social context directly influences female mating decisions, it did suggest that female multi-male mating might lead to increased fertilization success under semi-natural conditions
