    New Developments in Biotechnology and IPR in Aquaculture – Are They Sustainable?

    The objective of this chapter is to give an overview and analysis of the current trends and developments in biotechnology in aquaculture research and management. The technological developments along with structural changes in the aquaculture sector may affect access and intellectual property rights (IPR) regimes. These issues will be discussed in a wide perspective involving both short and long-term biological effects, ethical and other social aspects (economic, legal and political issues), including their partly inherent contradictions needing compromising for sustainable development. The chapter will focus on current biological challenges within aquaculture as a growing food production sector, with less emphasis on external effects such as environmental effects. Cases from farmed salmon and cod in Norway in addition to shrimp and tilapia in Asia will be highlighted

    Implementing the Minamata Convention on Mercury: Will China Deliver?

    China has undertaken a major shift in its position on mercury as an environmental problem over the last decade and a half. It ratified the Minamata Convention (MC) in 2016 and by doing so has committed to implement the treaty objectives. This article asks: How do we explain China’s will and ability to implement its MC obligations? There is little systematic knowledge about the main factors underlying implementation of international mercury objectives in China, hence this article contributes new research on this important topic. We examine the implementation process, focusing on the coal sector and differentiate between indirect effects from other policies and direct efforts to implement obligations. We find that China has moved toward stricter regulation of mercury emissions and direct implementation of the Minamata Convention in the coal sector.     THE POTENTIAL EFFECT OF MINI-TRAMPOLINE STIFFNESS ON TAKE-OFF BEHAVIOUR OF GYMNASTS – A METHODOLOGICAL STUDY

    The purpose of this study was to compare two mini-trampolines with different spring constant in regard to their effect on take-off mechanics. It was expected that the softer (36 springs) trampoline would lead to a longer contact time and a higher take-off impulse. To assess reaction forces during jumps a flexible force insole was used simultaneously with the measurement of run-in velocity by timing gates. Results showed no significant differences in contact mechanics or contact time indicating that the difference between these two trampolines is only marginal. Therefore, this study provides mainly a novel measurement approach to assess the effect of equipment changes in trampolining. Future studies are warranted to assess the athlete-equipment interaction in greater detail

    Generic representations of abelian groups and extreme amenability

    If GG is a Polish group and Γ\Gamma is a countable group, denote by \Hom(\Gamma, G) the space of all homomorphisms Γ→G\Gamma \to G. We study properties of the group \cl{\pi(\Gamma)} for the generic \pi \in \Hom(\Gamma, G), when Γ\Gamma is abelian and GG is one of the following three groups: the unitary group of an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space, the automorphism group of a standard probability space, and the isometry group of the Urysohn metric space. Under mild assumptions on Γ\Gamma, we prove that in the first case, there is (up to isomorphism of topological groups) a unique generic \cl{\pi(\Gamma)}; in the other two, we show that the generic \cl{\pi(\Gamma)} is extremely amenable. We also show that if Γ\Gamma is torsion-free, the centralizer of the generic π\pi is as small as possible, extending a result of King from ergodic theory.Comment: Version
