Does Automated Unit Test Generation Really Help Software Testers? A Controlled Empirical Study
Work on automated test generation has produced several tools capable of generating test data which achieves high structural coverage over a program. In the absence of a specification, developers are expected to manually construct or verify the test oracle for each test input. Nevertheless, it is assumed that these generated tests ease the task of testing for the developer, as testing is reduced to checking the results of tests. While this assumption has persisted for decades, there has been no conclusive evidence to date confirming it. However, the limited adoption in industry indicates this assumption may not be correct, and calls into question the practical value of test generation tools. To investigate this issue, we performed two controlled experiments comparing a total of 97 subjects split between writing tests manually and writing tests with the aid of an automated unit test generation tool, EvoSuite. We found that, on one hand, tool support leads to clear improvements in commonly applied quality metrics such as code coverage (up to 300% increase). However, on the other hand, there was no measurable improvement in the number of bugs actually found by developers. Our results not only cast some doubt on how the research community evaluates test generation tools, but also point to improvements and future work necessary before automated test generation tools will be widely adopted by practitioners
Phosphocholine an agonist of metabotropic but not of ionotropic functions of alpha9-containing nicotinic acetylcholine receptors
We demonstrated previously that phosphocholine and phosphocholine-modified macromolecules efficiently inhibit ATP-dependent release of interleukin-1beta from human and murine monocytes by a mechanism involving nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR). Interleukin-1beta is a potent pro-inflammatory cytokine of innate immunity that plays pivotal roles in host defence. Control of interleukin-1beta release is vital as excessively high systemic levels cause life threatening inflammatory diseases. In spite of its structural similarity to acetylcholine, there are no other reports on interactions of phosphocholine with nAChR. In this study, we demonstrate that phosphocholine inhibits ion-channel function of ATP receptor P2X7 in monocytic cells via nAChR containing alpha9 and alpha10 subunits. In stark contrast to choline, phosphocholine does not evoke ion current responses in Xenopus laevis oocytes, which heterologously express functional homomeric nAChR composed of alpha9 subunits or heteromeric receptors containing alpha9 and alpha10 subunits. Preincubation of these oocytes with phosphocholine, however, attenuated choline-induced ion current changes, suggesting that phosphocholine may act as a silent agonist. We conclude that phophocholine activates immuno-modulatory nAChR expressed by monocytes but does not stimulate canonical ionotropic receptor functions

Reluplex: An Efficient SMT Solver for Verifying Deep Neural Networks
Deep neural networks have emerged as a widely used and effective means for
tackling complex, real-world problems. However, a major obstacle in applying
them to safety-critical systems is the great difficulty in providing formal
guarantees about their behavior. We present a novel, scalable, and efficient
technique for verifying properties of deep neural networks (or providing
counter-examples). The technique is based on the simplex method, extended to
handle the non-convex Rectified Linear Unit (ReLU) activation function, which
is a crucial ingredient in many modern neural networks. The verification
procedure tackles neural networks as a whole, without making any simplifying
assumptions. We evaluated our technique on a prototype deep neural network
implementation of the next-generation airborne collision avoidance system for
unmanned aircraft (ACAS Xu). Results show that our technique can successfully
prove properties of networks that are an order of magnitude larger than the
largest networks verified using existing methods.Comment: This is the extended version of a paper with the same title that

Seasonal variability of the subpolar gyres in the Southern Ocean: a numerical investigation based on transfer operators
The detection of regions in the ocean that are coherent over an extended period of time is a fundamental problem in many oceanic applications. For instance such regions are important for studying the transport of marine species and for the distribution of nutrients. In this study we demonstrate the efficacy of transfer operators in detecting and analysing such structures. We focus first on the detection of the Weddell and Ross Gyre for the four seasons spanning December 2003–November 2004 within the 3-D oceanic domain south of 30° S, and show distinct seasonal differences in both the three-dimensional structure and the persistence of the gyres. Further, we demonstrate a new technique based on the discretised transfer operators to calculate the mean residence time of water within parts of the gyres and determine pathways of water leaving and entering the gyres
Specific fibroblast subpopulations and neuronal structures provide local sources of Vegfc-processing components during zebrafish lymphangiogenesis
Proteolytical processing of the growth factor VEGFC through the concerted activity of CCBE1 and ADAMTS3 is required for lymphatic development to occur. How these factors act together in time and space, and which cell types produce these factors is not understood. Here we assess the function of Adamts3 and the related protease Adamts14 during zebrafish lymphangiogenesis and show both proteins to be able to process Vegfc. Only the simultaneous loss of both protein functions results in lymphatic defects identical to vegfc loss-of-function situations. Cell transplantation experiments demonstrate neuronal structures and/or fibroblasts to constitute cellular sources not only for both proteases but also for Ccbe1 and Vegfc. We further show that this locally restricted Vegfc maturation is needed to trigger normal lymphatic sprouting and directional migration. Our data provide a single-cell resolution model for establishing secretion and processing hubs for Vegfc during developmental lymphangiogenesis
Unbiased Global Optimization of Lennard-Jones Clusters for N <= 201 by Conformational Space Annealing Method
We apply the conformational space annealing (CSA) method to the Lennard-Jones
clusters and find all known lowest energy configurations up to 201 atoms,
without using extra information of the problem such as the structures of the
known global energy minima. In addition, the robustness of the algorithm with
respect to the randomness of initial conditions of the problem is demonstrated
by ten successful independent runs up to 183 atoms. Our results indicate that
the CSA method is a general and yet efficient global optimization algorithm
applicable to many systems.Comment: revtex, 4 pages, 2 figures. Physical Review Letters, in pres
