Nonperturbative QED Effective Action at Finite Temperature
We advance a novel method for the finite-temperature effective action for
nonequilibrium quantum fields and find the QED effective action in
time-dependent electric fields, where charged pairs evolve out of equilibrium.
The imaginary part of the effective action consists of thermal loops of the
Fermi-Dirac or Bose-Einstein distribution for the initial thermal ensemble
weighted with factors for vacuum fluctuations. And the real part of the
effective action is determined by the mean number of produced pairs, vacuum
polarization, and thermal distribution. The mean number of produced pairs is
equal to twice the imaginary part. We explicitly find the finite-temperature

Effective Action of QED in Electric Field Backgrounds II: Spatially Localized Fields
We find the Bogoliubov coefficient from the tunneling boundary condition on a
charged particle coupled to a static electric field and,
using the regularization scheme in Phys. Rev. D 78, 105013 (2008), obtain the
exact one-loop effective action in scalar and spinor QED. It is shown that the
effective action satisfies the general relation between the vacuum persistence
and the mean number of produced pairs. We advance an approximation method for
general electric fields and show the duality between the space-dependent and
time-dependent electric fields of the same form at the leading order of the

Probing the Intermediate-Age Globular Clusters in NGC 5128 from Ultraviolet Observations
We explore the age distribution of the globular cluster (GC) system of the
nearby elliptical galaxy NGC 5128 using ultraviolet (UV) photometry from Galaxy
Evolution Explorer (GALEX) observations, with UV - optical colors used as the
age indicator. Most GCs in NGC 5128 follow the general trends of GCs in M31 and
Milky Way in UV - optical color-color diagram, which indicates that the
majority of GCs in NGC 5128 are old similar to the age range of old GCs in M31
and Milky Way. A large fraction of spectroscopically identified
intermediate-age GC (IAGC) candidates with ~ 3-8 Gyr are not detected in the
FUV passband. Considering the nature of intermediate-age populations being
faint in the far-UV (FUV) passband, we suggest that many of the
spectroscopically identified IAGCs may be truly intermediate in age. This is in
contrast to the case of M31 where a large fraction of spectroscopically
suggested IAGCs are detected in FUV and therefore may not be genuine IAGCs but
rather older GCs with developed blue horizontal branch stars. Our UV photometry
strengthens the results previously suggesting the presence of GC and stellar
subpopulation with intermediate age in NGC 5128. The existence of IAGCs
strongly indicates the occurrence of at least one more major star formation

Temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy in BaRuO systems
We investigated the temperature-dependence of the Raman spectra of a
nine-layer BaRuO single crystal and a four-layer BaRuO epitaxial film,
which show pseudogap formations in their metallic states. From the polarized
and depolarized spectra, the observed phonon modes are assigned properly
according to the predictions of group theory analysis. In both compounds, with
decreasing temperature, while modes show a strong hardening, (or
) modes experience a softening or no significant shift. Their different
temperature-dependent behaviors could be related to a direct Ru metal-bonding
through the face-sharing of RuO. It is also observed that another
mode of the oxygen participating in the face-sharing becomes split at low
temperatures in the four layer BaRuO. And, the temperature-dependence of
the Raman continua between 250 600 cm is strongly correlated to
the square of the plasma frequency. Our observations imply that there should be
a structural instability in the face-shared structure, which could be closely
related to the pseudogap formation of BaRuO systems.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures. to be published in Phys. Rev.
Fractal Properties of Robust Strange Nonchaotic Attractors in Maps of Two or More Dimensions
We consider the existence of robust strange nonchaotic attractors (SNA's) in
a simple class of quasiperiodically forced systems. Rigorous results are
presented demonstrating that the resulting attractors are strange in the sense
that their box-counting dimension is N+1 while their information dimension is

Statistical-Mechanical Measure of Stochastic Spiking Coherence in A Population of Inhibitory Subthreshold Neurons
By varying the noise intensity, we study stochastic spiking coherence (i.e.,
collective coherence between noise-induced neural spikings) in an inhibitory
population of subthreshold neurons (which cannot fire spontaneously without
noise). This stochastic spiking coherence may be well visualized in the raster
plot of neural spikes. For a coherent case, partially-occupied "stripes"
(composed of spikes and indicating collective coherence) are formed in the
raster plot. This partial occupation occurs due to "stochastic spike skipping"
which is well shown in the multi-peaked interspike interval histogram. The main
purpose of our work is to quantitatively measure the degree of stochastic
spiking coherence seen in the raster plot. We introduce a new spike-based
coherence measure by considering the occupation pattern and the pacing
pattern of spikes in the stripes. In particular, the pacing degree between
spikes is determined in a statistical-mechanical way by quantifying the average
contribution of (microscopic) individual spikes to the (macroscopic)
ensemble-averaged global potential. This "statistical-mechanical" measure
is in contrast to the conventional measures such as the "thermodynamic" order
parameter (which concerns the time-averaged fluctuations of the macroscopic
global potential), the "microscopic" correlation-based measure (based on the
cross-correlation between the microscopic individual potentials), and the
measures of precise spike timing (based on the peri-stimulus time histogram).
In terms of , we quantitatively characterize the stochastic spiking
coherence, and find that reflects the degree of collective spiking
coherence seen in the raster plot very well. Hence, the
"statistical-mechanical" spike-based measure may be used usefully to
quantify the degree of stochastic spiking coherence in a statistical-mechanical

Effective Action of QED in Electric Field Backgrounds
We use the evolution operator method to find the one-loop effective action of
scalar and spinor QED in electric field backgrounds in terms of the Bogoliubov
coefficient between the ingoing and the outgoing vacua. We obtain the exact
one-loop effective action for a Sauter-type electric field, E_0 sech^2 (t/tau),
and show that the imaginary part correctly yields the vacuum persistence. The
renormalized effective action shows the general relation between the vacuum
persistence and the total mean number of created pairs for the constant and the

Identification of a Blood-Based Protein Biomarker Panel for Lung Cancer Detection
Lung cancer is the deadliest cancer worldwide, mainly due to its advanced stage at the time of diagnosis. A non-invasive method for its early detection remains mandatory to improve patients’ survival. Plasma levels of 351 proteins were quantified by Liquid Chromatography-Parallel Reaction Monitoring (LC-PRM)-based mass spectrometry in 128 lung cancer patients and 93 healthy donors. Bootstrap sampling and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) penalization were used to find the best protein combination for outcome prediction. The PanelomiX platform was used to select the optimal biomarker thresholds. The panel was validated in 48 patients and 49 healthy volunteers. A 6-protein panel clearly distinguished lung cancer from healthy individuals. The panel displayed excellent performance: area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) = 0.999, positive predictive value (PPV) = 0.992, negative predictive value (NPV) = 0.989, specificity = 0.989 and sensitivity = 0.992. The panel detected lung cancer independently of the disease stage. The 6-protein panel and other sub-combinations displayed excellent results in the validation dataset. In conclusion, we identified a blood-based 6-protein panel as a diagnostic tool in lung cancer. Used as a routine test for high- and average-risk individuals, it may complement currently adopted techniques in lung cancer screening.publishedVersio
En bloc Extended Total Thymectomy and Extrapleural Pneumonectomy in Masaoka stage IVA Thymomas
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Surgical excision is the primary treatment for a thymoma. However, for advanced thymoma that extends to within the thoracic cavity and for recurrent cases with pleural dissemination (Masaoka stage IVA), the appropriate treatment is controversial. We evaluated the safety of surgery and outcomes of seven patients that underwent an en bloc extended total thymectomy and extrapleural pneumonectomy for stage IVA thymomas.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>From 1994 to 2009, five patients initially diagnosed with pleural dissemination and two patients with recurrent tumors in the pleura and lungs after a total thymectomy, were identified. Seven patients had an extrapleural pneumonectomy performed. For the first operation, five patients underwent additional en bloc extended total thymectomy.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Two recurrent cases were identified 55.2 and 12.3 months after first operation. Two patients had WHO type B1-B2 tumors, two had B2, two had B2-B3, and one had a B3 tumor. The mean hospital stay was 15.3 days (range: 7-29). There was no operative mortality. Four patients had neoadjuvant chemotherapy and five were treated with adjuvant chemotherapy. The median survival was 30.6 months and the Kaplan-Meier 2-year survival was 100% (95% confidence interval: 24.6-36.6 months). One patient, who did not receive induction chemotherapy, had distant metastases after surgery.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>En bloc extended total thymectomy and extrapleural pneumonectomy can be safely performed on selected patients with stage IVA thymomas and is expected to achieve complete local control. Although the treatment strategy has yet to be standardized, complete resection with appropriate systemic therapy may improve survival in otherwise fatal disease.</p
Intramembrane proteolysis of an extracellular serine protease, epithin/PRSS14, enables its intracellular nuclear function
Background
Epithin/PRSS14, a type II transmembrane serine protease, is an emerging target of cancer therapy because of its critical roles in tumor progression and metastasis. In many circumstances, the protease, through its ectodomain shedding, exists as a soluble form and performs its proteolytic functions in extracellular environments increasing cellular invasiveness. The seemingly functional integrity of the soluble form raises the question of why the protease is initially made as a membrane-associated protein.
Results
In this report, we show that the epithin/PRSS14 intracellular domain (EICD) can be released from the membrane by the action of signal peptide peptidase-like 2b (SPPL2b) after ectodomain shedding. The EICD preferentially localizes in the nucleus and can enhance migration, invasion, and metastasis of epithelial cancer when heterologously expressed. Unbiased RNA-seq analysis and subsequent antibody arrays showed that EICD could control the gene expression of chemokines involved in cell motility, by increasing their promoter activities. Finally, bioinformatics analysis provided evidence for the clinical significance of the intramembrane proteolysis of epithin/PRSS14 by revealing that the poor survival of estrogen receptor (ER)-negative breast cancer patients with high epithin/PRSS14 expression is further worsened by high levels of SPPL2b.
Conclusions
These results show that ectodomain shedding of epithin/PRSS14 can initiate a unique and synchronized bidirectional signal for cancer metastasis: extracellularly broadening proteolytic modification of the surrounding environment and intracellularly reprogramming the transcriptome for metastatic conversion.
