Scaling Approach to the Phase Diagram of Quantum Hall Systems
We present a simple classification of the different liquid and solid phases
of quantum Hall systems in the limit where the Coulomb interaction between the
electrons is significant, i.e. away from integral filling factors. This
classification, and a criterion for the validity of the mean-field
approximation in the charge-density-wave phase, is based on scaling arguments
concerning the effective interaction potential of electrons restricted to an
arbitrary Landau level. Finite-temperature effects are investigated within the
same formalism, and a good agreement with recent experiments is obtained.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures; to be published in Europhys. Lett.; new version

Atmospheric constraint statistics for the Space Shuttle mission planning
The procedures used to establish statistics of atmospheric constraints of interest to the Space Shuttle mission planning are presented. The statistics considered are for the frequency of occurrence, runs, and time conditional probabilities of several atmospheric constrants for each of the Space Shuttle mission phases. The mission phases considered are (1) prelaunch, (2) launch, (3) return to launch site, (4) abort once around landing, and (5) end of mission landing
An experimental investigation of leading-edge vortex augmentation by blowing
A wind tunnel test was conducted to determine the effects of over-the-wing blowing as a means of augmenting the leading-edge vortex flow of several pointed-tip, sharp-edged planforms. Arrow, delta, and diamond wings with leading-edge sweeps of 30 and 45 degrees were mounted on a body-of-revolution fuselage and tested in a low-speed wind tunnel at a Mach number of 0.2. Nozzle location data, pitch data, and flow-visualization pictures were obtained for a range of blowing rates. Results show pronounced increases in vortex lift due to the blowing

Four-D global reference atmosphere technical description, part 1
An empirical atmospheric model was developed which generates values for pressure, density, temperature, and winds from surface levels to orbital altitudes. The output parameters consist of components for: (1) latitude, longitude, and altitude dependent monthly and annual means; (2) quasi-biennial oscillations; and (3) random perturbations to simulate partially the variability due to synoptic, diurnal, planetary wave, and gravity wave variations. Quasi-biennial and random variation perturbations are computed from parameters determined from various empirical studies and are added to the monthly mean values. This model has been developed as a computer program called PROFILE which can be used to generate altitude profiles of atmospheric parameters along any simulated trajectory through the atmosphere. The PROFILE program was developed for design applications in the space shuttle program. Other applications of the model are discussed, such as for global circulation and diffusion studies, and for generating profiles for comparison with other atmospheric measurement techniques, (e.g. satellite measured temperature profiles)
Local density of states of electron-crystal phases in graphene in the quantum Hall regime
We calculate, within a self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation, the local
density of states for different electron crystals in graphene subject to a
strong magnetic field. We investigate both the Wigner crystal and bubble
crystals with M_e electrons per lattice site. The total density of states
consists of several pronounced peaks, the number of which in the negative
energy range coincides with the number of electrons M_e per lattice site, as
for the case of electron-solid phases in the conventional two-dimensional
electron gas. Analyzing the local density of states at the peak energies, we
find particular scaling properties of the density patterns if one fixes the
ratio nu_N/M_e between the filling factor nu_N of the last partially filled
Landau level and the number of electrons per bubble. Although the total density
profile depends explicitly on M_e, the local density of states of the lowest
peaks turns out to be identical regardless the number of electrons M_e. Whereas
these electron-solid phases are reminiscent to those expected in the
conventional two-dimensional electron gas in GaAs heterostructures in the
quantum Hall regime, the local density of states and the scaling relations we
highlight in this paper may be, in graphene, directly measured by spectroscopic
means, such as e.g. scanning tunneling microscopy.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures; minor correction
Surface temperatures and temperature gradient features of the US Gulf Coast waters
Satellite thermal infrared data on the Gulf of Mexico show that a seasonal cycle exists in the horizontal surface temperature structure. In the fall, the surface temperatures of both coastal and deep waters are nearly uniform. With the onset of winter, atmospheric cold fronts, which are accompanied by dry, low temperature air and strong winds, draw heat from the sea. A band of cooler water forming on the inner shelf expands, until a thermal front develops seaward along the shelf break between the cold shelf waters and the warmer deep waters of the Gulf. Digital analysis of the satellite data was carried out in an interactive mode using a minicomputer and software. A time series of temperature profiles illustrates the temporal and spatial changes in the sea-surface temperature field
Systematic limits on sin^2{2theta_{13}} in neutrino oscillation experiments with multi-reactors
Sensitivities to sin^2{2theta_{13}} without statistical errors (``systematic
limit'') are investigated in neutrino oscillation experiments with multiple
reactors. Using an analytical approach, we show that the systematic limit on
sin^2{2theta_{13}} is dominated by the uncorrelated systematic error sigma_u of
the detector. Even in an experiment with multi-detectors and multi-reactors, it
turns out that most of the systematic errors including the one due to the
nature of multiple sources is canceled as in the case with a single reactor
plus two detectors, if the near detectors are placed suitably. The case of the
KASKA plan (7 reactors and 3 detectors) is investigated in detail, and it is
explicitly shown that it does not suffer from the extra uncertainty due to
multiple reactors.Comment: 26 pages, 10 eps-files, revtex
