    Suture associated corneal abscess three years after cataract surgery: a case report

    We describe a case of corneal abscess presenting three years after uneventful cataract extraction with posterior chamber lens implantation through a limbal incision secured with threesutures placed in the clear cornea. After removing the abscess, a loose10/0 nylon suture was found at the base of an ulcer. The suture was removed and a scraping taken from the base of the ulcer after which the patient was started on topical antibiotics and cycloplegics. Results of Gram stain microscopy were negative. After one month follow up, the ulcer had healed without perforation leaving a deep depression on the cornea. Risk factors and bacteriology of suture related corneal abscess are discussed and suture associated complications of cataract surgery are reviewed

    Subtarsal foreign bodies (FB) are a significant cause of ocular discomfort and are often missed on slit lamp examination of the everted upper eye lid. We report a patient with a needle-like subtarsal FB which was missed on repeated examinations over a three-month period. Staining with fluorescein and observation of scratch marks on epithelial surface of the cornea can give a clue to the presence of such a FB.     High-Temperature Friction and Wear Studies of Nimonic 80A and Nimonic 90 Against Nimonic 75 Under Dry Sliding Conditions

    The present research focuses on dry sliding friction and wear behaviour of Nimonic 80A and Nimonic 90 against Nimonic 75 at high temperature up to 1023 K. The influence of temperature, sliding distance and normal load on friction and wear behaviour of Nimonic 80A and Nimonic 90 against Nimonic 75 was studied using pin (Nimonic 75)-on-disc (Nimonic 80A and Nimonic 90). Lower wear and lower friction of superalloys was observed at high temperatures, as compared to room temperature. Surface morphological and surface analytical studies of fresh and worn surfaces were carried out using optical microscopy, 3D profilometer, scanning electron microscope, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy to understand the friction and wear behaviour. The mechanism of the formation of microscale glaze layer is also discussed

    Uterine inversion - an obstetrician’s nightmare: a series of 3 cases of uterine inversion and a review of management options

    Acute puerperal uterine inversion is an extremely rare but potentially life-threatening complication in which the uterine fundus collapses within the endometrial cavity and beyond. Although the causes of uterine inversion are unclear, several predisposing factors have been described. Maternal mortality is extremely high unless the condition is recognized and corrected. We present here a series of three cases of uterine inversion managed in our hospital over a period of 3 years. Our first case, Mrs XYZ referred to our hospital after vaginal delivery followed by postpartum collapse. The patient was in hypovolemic shock with 2nd degree uterine inversion. Second case, Mrs ABC referred to our hospital after vaginal delivery and mass coming out of the vagina. The patient had postpartum haemorrhage with 2nd degree uterine inversion. Our third case, Mrs DEF, c/o full term vaginal delivery at our hospital with 2nd degree uterine inversion with postpartum haemorrhage. In all three cases, the patients were explored in the OT under general anaesthesia and uterine reposition was done vaginally. Two of the patients required mechanical ventilation post operatively and all the patients required blood and blood product transfusion. The clinical management, treatment options and surgical nuances of management of uterine inversion are discussed

    Urological implications associated with the use of recreational drugs: A narrative review

    About 275 million people worldwide aged between 15 and 64 years used drugs at least once since 2016. Initial estimations suggest that 13.8 million young people between 15 and 16 years used cannabis every year. Recreational drug use contributes significantly to mortality as well as physical and mental health problems. A number of urological complications can arise from the use of common and emerging recreational drugs which can present as wide spectrum affecting lower and upper urinary tracts, kidneys, sexual organs as well as sexual dysfunction. In order to effectively manage these issues, urologists need to be cognizant of these complications in their patients, particularly among youths. This review attempted to consolidate available data and provide insight into this issue; however, further population-based epidemiological studies are needed to provide necessary guidelines

    Influence Of Tillage Practices And Residue Management Practices on Yield Attributes And Yield Of Maize In Maize-Based Cropping Systems Under Semi-Arid Tropics

    A field experiment was conducted during kharif and rabi in 2016-17 and 2017-18 at International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-arid Tropics, Patancheru, Hyderabad to study the influence of tillage practices and residue management practices on yield attributes and yield of maize in maize-based cropping systems under semi-arid tropics. The field experiment was laid out on broad-beds and furrows in a split-split design with four replications under rainfed conditions. Main plot consisted of two tillage practices (minimum tillage and conventional tillage), sub-plot of two crop residue management practices (residue addition and no-residue addition) and sub-sub plot of two cropping systems (Maize-chickpea sequential cropping and maize+pigeonpea intercropping system). The results revealed that yield and yield attributes of maize did not vary significantly due to tillage practices, however, minimum tillage led to considerable yield losses. Among the residue management practices, addition of crop residue recorded significantly higher yield and yield attributes (cob girth, number of grain rows and test weight) as compared to no residue addition. Yield attributes and yield remained non-significant among the two cropping systems

    Screening of maize germplasm for Turcicum leaf blight resistance

    : A study was conducted during Kharif 2012 and 2013 at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir, Shalimar Campus Srinagar with the objective of screening sixty maize genotypes against Turcicum leaf blight caused by Exserohilum turcicum (Pass.) Leonard and Suggs. Field experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with three replications. In order to ensure establishment of infection, artificial inoculation of E. turcicum on test genotypes was made twice at 30 and 40 days after sowing with two different methods of inoculation (spraying on foliage of maize with spore suspension of pathogen @ 5x104 spores/ml at 30 DAS and by whorl drop inoculation of pathogen multiplies on sorghum grains at 40 DAS). Disease severity on test entries was scored at silk drying stage and studies revealed that two inbred lines, viz., NAI-112 and NAI-147, and one hybrid, viz., HQPM-1 were found resistant with pooled disease intensity of 4.12 per cent, 4.04 per cent and 4.38 per cent, respectively. Four inbred lines, viz., KDM 381 A, KDM 918 A, NAI-152 and NAI-167 were found susceptible with pooled disease intensity of 52.82 per cent, 51.02 per cent, 58.58 per cent and 61.33 per cent, respectively. The remaining genotypes were moderately resistant to moderately susceptible
