Nimbus 6 Doppler processing using the Fairbanks calibration platform

    Get PDF
A weighted least squares processor is examined. Research conducted in support of the NASA satellite aided Search and Rescue program is presented. An estimated NIMBUS 6 ephemeris, accurate to 1.5-2.5 km and 0.5-2.5 m/s relative to a reference orbit, is obtained during the three day signal transmission period. This suggests updating the knowledge of the relay satellite ephemeris by one reference beacon is needed during the Search and Rescue demonstration

    Mode-locking in vertical external-cavity surface-emitting lasers with type-II quantum-well configurations

A microscopic study of mode-locked pulse generation is presented for vertical external-cavity surface-emitting lasers utilizing type-II quantum well configurations. The coupled Maxwell semiconductor Bloch equations are solved numerically where the type-II carrier replenishment is modeled via suitably chosen reservoirs. Conditions for stable mode-locked pulses are identified allowing for pulses in the \unit[100]{fs} range. Design strategies for type-II configurations are proposed that avoid potentially unstable pulse dynamics.Comment: Main paper with supplementary material

Toward transferable interatomic van der Waals interactions without electrons: The role of multipole electrostatics and many-body dispersion

    Get PDF
We estimate polarizabilities of atoms in molecules without electron density, using a Voronoi tesselation approach instead of conventional density partitioning schemes. The resulting atomic dispersion coefficients are calculated, as well as many-body dispersion effects on intermolecular potential energies. We also estimate contributions from multipole electrostatics and compare them to dispersion. We assess the performance of the resulting intermolecular interaction model from dispersion and electrostatics for more than 1,300 neutral and charged, small organic molecular dimers. Applications to water clusters, the benzene crystal, the anti-cancer drug ellipticine---intercalated between two Watson-Crick DNA base pairs, as well as six macro-molecular host-guest complexes highlight the potential of this method and help to identify points of future improvement. The mean absolute error made by the combination of static electrostatics with many-body dispersion reduces at larger distances, while it plateaus for two-body dispersion, in conflict with the common assumption that the simple 1/R61/R^6 correction will yield proper dissociative tails. Overall, the method achieves an accuracy well within conventional molecular force fields while exhibiting a simple parametrization protocol.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figure

Regression-adjusted small area estimates of functional dependency in the noninstitutionalized American population age 65 and over.

Health planning efforts for the population age 65 and over have been hampered continually by the lack of reliable estimates of the noninstitutionalized long-term care population. Until recently national estimates were virtually nonexistent, and reliable small area estimates remain unavailable. However, with the recent publication of several national surveys and the 1990 Census, synthetic estimates can be made for states and counties by using multivariate methods to model functional dependency at the national level, and then applying the predicted probabilities to corresponding state and county data. Using the 1984 National Health Interview Survey's Supplement on Aging and the 1986 Area Health Resources File System, we have produced log-linear regression models that include demographic and contextual variables as predictors of functional dependency among the noninstitutionalized population age 65 and over. Age, sex, race, and the percent of the 65 and over population who reside in poverty were found to be significant predictors of functional dependency. Applying these models to 1986 Medicare Enrollment Statistics, regression-adjusted synthetic estimates of two levels of functional dependency were produced for all states and - as examples of how the rates can be used to produce additional synthetic estimates - the largest county in each state. We also produced point estimates and standard errors for the national prevalence of functional dependency among the noninstitutionalized population age 65 and over

Test results of Spacelab 2 infrared telescope focal plane

    Get PDF
The small helium cooled infrared telescope for Spacelab 2 is designed for sensitive mapping of extended, low-surface-brightness celestial sources as well as highly sensitive investigations of the shuttle contamination environment (FPA) for this mission is described as well as the design for a thermally isolated, self-heated J-FET transimpedance amplifier. This amplifier is Johnson noise limited for feedback resistances from less than 10 to the 8th power Omega to greater than 2 x 10 to the 10th power Omega at T = 4.2K. Work on the focal plane array is complete. Performance testing for qualification of the flight hardware is discussed, and results are presented. All infrared data channels are measured to be background limited by the expected level of zodiacal emission

Pilot Experiments with Electrodialysis and Ozonation for the Production of a Fertilizer from Urine

Pilot tests were performed with a process combination of electrodialysis and ozonation for the removal of micropollutants and the concentration of nutrients in urine. In continuous and batch experiments, maximum concentration factors up to 3.5 and 4.1 were obtained, respectively. The desalination capacity did not decrease significantly during continuous operation periods of several weeks. Membrane cleaning after 195 days resulted in approximately 35% increase in desalination rate. The Yeast Estrogen Screen (YES), a bioassay that selectively detects oestrogenic compounds, confirmed that about 90% of the oestrogenic activity was removed by electrodialysis. HPLC analysis showed that ibuprofen was removed to a high extent, while other micropollutants were below the detection limit. In view of the fact that ibuprofen is among the most rapidly transported micropollutants in electrodialysis processes, this result indicates that electrodialysis provides an effective barrier for micropollutants. Standardised plant growth tests were performed in the field with the salt solution resulting from the treatment by electrodialysis and subsequent ozonation. The results show that the plant height is comparable to synthetic fertilisers, but the crop yield is slightly lower. The latter is probably caused by volatilisation losses during field application, which can be prevented by improved application technologies
